Musk plans SpaceX stock for US children

2026-10-20 07:53

A proposal attributed to Elon Musk to distribute one SpaceX share to every child in the United States would place private-company equity at the center of a large-scale wealth-transfer experiment, potentially reaching roughly 70 million children. Based on a cited Oct. 19 share price of $147.96, the distribution would be valued at more than $10 billion, though SpaceX is privately held and its share prices are generally established through private transactions rather than a public-market closing price.

The plan would reportedly use “Trump accounts,” a nationwide securities-account system linked to children’s identification numbers. The accounts were launched in 2025 with a federal $1,000 contribution for newborns, invested in an index fund and generally unavailable for unrestricted use until the account holder turns 18.

About 4 million children had opened accounts by this year, according to the proposal’s figures, while 1 million had received the government seed contribution. Adding a SpaceX share for every U.S. child would expand the program’s reach well beyond existing account holders and give families exposure to the valuation of one of the world’s most closely watched private technology companies.

For children born in 2026, the structure could mean arriving at adulthood with a government-seeded index fund account and a SpaceX equity holding. The eventual value of either asset would depend on market performance, the terms governing the accounts, SpaceX’s future valuation and any decision to allow holders to sell or transfer the stock.

Private equity becomes a distribution tool

The reported SpaceX proposal sits alongside experiments by technology companies seeking to distribute assets or financial benefits directly to individuals outside conventional welfare and tax systems. These projects differ sharply in design: some issue tradeable crypto tokens, while others reserve company equity for charitable or public-benefit structures.

World, the digital identity project associated with OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman, began distributing its WLD token in 2023 after users verified their identity through iris scans. The system uses a spherical imaging device, called an Orb, at participating physical locations. Verified users received WLD tokens in a digital wallet, which could be exchanged for cash where trading access was available.

World has said its identity system combines biometric verification with cryptographic tools, including zero-knowledge proofs. Those proofs are designed to let a person demonstrate that they have been verified without repeatedly revealing the underlying personal information. The project has operated across dozens of countries, although regulators in several jurisdictions have restricted or challenged biometric data collection.

The model gives recipients an immediately tradeable asset, but its usefulness as recurring income is constrained by token volatility. WLD’s market value has fallen substantially from earlier levels, showing the practical difference between issuing a digital token and providing a predictable cash benefit. A token distribution can create access to an asset, yet it does not guarantee stable purchasing power.

Anthropic sets aside equity for public benefit

Anthropic announced on Oct. 18, 2026 that it had created an Anthropic Public Benefit Trust funded with 5% of the company’s equity. The company said its board could add another 2% stake if Anthropic’s valuation rises 50% above a predetermined baseline.

The structure is a wholly owned limited liability company rather than a conventional charitable foundation. Anthropic said it could use the entity to make large nonprofit donations and provide funding directly to specified groups.

Anthropic also said that roughly 20% of its equity had been designated for public-benefit purposes after including the new allocation and other commitments. The company cited pledges by its founders to donate 80% of their personal holdings, alongside an employee matching initiative that it said had drawn participation from about half its workforce.

Using valuation expectations of $1.5 trillion to $2 trillion cited in the proposal, a 20% public-benefit allocation could be worth $300 billion at the low end. Dividing that amount across roughly 340 million U.S. residents would equate to about $880 per person, though Anthropic has not presented the trust as a universal cash-payment program and the value would remain linked to the company’s equity.

The comparison with the SpaceX proposal shows how corporate shares can be positioned as a source of social distributions without becoming a regular public benefit. A one-time share grant gives recipients potential upside, but it also transfers market risk to households. A trust funded with private-company stock may finance future grants, yet its capacity depends on a company’s valuation, liquidity and governance choices.

Cash-transfer evidence sets a demanding benchmark

Direct distributions are often discussed alongside universal basic income, which generally refers to unconditional and recurring cash payments. The evidence from cash-transfer programs suggests that recipients frequently use payments to stabilize daily expenses, but financing a permanent national program remains difficult.

Finland’s 2017 trial paid 2,000 unemployed participants €560 a month for two years. Reported results included improved self-reported well-being, while employment effects were limited. Stockton, California’s 2019 program gave 125 residents $500 each month, with recipients directing money toward food, rent and car repairs while many remained in work.

A larger U.S. study running from November 2020 through October 2023 included 3,000 participants in Texas and Illinois. One thousand participants received $1,000 per month, while 2,000 received $50. The study found that those receiving the larger payment worked an average of 1.3 fewer hours each week, equivalent to eight fewer working days per year. It also reported a 10% rise in the share of recipients seeking jobs and a $310 increase in average monthly spending.

Food accounted for $67 of that additional spending, rent for $52 and transportation for $50, according to the study. It found no measurable improvement in physical health after three years and $36,000 in cumulative payments.

A nationwide $1,000 monthly payment for 260 million U.S. adults would cost about $3.1 trillion annually under the figures cited in the proposal. With federal annual revenue estimated near $5.2 trillion, that would consume roughly 60% of receipts.

Alaska’s Permanent Fund offers a more durable, though much smaller, example of recurring public payments. Created in 1976 with oil revenue, the fund has paid annual dividends to residents since 1982, funded by resource income and investment returns. Corporate stock grants may create substantial individual windfalls, but turning them into a long-term public-income system would require a similarly durable source of cash flow rather than appreciation alone.
