Zcash surged above $1,000 on Sept. 6 and reached an intraday high of $1,256.92 before retreating to $1,128.05 by 14:00, capping a rise of nearly 400% from its June low of $251.39. The rally has pushed one of cryptocurrency’s longest-running privacy projects back into focus, while also reviving scrutiny of its governance, funding structure and a recently disclosed flaw that created an unresolved question around the shielded supply.
The sharp move has drawn highly leveraged opposition. Garrett Jin, an on-chain trader, held a ZEC short position valued at $45.11 million on Sept. 8, using 3x leverage and an average entry price of $576.30. The position, built up as ZEC climbed, showed an unrealized loss of $22.20 million at the time described.
Jin had closed a Bitcoin long with $106.18 million in notional value before increasing the ZEC short. His reported exposure later rose to 39,760 ZEC after he added roughly 7,000 tokens near $1,195, lifting the floating loss to about $24 million. A position of that size can add to short-term volatility if the trader is forced to buy ZEC to reduce risk during another upward move.
Wang revisits Zcash’s early funding model
Wang, co-founder of mining pool F2Pool, used a series of Sept. 8 posts to revisit disputes that have followed Zcash for years. He criticized the project’s development record and referenced an earlier incident in which 701.4 Bitcoin was mistakenly transferred instead of $701.40.
His broader criticism centered on the way Zcash initially distributed block rewards. When the network launched in 2016, its protocol directed 20% of each block reward to a founders’ reward for four years. That allocation amounted to roughly 2.1 million ZEC, equal to 10% of the cryptocurrency’s fixed maximum supply of 21 million coins.
The original founders’ reward expired in 2020, but a separate development fund retained a 20% reward allocation. Under ZIP 1014, the funds distributed between 2020 and 2024 went to Bootstrap, the Zcash Foundation and Major Grants. Supporters of development funding have argued that it provided a predictable budget for protocol maintenance and research. Critics have long contended that the structure concentrated influence among entities linked to the project’s early leadership.
The renewed debate arrives after a difficult year for Zcash governance. In January 2026, the entire Electric Coin Company team departed following a public conflict with Bootstrap, a nonprofit involved in the network’s governance. Electric Coin Company, widely known as ECC, had been one of the central teams responsible for Zcash development.
The former ECC employees subsequently created a new company to continue working on Zcash. By late February, Bootstrap announced a proposed resolution under which ECC would gradually wind down and technical assets would be transferred. The episode exposed how much operational coordination around an ostensibly decentralized network still depended on a small group of organizations and personnel.
Orchard bug leaves supply question unresolved
The more consequential issue raised during the rally is the Orchard shielded-pool flaw disclosed in May. On May 29, security researcher Taylor Hornby identified a serious defect in the zero-knowledge proof circuit used by Orchard, Zcash’s newer shielded transaction system.
Project disclosures said the vulnerability could theoretically have enabled an attacker to create unlimited counterfeit ZEC without producing clear on-chain evidence. The possibility did not establish that counterfeit coins were created, but Orchard’s privacy design means the network cannot cryptographically prove whether the bug was exploited during the roughly four years it may have existed.
That limitation places the discussion beyond ordinary wallet tracking. Zcash offers both transparent and shielded transactions. Transparent addresses expose transaction information on the public blockchain, while shielded transfers hide key details such as the sender, recipient and amount. Monitoring activity in transparent pools can reveal unusual public transfers, but it cannot determine whether hidden inflation occurred within the vulnerable Orchard pool.
Developers responded by temporarily disabling Orchard-related operations, then restoring functionality after applying changes. The NU6.2 upgrade re-enabled the circuit following the fix, completing the emergency response over several days.
The episode illustrates a trade-off at the heart of privacy-focused networks. Strong transaction privacy protects users from public surveillance, yet it can also make retrospective auditing harder when a cryptographic flaw affects token issuance. In a transparent blockchain, suspicious inflation can generally be measured directly against the chain’s known supply. With a shielded pool, proving the absence of undiscovered counterfeit coins may be impossible after the fact.
Price rally meets a fragmented market structure
Zcash documentation has consistently made clear that privacy depends on how users transact, rather than simply on holding ZEC. The network supports shielded transfers, but many wallets and service providers continue to use transparent addresses because they are easier to integrate. Users seeking privacy need a wallet or service that enables shielded transactions by default.
That practical distinction complicates attempts to value Zcash purely as a privacy asset. Its technology can provide shielded payments, but the user experience depends heavily on wallet support, service integrations and whether participants actually choose private transactions over transparent ones.
Wang’s posts characterized the price surge as speculation disconnected from the project’s utility and history. His criticism reflects a familiar divide in the Zcash community: advocates point to years of cryptographic research and a functioning privacy system, while detractors focus on development funding, governance disputes and the uncertainty created by the Orchard flaw.
The current market setup adds a separate trading risk. ZEC’s move from $251.39 in June to more than $1,250 this month has already shown how quickly liquidity conditions can shift. Jin’s large underwater short could amplify a further rally if it is reduced under pressure, while a sharp reversal would expose late buyers who entered after the strongest part of the advance.
For Zcash, the immediate test is whether its renewed attention translates into greater use of shielded transactions and more stable ecosystem support, rather than remaining concentrated in a fast-moving market trade.
