Mirae Asset plans $109 billion digital asset business

2026-08-27 08:30

Mirae Asset Financial Group is targeting a 150 trillion won ($109 billion) digital asset business built around its newly renamed subsidiary Digital X, placing one of South Korea’s largest financial groups behind an expansive plan covering cryptocurrency, stablecoins, tokenized real-world assets and security token offerings.

The target was outlined by founder and chairman Park Hyeon-joo during an employee event in Seoul, The Korea Times reported. Park presented the strategy under the theme “A new voyage begins, together,” setting a profitability goal for the digital asset operation in 2027.

Digital X will serve as the group’s main operating vehicle after Mirae Asset Consulting acquired a 97% stake in South Korean crypto exchange Korbit in July and renamed the company. The acquisition gives Mirae Asset an existing licensed exchange platform rather than requiring it to build a consumer-facing crypto business from scratch.

The scale of the proposed 150 trillion won business is far beyond the exchange operation that Digital X inherited. Mirae Asset’s plan would connect digital-asset services with the group’s traditional financial network, which Park said manages 1,500 trillion won in client assets, according to The Korea Times.

Four business lines under Digital X

Digital X is expected to focus on four categories: crypto assets, stablecoins, real-world assets and security token offerings, or STOs. The framework places trading and blockchain-based financial products alongside tokenization projects involving conventional assets.

The roadmap includes plans to tokenize gold, silver and electricity. Tokenization creates blockchain-based representations of assets or contractual rights, potentially allowing them to be traded, settled or used in financial products through digital systems. The proposal’s inclusion of electricity suggests Mirae Asset is considering tokenization beyond conventional securities and commodities, although the report did not detail how such products would be structured or regulated.

The group also plans to develop financial products and services using digital assets, while pursuing proprietary investment activities related to the sector. Its stated ambition is an “onchain finance” ecosystem, referring to financial activity that is recorded and executed through blockchain networks.

That approach would give Digital X a wider role than operating a crypto marketplace. It would combine a trading venue with product development, tokenized-asset issuance and blockchain-linked financial infrastructure, extending Mirae Asset’s digital-asset strategy into areas traditionally handled by securities firms, asset managers and payment providers.

Capital plan points toward a 2027 buildout

Mirae Asset is considering additional capital of up to 300 billion won ($218 million) for the project, The Korea Times reported. The group may pursue a third-party allotment of between 200 billion won and 300 billion won in the first quarter of 2027, contingent on improving earnings.

The financing timetable aligns with Park’s profitability target. Rather than presenting Digital X as a near-term earnings contributor, the group appears to be allowing several years for spending on platforms, products and operational capacity before expecting the unit to become profitable.

Mirae Asset Consulting also made a 50 billion won cash injection into the exchange operator on August 13, according to the report. That funding followed the Korbit acquisition and indicates that the parent group is supporting the platform’s initial transition into Digital X.

Digital X has also eliminated trading fees for one year, The Korea Times reported. The measure could help the platform attract activity in a domestic market dominated by much larger competitors, though a fee waiver alone is unlikely to determine whether it can build sustainable trading volume or retain users once normal pricing resumes.

South Korean government watchdogs had estimated Korbit’s market share at 0.5% last year, according to the report. That small starting position explains why Mirae Asset’s plan is centered on a broader financial platform rather than solely seeking to compete for spot-crypto trading volumes.

A traditional finance group tests a different route

Mirae Asset’s strategy reflects a bid to use its existing client base and financial-product expertise to create services that native crypto exchanges may find harder to replicate. Tokenized commodity products, stablecoin-linked payment or settlement services, and regulated security-token offerings would draw on capabilities closer to asset management and securities distribution than retail token trading.

The plan also arrives as South Korea’s regulatory framework for digital assets continues to develop. Security tokens and tokenized real-world assets can involve securities, payments and commodity-market rules, making product design and compliance as important as blockchain infrastructure. Digital X’s ability to turn the roadmap into revenue will depend partly on how those frameworks evolve and which activities regulators permit financial groups to conduct directly.

Park cautioned retail crypto buyers against excessive borrowing and said token allocations should remain below 10% of total assets, according to The Korea Times. The warning sits alongside Mirae Asset’s expansion plans: the group is seeking exposure to digital-asset infrastructure and financial products while publicly emphasizing risk controls for individuals trading volatile tokens.

Digital X now has a defined role in that effort. Mirae Asset is using the former Korbit operator as the center of a multi-year attempt to link conventional wealth management with blockchain-based assets, while its 2027 profitability goal will provide the first concrete test of whether that strategy can move beyond a costly market-entry plan.
