US spot Bitcoin ETFs see monthly peak inflows

2026-10-20 06:12

ETFBTC

US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds attracted $526.7 million in net inflows on Monday, their strongest daily result in nearly a month, as BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust absorbed enough capital to offset withdrawals from two major competing products.

The return to net inflows followed two consecutive weeks in which US-listed spot Bitcoin ETFs collectively lost money. Farside Investors data showed the group had recorded about $229 million in net outflows last week, following $681 million in withdrawals the previous week.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, commonly known by its ticker IBIT, drew $665.2 million on Monday, according to Farside. That was more than the Bitcoin ETF sector’s combined net inflow, underlining how heavily the day’s result depended on one fund.

Fidelity’s Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund recorded $83.6 million in net outflows, while Grayscale Bitcoin Trust lost $54.9 million. The other spot Bitcoin ETFs reported no net flows, leaving BlackRock’s gains to carry the group into positive territory.

BlackRock inflow reverses a weak stretch

Monday marked the strongest day for the US spot Bitcoin ETF group since Sept. 22, when the funds attracted $714.7 million, according to Farside. It also represented a sharp reversal from Friday, when the products posted $82.4 million in combined net outflows.

The recent flow pattern has been uneven. On Oct. 7, US spot Bitcoin ETFs saw $483.9 million in net withdrawals, the largest daily outflow since June, based on Farside’s figures. Despite Monday’s rebound, the funds remained down by roughly $88 million for October on Farside’s daily totals.

That monthly figure places Monday’s move in context. A single large allocation into IBIT repaired much of the recent damage but did not establish a sustained month of net demand across the full set of funds. The concentration of flows also means the headline total may say more about BlackRock’s position in the market than about uniform demand for every Bitcoin ETF issuer.

IBIT has regularly emerged as the dominant vehicle when the ETF market receives large inflows, while other issuers have experienced more variable daily activity. In Monday’s case, the gap was particularly pronounced: BlackRock’s $665.2 million inflow exceeded the sector’s $526.7 million net total by $138.5 million, the amount absorbed by Fidelity and Grayscale withdrawals.

For market participants, ETF flows are closely watched because the products must generally acquire or sell Bitcoin as shares are created or redeemed, although daily fund flows do not translate mechanically into immediate price movements. The data instead offer a view into demand through regulated US brokerage and retirement-account channels.

Ether funds extend their outflow streak

Spot Ether ETFs moved in the opposite direction on Monday, posting $103.3 million in net outflows, Farside data showed. BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust accounted for $95.4 million of those withdrawals.

The Ether products also had a difficult prior week, losing about $320 million, according to Farside. That marked their third consecutive week of aggregate net outflows.

The divergence between the two ETF categories was clear on Monday: Bitcoin funds brought in more than half a billion dollars, while Ether funds lost more than $100 million. Yet the comparison should be treated carefully. Bitcoin’s fund market is larger and more established in the US, giving its products a deeper pool of assets and potentially larger day-to-day flow swings.

The Ether outflows also came primarily from a single BlackRock product, just as Bitcoin’s positive result was driven primarily by IBIT. That common feature limits the case for reading one day’s data as a broad, market-wide verdict on either asset. It does show that allocations within the US crypto ETF market can change quickly and remain concentrated in a small number of large issuers.

Flows remain a short-term measure of demand

The latest numbers show Bitcoin ETF demand recovering after a period of withdrawals, but the broader picture remains mixed. The funds posted two negative weeks before Monday’s rebound and were still slightly negative for October, according to Farside.

The sequence also illustrates why daily flow data can produce dramatic headlines without necessarily settling a longer-term trend. A $526.7 million net inflow is substantial, particularly after the Oct. 7 withdrawal wave, but it was produced by one fund’s $665.2 million intake while two other major products saw redemptions.

For Bitcoin, the immediate question is whether IBIT’s allocation is followed by renewed inflows across several issuers and over multiple sessions. For Ether, the more pressing issue is whether the third straight week of withdrawals develops into a longer period of persistent redemptions. Monday’s figures provided a strong rebound for Bitcoin ETFs, while leaving the two leading US crypto fund categories on markedly different short-term paths.
