Alphabet shares fall after hours despite Google Cloud growth

2026-10-29 07:24

Alphabet shares fell nearly 10% in after-hours trading on Oct. 28 despite a sharp acceleration in Google Cloud revenue, as the company's quarterly figures underscored the cost of funding its expanding artificial intelligence infrastructure.

The stock closed the regular session at $324.89, up 1.34%, before falling to $292.50 by 19:59 ET, according to the price point cited in the market data. That represented a 9.97% decline from the closing price, though after-hours quotes can move sharply on relatively thin trading volumes.

Alphabet reported that Google Cloud revenue more than doubled from a year earlier to $30.709 billion in the third quarter. The segment generated $11.121 billion in operating profit, producing an operating margin of roughly 36.2%, based on the company's disclosed figures.

The market reaction followed a quarter in which Alphabet's capital expenditures exceeded cash generated from operations. The company reported $42.290 billion in operating cash flow and $51.355 billion in spending on property and equipment, implying negative free cash flow of about $9.065 billion using the conventional operating-cash-flow-minus-capex calculation.

That cash gap places the focus on how quickly Alphabet can convert its AI and cloud buildout into durable revenue without allowing data-center spending to outrun the cash generated by its advertising business.

Cloud growth comes with rising infrastructure demands

Alphabet reported total third-quarter revenue of $127.577 billion, a 25% increase from the same period a year earlier. Operating profit rose 30% to $40.576 billion, showing that the company's core businesses remained highly profitable even as infrastructure costs climbed.

Google Cloud accounted for about 24% of quarterly revenue, based on Alphabet's segment figures. Its growth rate far exceeded that of the company's larger advertising operations, but advertising remained the financial foundation of the group.

Google Search and other revenue increased 12% year over year, while YouTube advertising revenue rose about 9%. Advertising generated roughly $82 billion during the quarter, or close to 64% of Alphabet's overall revenue.

The contrast between the two businesses shapes the debate around Alphabet's spending. Search and YouTube continue to supply large, recurring cash flows, while the cloud operation is expanding through products that require extensive physical infrastructure, including servers, networking equipment and data centers.

Alphabet said the cloud result included sales of TPU systems, its specialized AI computing hardware, as well as usage-based cloud services and subscriptions. Those revenue streams can have different billing schedules and cash-collection patterns, making a single quarter of free-cash-flow data an incomplete measure of the cloud division's underlying demand.

Even so, the scale of capital expenditure gives traders a concrete figure to watch in future earnings. Sustained infrastructure spending could be manageable if cloud revenue and operating profit continue rising at a comparable pace. A slowdown in cloud bookings or margins would make the present investment cycle harder to justify.

Investment losses weighed on reported earnings

Net income attributable to common shareholders was approximately $26.17 billion, lower than in the previous-year period. Alphabet reported GAAP earnings per share of $2.12.

The company said losses on equity securities investments totaled about $8.7 billion and reduced earnings per share by roughly $0.55. Such mark-to-market movements can materially affect reported earnings even when they do not reflect a change in the operating performance of Google Search, YouTube or Google Cloud.

The equity losses add another source of volatility to a quarter already shaped by heavy capital spending. Alphabet's operating profit increased year over year, but the combination of investment marks and infrastructure expenditure gives traders fewer simple headline figures on which to assess the earnings release.

Alphabet also said the Gemini application had reached 1 billion users. The company did not connect that figure to paid subscriptions, revenue or a separate profit measure in the disclosed results.

The user figure demonstrates the reach Alphabet has achieved for its consumer-facing AI products, but it does not settle the monetization question. Building AI services for a large user base can increase demand for computing resources before those services produce a directly measurable return.

AI spending becomes a market-wide earnings test

Alphabet's quarter adds to a broader scrutiny of technology companies that are committing large sums to AI-related computing capacity. The central issue is increasingly less about whether demand for AI tools exists and more about the timing of returns on the data centers needed to run them.

For Alphabet, cloud growth provides evidence that commercial demand is rising. A 103% increase in cloud revenue and an operating margin above 36% indicate that the segment is already far beyond an experimental business. Yet the negative free-cash-flow calculation shows the company is spending ahead of near-term cash generation.

This tension can also influence cryptocurrency markets, particularly when digital assets are trading in close alignment with large U.S. technology shares. Risk-sensitive crypto assets have often reacted quickly to sharp changes in equity sentiment, though a single company's after-hours move does not establish a broader market trend or predict Bitcoin's direction.

The supplied market commentary pointed to $82,500 as a Bitcoin support area and suggested that a break below it could expose prices to the low-$70,000 range. Those levels are technical trading reference points rather than conclusions drawn from Alphabet's earnings, and their relevance depends on broader liquidity, derivatives positioning and spot-market demand.

Alphabet's next reports will give a clearer view of whether its record infrastructure spending is beginning to translate into larger cloud cash flows. Until then, the company's results leave traders balancing an unusually rapid cloud expansion against the immediate cost of building the computing capacity behind it.
