Vitalik Buterin buys 16 ETH in $FOLD auction

2026-08-25 03:55

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin committed 16 ETH, worth about $28,000 at the time, to a public CCA auction connected to privacy protocol The Interfold, placing an unusually visible endorsement behind a newly launched network token. The purchase came ahead of $FOLD’s Aug. 19 token generation event and helped draw attention to a project whose technology is aimed at private, verifiable computation rather than consumer-facing trading.

$FOLD subsequently rose more than sevenfold from its post-launch levels, according to the figures provided, reaching a fully diluted valuation of about $100 million after a volatile first week of trading. Its move illustrates how a public transaction by a prominent Ethereum developer can rapidly become a trading catalyst, especially when a token has a relatively limited initial float.

Buterin had not claimed the $FOLD acquired through the auction at the time described. His participation nevertheless became a focal point for traders, who pushed the token’s market capitalization from roughly $28 million to a peak near $140 million before a later listing-related surge.

A two-stage rally followed the token launch

The first phase of $FOLD’s rally began after the token generation event, with market attention centering on Buterin’s auction participation and earlier public references to The Interfold. The token’s market capitalization climbed from about $28 million to nearly $140 million before the later listing event, based on the supplied market figures.

A second, sharper move followed on Aug. 23, when $FOLD’s price briefly doubled. Market capitalization reached about $230 million before falling back toward the level that preceded the listing-driven jump. The reversal left the token trading near the range associated with the earlier wave of attention around Buterin’s purchase.

About 27% of the $FOLD supply was circulating at the time described. That placed its circulating market capitalization near $27 million while its fully diluted valuation — a calculation based on the entire eventual supply — stood close to $100 million. The difference between those figures leaves the token’s price particularly sensitive to changes in available supply as well as shifts in demand.

Early token trading can produce large valuation changes from relatively modest flows when much of the supply remains locked, reserved, or otherwise unavailable. In $FOLD’s case, the market appeared to price public attention more rapidly than it priced the protocol’s technical model, according to the account of the trading period.

The protocol targets private shared computation

The Interfold is an open-source multi-party computation protocol developed by Gnosis Guild. It is designed for situations where several parties need to run a calculation together but do not trust one another with their raw data.

The project’s stated design allows participants to submit encrypted inputs, process them, and verify an outcome without exposing the underlying information to another participant or a central operator. That model could be useful where transparency over a result is needed but the data behind it must remain confidential.

The Interfold calls its encrypted computation environment E3. Under the project’s description, an E3 instance is created separately for each computation involving encrypted data. Once the task is completed, the E3 is closed and does not retain residual data from the calculation.

The architecture avoids relying on a single operator or trusted hardware environment, two dependencies that can create practical or governance risks in privacy-focused systems. Instead, nodes performing ciphertext computation and decryption must stake $FOLD to qualify for those tasks, giving the token a defined role in the network’s operating model.

Anonymous DAO voting is among the use cases outlined by the project. Individual members could keep their votes private while the final outcome remains verifiable, addressing a recurring problem in on-chain governance: public ballots can expose voting strategies, create pressure campaigns, and encourage members to follow visible large holders.

Buterin had referenced The Interfold before the auction

Buterin’s auction transaction was not his first public interaction with The Interfold. He referenced the project on X in late May and again during the dappcon event in July, giving the protocol exposure within Ethereum’s developer and research community before the token launch.

His 16 ETH commitment also stood out because large, publicly disclosed purchases of new crypto-related assets by Buterin have been uncommon. The supplied account identified his previous such purchase as a 32 ETH contribution, then valued at about $107,000, to an NFT sale associated with prediction-market project Truemarkets in November 2024.

Truemarkets’ $TRUE token later reached a fully diluted valuation below $20 million and did not receive major exchange listings, according to the same account. The comparison has limits: $FOLD entered trading with a different distribution profile, a larger reported valuation, and about 27% of its supply already circulating soon after launch.

Those distinctions can shape market behavior. A token with a larger circulating float may offer more immediately tradeable supply, while a wide gap between circulating value and fully diluted value keeps future supply releases central to valuation discussions. Traders assessing $FOLD’s next phase will likely focus on whether network use and node participation begin to support demand beyond the initial attention cycle.

The Interfold’s technical proposition gives $FOLD a clearer functional connection to the protocol than many newly issued tokens, since nodes must stake it to take part in encrypted computation and decryption. Whether that mechanism translates into sustained token demand will depend on adoption of privacy-preserving applications such as confidential governance, rather than on the short-lived market reaction to a single high-profile buyer.
