X prepares to add crypto trading features

India is preparing to test tokenized government-linked debt with a planned bond sale by state-owned Rural Electrification Corp. in September, a pilot that would place issuance and settlement on blockchain rails under the joint oversight of the country’s securities regulator and central bank.

The proposed sale, expected to be worth less than 5 billion rupees, or roughly $57 million, would be India’s first tokenized bond issuance. The project is expected to be introduced at an annual fintech conference in Mumbai and would give regulators a controlled setting to examine whether distributed-ledger systems can handle core post-trade functions for conventional securities.

Rural Electrification Corp., a government-owned infrastructure finance company, would issue the bond under the pilot. Keeping the offering below 5 billion rupees limits the initial operational and market exposure while allowing authorities to test processes including investor records, ownership transfers, settlement and regulatory supervision.

Tokenizing a bond means recording claims on the instrument through blockchain-based infrastructure rather than relying solely on conventional centralized recordkeeping systems. For a debt market as large as India’s, the more immediate question is whether the technology can reduce reconciliation work and speed settlement without creating new legal, custody or cybersecurity risks.

Asia’s regulators are moving from pilots toward market infrastructure

India’s initiative arrives as authorities in other major Asian markets examine blockchain systems for securities settlement, rather than limiting experimentation to cryptocurrencies or privately issued tokens.

Japan’s Financial Services Agency, Ministry of Finance, central bank and financial institutions are expected to establish a study group this summer on a blockchain-based payments system for real-time settlement of stock and Japanese government bond transactions. A formal plan could be drafted as early as the start of 2027.

Japan’s timetable remains long-term. If authorities approve the project, construction could take several years, with operations potentially beginning in the early 2030s. Yet the target is ambitious: Japanese equities currently settle two business days after a trade, while Japanese government bonds settle on the following day.

Real-time settlement could reduce the period in which parties remain exposed to a counterparty failing to deliver cash or securities. It would also require market participants to have liquidity available immediately, creating a practical challenge for banks, brokers and clearing institutions accustomed to delayed settlement cycles.

Thailand is focusing on regulated access to existing digital assets. The country’s securities regulator has opened a public consultation on draft rules for spot Bitcoin and Ether exchange-traded funds, including standards for foreign custodians. The proposal would require every digital-asset ETF to be established and managed by a licensed asset-management firm under Thailand’s existing ETF rules as well as its digital-asset investment requirements.

Taken together, the Indian, Japanese and Thai initiatives place blockchain and cryptocurrency products inside familiar regulatory structures: bond issuance, securities settlement and licensed fund management. That approach differs sharply from the rapid, lightly screened token launches that continue to dominate activity on public blockchains.

X trading plans remain preliminary

Social-media platform X may be preparing to add cryptocurrency trading functions, according to Nikita Bier, the company’s former head of product. Bier said trading buttons are expected to go live after X introduced Cashtags, a feature allowing users to embed Solana and Ethereum charts in posts.

Bier also said users would be able to paste a token contract address into X to view newly minted assets. Contract addresses are the unique blockchain identifiers used to locate a specific token, a function that can help users distinguish an asset from similarly named copies but does not determine whether the token is legitimate or safe to trade.

No timeline, product structure or regulatory framework for the proposed trading tools was provided in the information available. Any rollout would place X alongside social platforms and financial applications seeking to shorten the path between market discussion and a transaction, a design that can increase convenience while also accelerating speculative activity around new tokens.

U.S. derivatives and capital markets activity expands

Hyperliquid’s policy unit has asked the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Commodity Futures Trading Commission to confirm whether equity perpetual contracts can be listed as security futures. Perpetual contracts are derivatives designed without a fixed expiry date, unlike traditional futures.

The request follows a May development in which the CFTC began allowing the first perpetual contracts to list on U.S. exchanges as futures products while addressing classification questions. Extending the structure to equity-linked products would bring a familiar crypto-market instrument into an area where securities and commodities rules overlap.

Prediction-market operator Kalshi has also disclosed roughly $1.12 billion in equity financing through Securities and Exchange Commission filings, against a total offering size of $1.5 billion. The filing reflects an ongoing capital-raising process and adds to the company’s resources as event-contract markets draw greater scrutiny from U.S. regulators and traditional financial firms.

In South Korea, Dunamu, the operator of Upbit, said it has contacted the SEC and CFTC about a potential U.S. listing, although it said no decision has been made. Dunamu also said it has not shifted its financial reporting to U.S. GAAP and plans to establish an IPO committee.

Questions surround World Liberty Financial buyer

Aqua 1 Foundation previously spent $100 million buying WLFI tokens issued by World Liberty Financial, making it the largest disclosed purchaser, ahead of the $75 million cumulative amount linked to Sun Yuchen.

Reports identified Zhou Guren, born in Shanghai in 1984, as Aqua 1’s actual controller. Zhou remains listed on China’s enforcement information disclosure platform as a discredited enforcement subject in connection with six cases involving arrears totaling tens of millions of yuan, according to the report. A charging document provided by the UK Crown Prosecution Service also linked Zhou to a money-laundering case in the United Kingdom.

The episode illustrates the due-diligence pressures surrounding token sales, particularly where large purchases can influence public perceptions of demand while the identity and financial background of a buyer may be difficult to establish quickly.
