Perpetual futures | How are futures trading fees calculated?

2026-09-16 03:18

The trading fee you pay on a futures order depends on two main things: the value of the order that is actually filled and the fee rate that applies to the execution. That rate can differ depending on whether your order is filled as maker or taker and your current VIP level.

Leverage does not directly affect your trading fee. Understanding these factors can help you estimate your costs before placing a trade and see why the fee may differ from one order to another.

How are futures trading fees charged?

Futures trading fees are calculated based on the actual filled value of your order.

Here are the main points to know:

  • Trading fees are charged only when an order is filled.

  • The fee is based on the value of the portion filled.

  • Maker and taker executions have different fee rates.

  • Your current VIP level determines your applicable maker and taker fee rates.

  • Trading fees are deducted from your position margin.

If an order is partially filled, you are charged only for the portion that is filled. If it is filled through multiple executions, the trading fee is calculated separately for each fill.

What is the difference between maker and taker?

Whether an execution is classified as maker or taker depends on how your order interacts with the order book.

Maker

A maker order adds liquidity to the order book.

For example, if you place a limit order that does not fill immediately and instead remains on the order book waiting to be matched, the resulting execution is generally classified as maker.

Maker fee rates are generally lower than taker fee rates.

Taker

A taker order removes liquidity from the order book.

If your order immediately matches an existing order, the resulting execution is classified as taker. Market orders, for example, are generally taker orders because they are designed to execute against liquidity already available in the order book.

Taker fee rates are generally higher than maker fee rates.

Note: Maker or taker status is determined by how your order is actually executed, not simply by the order type you select. For example, a limit order can still be classified as taker if it immediately matches an existing order.

How do you calculate a futures trading fee?

Use the following formula:

Trading fee = Filled value × Maker or taker fee rate

Here are two examples using a BTCUSDT futures order with a filled value of 100 USDT.

Maker

Suppose you place a limit order with a filled value of 100 USDT. The order remains on the order book before being matched, so the execution is classified as maker. Your applicable maker fee rate is 0.02%.

100 USDT × 0.02% = 0.02 USDT

The trading fee for this fill is 0.02 USDT.

Taker

Suppose you place a market order that is filled for 100 USDT and your applicable taker fee rate is 0.05%.

100 USDT × 0.05% = 0.05 USDT

The trading fee for this fill is 0.05 USDT.

Your actual rate depends on your VIP level and the fee schedule in effect when your order is filled.

How does your VIP level affect trading fees?

Toobit uses a tiered VIP fee structure, so your maker and taker fee rates can vary depending on your VIP level.

Your VIP level is determined by qualifying criteria such as your asset balance, 30-day futures trading volume, and 30-day spot trading volume. Higher VIP levels generally receive lower trading fee rates.

What else should you know?

  • Trading fees apply only to the portion of an order that is filled. If an order is canceled without being filled, no trading fee applies.

  • If an order is filled in multiple parts, the trading fee is calculated based on each actual fill.

  • Leverage does not directly affect your trading fee rate.

  • Maker or taker status depends on how your order is actually executed.

  • The fee rate applied to a fill is based on your VIP level and the applicable fee schedule at the time of execution.

  • Fee rates and related rules may change. Refer to the latest information displayed on Toobit and official announcements.
