UNICEF and Bitget launch blockchain literacy module

2026-09-09 14:02

UNICEF and Bitget have added blockchain education to a free online financial literacy course for young people, placing the technology alongside lessons on budgeting, borrowing, interest rates and scam awareness. The module, released on Sept. 8 through UNICEF’s Agora learning platform, is part of the Game Changers Coalition curriculum and is designed for self-paced study.

Called “Introduction to financial literacy,” the course gives learners a basic grounding in how money decisions work before introducing blockchain concepts. UNICEF Luxembourg and Bitget said the material is intended to make financial education more accessible to young people, particularly in emerging economies where the coalition already operates.

The course is available free of charge through Agora and combines short videos, visual learning materials and quizzes. Participants who complete the module receive a certificate, giving schools, teachers and youth organizations a structured resource that can be used without paid software or a crypto account.

Rather than treating blockchain as a standalone technical subject, the curriculum places it within everyday financial choices. That approach connects the technology to familiar subjects such as earning money, planning expenses, understanding credit and recognizing risks, rather than presenting it primarily through trading or token speculation.

A game turns financial choices into immediate outcomes

The module includes “Neon Paycheck,” a short online game set in a futuristic city. Players make decisions involving income, spending, saving and fraud risks, then see the consequences within the game.

The format is built around practical scenarios: how to allocate a paycheck, when to plan ahead, and how poor decisions or scams can affect a person’s finances. Financial education programs often struggle to hold the attention of younger audiences when they rely on definitions and worksheets alone; the game gives the course an interactive layer without requiring participants to use real money.

UNICEF and Bitget did not present the game as a trading simulation. Its focus is on daily money management and risk awareness, which places blockchain lessons within a wider foundation of financial literacy.

The course also covers supply and demand, a core economic concept that can help learners understand why prices move. It then progresses through credit, loans and interest rates before reaching blockchain fundamentals. That sequencing could help prevent blockchain from being taught as an isolated digital trend disconnected from the costs and trade-offs involved in ordinary financial decisions.

Bitget provides blockchain material

Bitget contributed the blockchain chapters, according to the organizations. Gracy Chen, chief executive officer of Bitget, appears in the learning material to guide participants through blockchain concepts. Bitget describes Chen as an adjunct professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.

The project follows a 2025 partnership between Bitget and UNICEF Luxembourg supporting the Game Changers Coalition. The coalition develops digital and technology skills courses for young people, with existing content covering artificial intelligence and video game development as well as financial literacy.

UNICEF Luxembourg said the coalition has reached more than 642,000 young people, parents and teachers across eight countries: Armenia, Brazil, Cambodia, India, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Morocco and South Africa. Bolivia, Bangladesh and Indonesia are planned as expansion markets in 2026.

Those countries span regions with sharply different levels of digital access, financial infrastructure and cryptocurrency use. A common course delivered online gives the coalition a way to distribute core material across that range, while teachers and local education partners can put the lessons into their own national context.

Education program keeps distance from commercial promotion

UNICEF said it works in more than 190 countries and territories. The organization also states that it does not endorse any company, brand, product or service through its partnerships.

That disclaimer is particularly relevant for a curriculum involving a cryptocurrency company. The available course description frames the project as educational content rather than a pathway into a specific platform, asset or financial product. The emphasis on budgeting, credit, loans, interest and scams also gives the module a broader consumer-education purpose.

For younger learners, the distinction between understanding a technology and being encouraged to use a financial product is central. Blockchain lessons can explain how records are shared and validated across a network, while financial literacy can address the personal decisions and risks that surround money in any form.

The Game Changers Coalition’s model also reflects the growing use of online learning platforms for skills that sit between technology and day-to-day life. Artificial intelligence, game development and blockchain can all appear abstract to students without practical examples. Adding them to courses built around decisions, projects and interactive exercises may make the subjects easier to approach.
