S-01 uses open, high, low, close, and volume (OHLCV) data from closed candlesticks to estimate positive and negative volume-price pressure.
It displays the volume distribution oscillator (VDO), fast and slow signals, a volume-price momentum histogram, an adaptive midline, and multiple distribution bands.
S-01 is designed to help traders assess whether price movements are supported by volume and whether volume-price pressure has moved into a relatively extended area.
What can I use S-01 for?
S-01 can help you:
-
Assess whether recent volume-price pressure is bullish, bearish, or relatively balanced.
-
Track whether VDO is rising or falling and whether the fast and slow signals point in the same direction.
-
Use the distribution bands to identify relative expansion and more extreme readings.
-
Combine volume-price information with a main-chart structure indicator to assess whether a breakout or retest is supported by volume.
How to read the lower panel
1. Volume-price histogram
The histogram shows the current balance of estimated volume-price pressure.
Green indicates more bullish pressure, while red indicates more bearish pressure. A neutral area means neither side currently has a clear advantage.
2. VDO
The volume distribution oscillator (VDO) is shown in cyan or purple depending on whether it is currently rising or falling.
The colors describe the direction of change in VDO. They should not be interpreted as meaning that cyan always predicts a price increase or purple always predicts a decline.
3. Fast signal and slow signal
The Fast signal and slow signal help you compare shorter- and longer-term changes in volume-price pressure.
When both are moving in the same direction, they provide additional context for the current VDO reading.
4. Adaptive midline
The adaptive midline is a dynamic reference line used to compare the current pressure reading with its recent distribution.
5. Distribution bands
The upper and lower distribution bands are based on the historical dispersion of volume-price pressure. They show how far the current reading has expanded relative to its historical range. Reaching an outer band does not by itself mean that price is about to reverse.
S-01 does not use a floating information panel. Its main information is displayed directly in the lower panel and its legend.
Suggested reading sequence
1. Start with the histogram. Check whether it is above or below the zero line.
2. Check VDO direction. See whether VDO is rising, falling, or repeatedly moving around the midline.
3. Compare the signals. Check whether the fast signal and slow signal support the same direction.
4. Review the distribution bands. Look for readings near the outer bands, but do not treat contact with a band as an automatic reversal signal.
5. Return to the main chart. Confirm market structure, price location, and risk before making a trading decision.
Settings overview
S-01 currently provides a colored histogram setting, which controls whether the histogram uses bullish and bearish colors for emphasis.
The indicator periods and distribution parameters use fixed settings and are not user-adjustable.
Confirmation and replay
S-01 uses closed-candlestick data and requires approximately 69 valid historical candles to complete its initial warm-up.
During chart replay, the VDO, signals, histogram, adaptive midline, and distribution bands use only the volume-price data that would have been available up to the current historical point. Future candles to the right of the replay position are not used.
S-01 limitations and risks
1. Volume-price pressure is estimated
S-01 derives its volume-price pressure from closed OHLCV data. It does not use actual tick-by-tick trade direction, the full order book, or footprint data, and should not be interpreted as true market order flow.
2. Missing volume is not zero volume
Missing volume data and valid zero-volume data are treated differently.
If the required volume data is unavailable, volume-price pressure calculations may also be unavailable. Missing data should not be interpreted as zero buying or selling pressure.
3. Distribution bands are not price targets
The distribution bands show the relative dispersion of the indicator's historical volume-price pressure readings. They do not represent probabilities of a price increase or decrease and should not be treated as price support or resistance levels.
4. Extreme readings can persist
A reading can remain near or beyond an outer distribution band for an extended period. Do not assume that an extreme reading means an immediate reversal or use contact with a band as the sole reason to trade against the current direction.
5. S-01 and M-01 use related volume-price concepts
Some of the volume-price information in S-01 is related to concepts also used by M-01. Because the two indicators may draw on related underlying data, their agreement should not automatically be treated as fully independent confirmation.
FAQs
1. Does cyan always mean bullish and purple always mean bearish?
No. The colors mainly indicate whether VDO is currently rising or falling and which segment of the oscillator is being displayed.
Use the color together with the zero line, fast signal, slow signal, and structure on the main chart rather than treating it as a standalone directional signal.
2. Why is the lower panel empty when I first add S-01?
S-01 needs enough valid historical candlesticks and volume data to complete its warm-up. It typically requires approximately 69 valid historical candles before all calculations are available.
3. Does reaching the outermost distribution band mean price will reverse immediately?
No. Extreme volume-price pressure can continue to expand or remain elevated. The distribution bands should not be used on their own as a basis for predicting a reversal.
