VeriIndex gives exchanges real time index control

2026-10-21 14:33

Vermiculus Financial Technology AB has launched VeriIndex, a real-time index engine intended to let exchanges and marketplaces calculate, administer, and publish indices based on activity in their own markets. The Stockholm-based market infrastructure provider said the system can run independently or connect with trading, clearing, and post-trade platforms, including its own VeriTrade exchange system.

The product targets a practical gap for venues creating benchmarks for newer market segments: producing reliable index values while handling the operational changes that can alter an index’s composition or calculation. VeriIndex combines live calculation, corporate-action processing and approved index changes in a single platform, according to Vermiculus.

At launch, the system supports price-return and total-return indices. A price-return index tracks changes in the market price of its constituents, while a total-return index also incorporates income such as dividends where applicable. The latter is often used for performance measurement because it accounts for a broader share of an asset’s economic return.

Live calculation and scheduled change testing

Vermiculus said its calculator continuously processes live market activity and distributes index values through standardized export interfaces. That could allow an exchange operator to provide index data to trading systems, market-data services, risk tools or products that reference an index without maintaining separate calculation infrastructure.

Index products depend heavily on the treatment of planned events. A benchmark may need changes when an instrument is added or removed, a constituent is adjusted, or a corporate action affects a listed security. An inaccurate or poorly timed update can create discrepancies between the published index level and instruments designed to track it.

VeriIndex includes a next-business-day simulation function designed to address that operational challenge. The tool lets index administrators model the effects of scheduled corporate and index actions before they become active, Vermiculus said. Operators can then review and amend the projected outcome ahead of the production calculation.

The feature places simulation inside the daily administration workflow rather than leaving venues to test calculation changes through separate systems or manual processes. For marketplaces with instruments whose trading rules or settlement arrangements can change rapidly, the ability to preview an index adjustment could reduce the risk of publishing an unintended value when a new session begins.

A configurable administration framework allows operators to add calculation and adjustment methods, extend instrument coverage and introduce pricing features, according to the company. The design suggests Vermiculus is aiming at venues that need to build specialized benchmarks rather than only replicate conventional equity indices.

A senior index specialist at Vermiculus, Ohlsson, said the platform is intended to give operators direct control over daily index administration while allowing them to test changes before they go live.

Potential use in tokenized and event-driven markets

Vermiculus Deputy CEO Rouet-Leduc said VeriIndex could be used for indices linked to emerging asset classes, including prediction markets, tokenized assets and perpetual contracts.

Those categories present different calculation questions from a traditional listed-stock basket. Perpetual contracts, for example, do not have an expiry date and can incorporate funding-rate mechanics that affect how a benchmark is designed. Prediction-market contracts may settle based on the outcome of a specified event, creating a need for clear policies on pricing, market disruptions and settlement events.

Tokenized assets add another layer of complexity. A token may represent a financial instrument, a fund share, a claim on collateral or another form of asset exposure. An index administrator would need to define which prices qualify, how trading venues are selected, and how the index responds if liquidity moves between platforms or a token’s underlying structure changes.

Vermiculus did not announce a named exchange customer or a specific index product alongside the launch. Its emphasis on third-party integration means the product could be offered to operators running technology stacks beyond the company’s own software.

A modular addition to Vermiculus’ infrastructure suite

VeriIndex is natively integrated with VeriTrade, Vermiculus’ exchange trading system, the company said. The integration could give a market operator using VeriTrade a more direct route to launch indices based on instruments traded on that venue, while the standalone deployment option leaves room for use by existing exchanges with different core systems.

The company positions the engine as part of a cloud-native market infrastructure portfolio covering trading, clearing, post-trade processing and central securities depository operations. A central securities depository, or CSD, maintains records of securities ownership and supports settlement-related processes in conventional capital markets.

Adding an index engine extends that product range into a layer that can support benchmarks, market-data distribution and index-linked products. Exchanges have long used proprietary indices to package market activity into reference rates and tradeable products; the same operating model can apply to marketplaces seeking benchmarks for specialized instruments, provided that pricing and governance policies are clearly defined.

Founded in 2020, Vermiculus Financial Technology AB is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden. Its VeriIndex launch focuses on the less visible operational work behind an index: continuously processing prices, applying approved changes and checking the effects of scheduled actions before a published benchmark is altered.
