Bitcoin hashrate rises as public miners expand

2026-10-22 13:57

Bitcoin’s network hashrate has climbed roughly 45% from its summer low, recovering from about 726 exahashes per second in July to around 1,050 EH/s on Wednesday, according to blockchain analytics platform CryptoQuant. The rebound points to renewed mining capacity coming online even as Bitcoin traded near $81,843 at the opening of US equities markets on Thursday, well below the levels seen during the network’s previous hashrate peak.

CryptoQuant founder and CEO Ki Young Ju called the increase an “indirect bullish signal” in a post on X, linking it to traditional finance support for publicly listed mining companies. Mining firms have continued purchasing and deploying machines, expanding the computing power dedicated to processing Bitcoin blocks and securing the network.

Hashrate reflects the collective computing power miners direct toward Bitcoin. A higher figure generally makes the network more expensive to attack because a potential attacker would need to control a larger volume of specialized hardware. Ju said the improvement strengthens Bitcoin’s security and supports its underlying case as a store of value.

The recovery has not yet returned the network to its record level. CryptoQuant data shows Bitcoin’s hashrate reached 1,305 EH/s in October 2025, when Bitcoin traded above $111,000. The gap between the current hashrate and that record suggests miners are restoring capacity after a substantial pullback rather than entering an entirely new peak cycle.

Public miners continue adding machines

Nasdaq-listed NIP Group offered one example of the expansion trend on Tuesday, announcing a third on-rack asset purchase agreement for approximately 4.47 EH/s of Bitcoin mining equipment that is already deployed.

Because the machines are operating rather than awaiting installation, NIP Group said the transaction is expected to increase Bitcoin production immediately after closing. Across its three announced purchase tranches, the company expects its total hashrate to reach 13.85 EH/s.

The deal would represent a major increase from NIP Group’s current operating scale. Ziven data ranked the company as the 16th-largest public Bitcoin miner, with 3.11 EH/s of operating hashrate. Bitdeer held the leading position in Ziven’s ranking, with 79.9 EH/s.

Purchasing machines that are already racked and operational can allow miners to avoid some of the delays associated with building facilities, obtaining power capacity and installing hardware. It also gives buyers a faster route to additional block rewards, though the value of those rewards remains dependent on Bitcoin’s market price, network mining difficulty and operating costs.

The industry’s economics are becoming more competitive as capacity returns. When hashrate increases, Bitcoin’s mining difficulty typically adjusts higher over time to keep block production near its programmed schedule. That means each miner needs more computing power to maintain the same share of network rewards.

Network strength and mining profitability can diverge

A rising hashrate is often read as a sign that miners believe they can operate profitably over a longer period, particularly when companies are committing capital to additional equipment. Yet it does not automatically translate into stronger mining-company share prices or a near-term move in Bitcoin.

Public miners operate with a different risk profile from Bitcoin itself. Their results depend on hardware purchases, electricity agreements, debt, dilution, facility execution and the rising difficulty of winning block rewards. Many have also pursued data-center and artificial intelligence infrastructure opportunities, leaving their shares sensitive to movements in both cryptocurrency and technology markets.

That sensitivity was visible on Wednesday as mining stocks sold off alongside US equities. NIP Group fell 6.8% to close at $6.10, extending its decline over the previous year to 86%, according to Yahoo Finance. TeraWulf, Core Scientific, Cipher Mining and IREN each declined by roughly 12% as US stocks recorded their sharpest selloff since July.

The immediate trigger was higher-than-expected inflation data, which weighed on companies associated with technology infrastructure and other rate-sensitive sectors. Mining companies frequently require substantial upfront capital to buy machines and develop data centers, making financing conditions a central consideration for their valuations.

Capacity additions raise the pressure on smaller operators

The hashrate rebound places smaller or less efficient miners under greater pressure. Large publicly traded companies can sometimes access public equity markets, equipment-financing arrangements and long-term infrastructure contracts that are harder for independent operators to obtain. Their ability to acquire deployed capacity also lets them increase output without waiting for new construction.

At the same time, adding hashrate does not guarantee that an expansion will produce the expected financial return. A stronger network makes Bitcoin more resilient, but it divides future block rewards among more computing power. Mining firms are effectively competing for a fixed issuance schedule, requiring them to keep electricity and hardware costs under control as rivals expand.

Bitcoin’s current hashrate remains about 255 EH/s below the October 2025 record cited by CryptoQuant, leaving room for further recovery if miners continue bringing new fleets online. The latest figures show that capital expenditure by public operators is still translating into measurable network capacity, even while Bitcoin and mining-company shares trade below their earlier highs.
