US stocks rise after midterm elections

2026-11-05 05:55

Macro

U.S. stocks rallied sharply in the first session after the midterm elections, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average gaining more than 1,500 points as traders positioned for a Democratic-controlled Congress alongside a Republican White House led by President Donald Trump.

The Dow climbed 3.03% to 53,356.12 on Nov. 4, a gain of 1,569.40 points. The S&P 500 advanced 1.58% to 7,688.62, while the Nasdaq Composite rose 1.44% to 25,736.51. Smaller companies also participated in the recovery, with the Russell 2000 up about 1.6%.

The broad advance arrived despite substantial differences between industries. Healthcare providers and renewable-energy companies led gains, while oil producers, defense contractors and politically connected companies fell sharply. The session resembled a repricing of individual policy risks rather than a uniform bet on stronger economic growth.

A Congress controlled by Democrats would be able to shape committee agendas, oversight investigations and spending negotiations, while a Republican president would retain veto power over legislation. That arrangement would make large policy packages harder to enact without cross-party agreement, placing greater emphasis on budget deadlines, executive actions and regulatory implementation.

Healthcare and clean energy lead the advance

Healthcare services were among the strongest areas of the market. HCA Healthcare rose 10.3%, making it one of the session's largest large-cap gainers. The move suggested traders saw less immediate risk of disruptive legislation affecting hospital operators under a divided federal government.

Clean-energy shares also moved higher. First Solar gained 4.6% and Enphase Energy added 3.7%. Those companies have faced a difficult trading environment whenever federal tax credits, manufacturing incentives and energy policy appear vulnerable to political change.

A Democratic Congress could provide more resistance to efforts to repeal or substantially alter existing clean-energy support programs, although the White House would retain meaningful influence over implementation, trade policy and executive priorities. The gains in solar-related shares reflected relief over the durability of existing incentives rather than certainty over new legislation.

The market's reaction also showed that traders were distinguishing between businesses supported by current law and companies whose outlook depends on future appropriations or large new government contracts. That difference may remain relevant as Congress begins work on annual spending measures and any negotiations over tax policy.

Oil and defense shares decline

Energy stocks moved in the opposite direction as crude oil prices dropped. Brent crude fell about 8.7% to $94.62 a barrel, while Exxon Mobil lost 4.6% and ConocoPhillips dropped 5.2%.

The fall in oil prices likely weighed more immediately on those companies than election politics. Lower crude prices can reduce expected revenue and cash flow for producers, especially when the decline is large enough to alter near-term assumptions about drilling activity, refining margins or shareholder returns.

The 10-year U.S. Treasury yield also declined, falling roughly 6.6 basis points to 4.88%. Lower yields generally reduce borrowing costs across financial markets and can support equity valuations, particularly for companies whose expected earnings lie further in the future. The Nasdaq's 1.44% gain occurred alongside that move in rates, even though chip stocks delivered a more mixed performance.

Defense contractors also sold off. Lockheed Martin declined 6.9%, Northrop Grumman fell 4.5%, and General Dynamics lost 2.6%. The moves indicated that traders were reassessing the outlook for defense budgets and procurement under a Congress likely to scrutinize Pentagon spending more aggressively.

Defense appropriations are rarely decided by one party alone, particularly when national security spending has bipartisan support. Yet changes in congressional leadership can affect hearings, contract oversight and the political appetite for higher budgets. Shares in major contractors often react quickly to those shifts, even when the underlying spending process takes months to unfold.

Politically linked companies face sharp losses

Several companies closely associated with Trump and prominent figures in his political orbit recorded steeper declines than the broader market. Trump Media fell 24.5%, Tesla dropped 3.3%, and SpaceX slipped 3.8%, according to the supplied market data.

Trump Media has historically traded with unusually high sensitivity to political developments and retail-trading sentiment, making its decline far larger than the fall in most major sectors. Tesla and SpaceX face different business conditions, ranging from electric-vehicle demand and manufacturing competition to government contracts and space policy, so their moves should not be viewed as a single referendum on the election result.

Among artificial intelligence-linked semiconductor names, Advanced Micro Devices rose about 1% after issuing a stronger growth outlook. Its gain showed that company-specific earnings expectations continued to matter even during a session dominated by politics and macroeconomic moves. The wider Nasdaq advance suggests traders remained willing to support technology shares as yields eased.

Gridlock may shift attention to existing policy

The election outcome points toward a period in which legislative ambitions could face tighter constraints. Democratic control of both chambers would give the party greater authority over congressional priorities, but a Republican president could block bills that do not attract sufficient bipartisan support.

That dynamic could limit the prospects for sweeping tax changes or major new industry rules, though it would not stop policy from changing through agency decisions, trade measures, enforcement actions or budget negotiations. Companies exposed to federal procurement, energy permits, healthcare reimbursement and tax credits may therefore remain especially sensitive to developments in Washington.

For cryptocurrency markets, the session offered a macroeconomic signal rather than a direct regulatory verdict. Falling Treasury yields can improve appetite for risk-sensitive assets, but the equity rally alone does not establish a reliable trading signal for Bitcoin, Ethereum or other digital assets. Crypto regulation would also remain subject to congressional bargaining, agency enforcement and court decisions, none of which are resolved simply by a divided government.

The first post-election session delivered a clear message from equities: traders welcomed lower yields and reduced fears of abrupt legislative change, while rapidly marking down sectors where commodity prices, federal spending or political connections created more immediate risks.
