Uniswap Labs releases TJAR for fee conversions

2026-10-29 14:45

Uniswap Labs has opened its Token Jar fee-conversion system to outside developers through TJAR, an open-source tool designed to let applications consolidate revenue collected in many crypto assets and receive payment in a chosen token. Robinhood is the first company to integrate the system, using it to convert fees collected through the Uniswap API into USDC and USDG across the chains it supports.

The release targets a practical operational problem for on-chain applications: fees often arrive in a mix of tokens, on several networks, leaving teams to build their own systems for managing and converting small, fragmented balances. TJAR packages Uniswap Labs internal approach into software that other apps can deploy, potentially reducing the engineering work needed to turn varied fee revenue into a consistent treasury asset.

Uniswap Labs said its original Token Jar system processed more than $15.3 million in conversions during September. The company initially developed the mechanism for Uniswap protocol fee flows, where the resulting payments are made in UNI and routed to a burn address.

A market-based route for converting protocol fees

TJAR does not automatically swap a jars assets through an automated market maker or set an exchange rate itself. Instead, an application places collected fee tokens into a Token Jar, specifies the token it wants to receive and sets the required amount.

A third party, known in the system as a searcher, can then decide whether the contents of the jar are worth more than the requested payment. If so, the searcher pays the specified amount through a smart contract called the Releaser and receives the assets held in the jar, according to Uniswap Labs developer documentation.

That arrangement gives searchers discretion over whether to execute a conversion. The app receives its selected payment only when a searcher is willing to meet its terms, while the searcher takes ownership of the deposited token basket. Payment is sent to the destination selected by the application.

The model places price discovery outside the Token Jar contract. Rather than relying on an embedded pricing mechanism, the system depends on searchers assessing the market value, liquidity and transaction costs associated with the assets in each jar. A searcher that cannot profitably sell or use the assets has little reason to complete the transaction.

For application developers, this can simplify fee handling without requiring the application itself to execute a sequence of swaps across decentralized exchanges. It also separates the applications goal receiving a predetermined token and amount from the searchers decision about how to value and manage the tokens being released.

Robinhood receives USDC and USDG

Robinhood has put TJAR into use for fees generated through the Uniswap API, according to Uniswap Labs. The company said the integration converts those fees as they are received, with proceeds delivered to Robinhood in USDC and USDG.

The use of two dollar-pegged assets gives Robinhood a standardized form of on-chain fee revenue even where users activity generates fees in different tokens. The arrangement could be particularly useful for an application operating across several supported chains, where collecting and reconciling token balances separately would add operational overhead.

Uniswap Labs has also expanded its relationship with Robinhood beyond the new fee tool. Uniswap trading protocols are live on Robinhood Chain, while Uniswaps web application, wallet and API support Robinhood Stock Tokens, according to the company.

TJARs first deployment by a large consumer-facing platform gives the tool an immediate production use case, rather than positioning it solely as infrastructure for experimental protocols. The extent of its adoption will depend on whether developers find that searchers consistently provide competitive conversion terms for the token combinations their applications collect.

Settings can be changed or locked

Uniswap Labs said a Token Jar can be created in one transaction. Developers can later modify its settings or permanently lock them, depending on how much flexibility or predictability they want in the fee-conversion process.

The software also includes an optional protocol fee. That fee would be set through Uniswap DAO governance, though Uniswap Labs said no TJAR protocol fee is currently configured.

The governance option introduces a potential revenue layer for the system if usage grows, but its absence at launch leaves applications and searchers focused on the direct economics of each conversion. Searchers must determine whether the assets inside a jar justify the payment requested by its creator, plus any gas costs and the risks involved in handling less-liquid tokens.

Uniswaps own implementation has a narrower destination: protocol fee assets are converted into UNI and sent to a burn address, removing those tokens from circulation. External applications using TJAR are not required to follow that design. They can select their preferred output asset and designate their own payment recipient.

Seven-chain deployment expands access

TJAR is live on seven chains, Uniswap Labs said. The company has published the tools source code, deployment addresses and audit reports, giving developers the materials needed to review the contracts or integrate them into their own systems.

Open-sourcing the code shifts Token Jar from a Uniswap-specific fee mechanism into reusable infrastructure for wallets, brokers, trading interfaces and other applications that generate on-chain revenue in many assets. Its design is especially suited to services that want to avoid holding a long tail of small token balances while retaining control over the asset they ultimately receive.

The system does not eliminate market risk from fee conversion. Searchers will evaluate each jar according to the assets available and the amount demanded, meaning conversion speed and execution are likely to vary with token liquidity and prevailing network costs. Yet by turning that process into a standardized contract flow, TJAR gives developers an alternative to maintaining custom fee-consolidation systems across multiple chains.
