US stocks rise as Tesla and SpaceX fall

2026-11-05 07:30

U.S. equities rose sharply on Nov. 4, but Tesla moved in the opposite direction as traders reassessed how a changing political landscape could affect heavily regulated, capital-intensive projects tied to autonomous vehicles, robotics and AI infrastructure. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 3.03%, while the S&P 500 rose 1.58% and the Nasdaq Composite added 1.44%. Tesla shares fell 3.34% to $385.19.

The split suggested that the session was not a broad rejection of technology or growth stocks. Large platforms and several consumer and defensive companies advanced, while companies and suppliers linked to data-center construction, large computing projects and long-duration infrastructure spending faced more selective pressure.

Tesla's after-hours indication extended the move, with the shares quoted at $381.30 by 7:59 p.m. The decline came as markets absorbed election results that pointed to Democratic gains after Elon Musk had publicly participated in U.S. political activity and backed Republican candidates.

Tesla's market valuation increasingly rests on projects whose financial outcomes are harder to measure than quarterly vehicle deliveries. Its autonomous-driving systems, planned Robotaxi service, Optimus humanoid robot and energy-storage business are central to the company's growth narrative, but each depends on regulatory approvals, technical reliability and large-scale deployment before revenue can be assessed with the same clarity as vehicle sales.

Tesla's growth plans face a longer path to revenue

A Robotaxi operation would need to show more than self-driving capability. Service coverage, fleet utilization, maintenance costs, accident liability, insurance arrangements and rider demand would all shape the economics of a commercial rollout. Regulation can vary between states and cities, making the speed of expansion dependent on more than Tesla's software progress.

Optimus faces a different set of tests. Tesla would need to demonstrate that the robot can be produced at scale, perform useful tasks reliably and generate returns for customers in manufacturing, warehousing or logistics. A prototype demonstration can support interest in the product, but repeat orders and production economics would determine whether robotics becomes a material business line.

Tesla has also indicated that its 2026 capital expenditures could exceed $20 billion, directed toward computing capacity, data centers, manufacturing facilities and research and development. Such spending can support future growth, though it also raises the standard for execution when current cash generation must fund projects with uncertain commercialization timelines.

The Nov. 4 trading pattern placed a premium on nearer-term visibility. Companies with established revenue streams and less direct exposure to permitting, grid connections or high-cost physical buildouts were better positioned to participate in the broader market rally. Businesses dependent on major infrastructure commitments faced scrutiny over how quickly spending can become recurring cash flow.

AI infrastructure turns power into a market constraint

The pressure is not limited to vehicle makers or robotics developers. AI data centers require large quantities of chips, servers, cooling equipment and electricity, as well as suitable land and transmission access. A completed data center cannot generate expected returns if a utility connection is delayed, hardware shipments are constrained or customers do not use the computing capacity at the anticipated rate.

That creates a common bottleneck for AI developers, data-center operators and energy-intensive blockchain businesses: access to dependable, competitively priced power. Bitcoin mining, in particular, relies on specialized equipment running continuously and is highly sensitive to electricity costs, network competition and Bitcoin's market price.

The supplied material cited a late-October 2026 reading of 1,000 exahashes per second for Bitcoin network computing power. Hashrate measures the combined processing power securing the network. Higher hashrate generally reflects more machines competing for block rewards, which can tighten margins for mining operators unless revenue rises alongside operating costs.

A cited August 2026 study of a 20-megawatt mining installation connected to an Irish wind farm also illustrated the sensitivity of such projects to assumptions about energy and asset prices. The study found that the facility would not recover upfront costs within six years if Bitcoin fell below €60,000, according to the material provided.

Those calculations are especially relevant as AI infrastructure expands. AI operators and miners do not always compete directly for the same sites or contracts, and their energy profiles can differ. Yet both depend on grid capacity, electrical equipment, local permits and access to hardware. In regions where power demand exceeds available supply, new industrial loads can face longer interconnection queues and higher development costs.

Permitting risk becomes part of infrastructure valuations

Election outcomes can influence how quickly infrastructure projects advance, particularly when federal and state authorities differ over environmental reviews, energy policy, land use and local approval processes. The immediate impact is rarely uniform: local regulators, utilities and grid operators retain substantial influence over individual projects.

For companies spending heavily on computing and physical infrastructure, a delay can carry financial consequences even if the underlying demand remains strong. Construction expenses, equipment purchases and financing costs may arrive before the related facility produces revenue. The longer that gap lasts, the more markets tend to focus on capital discipline and the ability to fund growth without weakening margins or requiring additional financing.

SpaceX, which remains privately held, operates launch and Starlink satellite-internet businesses while increasing investment in infrastructure connected to computing and communications capacity. Reuters reported that SpaceX generated about $14.58 billion in third-quarter revenue and about $4.4 billion in net profit, with capital expenditures of roughly $19.593 billion. Reuters attributed the revenue increase to AI-related business expansion and growing Starlink connectivity services.

Long-term projections can improve without removing short-term execution risk. Morgan Stanley analyst Adam Jonas, as cited by Investing.com in the supplied material, raised forecasts for SpaceX revenue and operating profit and brought forward his estimate for positive free cash flow to 2031 from 2035. Such projections depend on assumptions about Starlink growth, margins, capital spending and funding needs.

The Nov. 4 selloff in Tesla and reported pressure on SpaceX-related pricing showed how quickly traders can reassess companies whose valuations depend on future infrastructure returns. The next tests will come from concrete operating measures: Tesla's deliveries, margins, energy sales and autonomous-driving progress; and, for SpaceX, Starlink expansion, launch execution and evidence that major infrastructure spending is producing durable cash flow.
