Coinbase restores Coinbase Wallet for multichain trading

2026-09-10 18:27

Coinbase has renamed its self-custody Base App back to Coinbase Wallet, abandoning a year-old identity built around social features and repositioning the product as a multichain gateway for onchain trading. The app now supports more than 10 networks and offers perpetual futures, prediction markets and tokenized stocks, though some services remain unavailable in certain jurisdictions.

Ryan Kass, head of product for Coinbase Wallet, said the app is intended to give users access to products and assets that may not appear in Coinbase’s main custodial platform. Perpetual futures powered by Hyperliquid are among the first examples, alongside long-tail crypto assets and support for additional blockchains as they become available.

The return to the Coinbase Wallet name follows a strategic retreat from the “everything app” concept introduced in July 2025. Coinbase had presented the Base App as a combined product for social networking, messaging, payments, mini-apps and trading. By March 2026, Coinbase Chief Executive Officer Brian Armstrong said the social functions “didn’t quite work,” and the company shifted its attention toward trading tools.

wallet becomes a multichain trading interface

Coinbase Wallet remains self-custodial, meaning users retain control of the private keys that secure their assets. That structure differs from Coinbase’s central exchange app, where the company handles custody for customer accounts.

Kass said assets can be available in the wallet by default after they are minted on a supported chain. The wallet is also designed to detect and hide tokens associated with scams or malicious activity, a growing concern as users move across chains with differing token standards and verification systems.

The app’s trading activity occurs onchain rather than through Coinbase’s conventional centralized order book. Kass said the wallet includes social trading functions that allow users to follow the activity of other traders. Such features can make onchain activity easier to discover, although visible wallets do not necessarily reveal a trader’s broader portfolio, risk controls or rationale for a transaction.

Coinbase Wallet’s new product scope places more complex markets alongside ordinary token transfers and storage. Perpetual futures are derivatives contracts without an expiry date, while prediction markets allow participants to trade contracts tied to the outcomes of events. Tokenized stocks are blockchain-based instruments designed to provide exposure linked to shares or other equity-related assets, and their legal structure can vary sharply between providers and jurisdictions.

Kass said Coinbase reviews new markets and asset types before adding them to the wallet. Coinbase also said the wallet generates revenue through trading and product fees, but did not disclose a detailed fee schedule or say whether the redesign had changed its user totals.

robinhood chain and monad join network list

Coinbase Wallet now supports Base, Robinhood Chain, Solana, Bitcoin, Ethereum, BNB Chain, Monad, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon and Avalanche. Robinhood Chain and Monad were added after the Base App era, according to the company’s described network list.

The additions give the wallet access to ecosystems with different approaches to transaction costs, applications and liquidity. For users, that could reduce the need to maintain separate wallet products simply to interact with assets or decentralized applications deployed on different networks. It also creates a more demanding user-experience challenge: balances, token contracts, bridges and transaction fees can differ widely across chains.

Base will remain prominently featured in the wallet, Kass said. Coinbase’s stated plan is to add more networks as new chains launch, turning the app into a larger distribution channel for onchain applications rather than a product tied mainly to Coinbase’s own Ethereum layer-2 network.

That approach has limits. Adding a network does not make every application or financial product accessible in every country, and Coinbase has noted geographic restrictions on certain features. Users seeking perpetual futures or prediction-market contracts must check whether those services are permitted where they live before attempting to trade.

a reset after the social app experiment

The naming reversal also reflects a change in leadership and product direction during 2026. In July, Base creator Jesse Pollak transferred leadership of the app to Jordan “Cobie” Fish, after acknowledging that parts of its social and creator-focused feature set had not met expectations.

Pollak said at the time that the product would become less centered on Base as it developed into a broader trading platform. The Coinbase Wallet relaunch formally carries out that shift: Base is one of several supported networks, while trading and discovery have moved to the center of the interface.

The decision gives Coinbase a self-custody product that can test markets outside the selection available through its regulated, custodial app. That may allow the company to introduce emerging onchain assets more quickly, but it also puts more responsibility on users to understand smart-contract and network risks.

Users moving assets between supported chains may face bridging risks, transaction failures and varying fee conditions. They should verify the receiving network before sending funds, particularly when transferring stablecoins or tokens that use the same ticker across multiple chains. A token’s name alone does not confirm that it is issued by the intended project.

Tokenized-stock products require additional care because blockchain tokens can have different rights from conventional shares. A token may represent an issuer claim, a derivative, or another contractual structure rather than direct ownership of stock and voting rights. Users should rely on the product issuer’s official documentation and verified contract address rather than search results or unsolicited links.

Coinbase’s return to the Wallet brand therefore pairs a familiar self-custody name with a more ambitious trading product. The company is betting that users who once opened a wallet mainly to hold or transfer crypto will increasingly want a single onchain interface for assets, derivatives and applications spread across multiple networks.
