Tether backs Kem expansion across the GCC

2026-10-21 05:27

Kem, a Kuwait-headquartered fintech building payment and digital-asset services for the Gulf Cooperation Council, is turning a $3 million seed investment led by Tether into a consumer-and-business platform aimed at one of the world’s largest remittance corridors. The company combines USDT payments, Tether Gold exposure, cards, payroll tools and merchant services in a region where expatriate workers routinely need to receive salaries, exchange currencies and send money abroad.

Tether led Kem’s seed round in August 2024, providing backing for a company founded only three years earlier by four founders born in the 2000s. Kem began as a domestic transfer application before expanding its scope to cover consumer finance products and business payment tools across the GCC.

The company’s strategy places stablecoins alongside familiar financial services rather than treating cryptocurrency as a standalone trading product. Its consumer application offers fiat-to-crypto and crypto-to-fiat conversion, swaps involving assets including USDT, savings features and spending through a Visa card. Users can also allocate funds to Tether Gold, or XAUT, a gold-backed token issued by Tether.

Kem told users and partners that it had surpassed 600,000 downloads across platforms and created more than 200,000 XAUT wallets. If sustained, that wallet base would make Kem a meaningful retail distribution channel for Tether Gold, particularly in a region where physical gold has long held cultural and financial appeal.

A payments product built around expatriate demand

Kem’s addressable market is shaped by the GCC’s unusually mobile workforce. Kuwait’s expatriate population accounts for close to 70% of residents, while the region hosts large communities from India, Pakistan, the Philippines and other Asian countries. These workers often manage several recurring financial tasks across borders: receiving salaries in local currency, supporting families overseas, saving money and paying daily expenses.

Kem cited 2025 Gulf worker remittances of about $161 billion, illustrating the scale of money moving out of the region. The company’s model seeks to capture portions of those flows by connecting cards, transfers, stablecoin conversion and merchant payments within one application.

That approach could appeal to users who currently move between payroll accounts, currency-exchange outlets, remittance providers and separate crypto platforms. A single interface does not automatically lower cross-border costs, which depend on local payment rails, foreign-exchange pricing and compliance requirements. It could, though, reduce friction for users who already want to hold or transfer value through USDT or move between tokenized assets and local currency.

Kem has also added consumer services that broaden the app beyond core payments, including eSIM purchases and airport lounge access. Such features are common in finance “super apps,” where engagement often depends on giving cardholders reasons to keep opening the application after completing a transfer.

Merchant tools extend Kem beyond card spending

The business side of the platform may be more consequential for Kem’s revenue model than consumer card use alone. Kem Business allows merchants to accept USDT through checkout pages, payment links and application programming interfaces, or APIs. It also offers payroll functions, refunds, VAT and invoice management, reconciliation tools and fund analytics.

Merchant acquiring would give Kem a direct role in commerce rather than merely helping individuals move funds. Payment links and APIs could also allow online sellers and service businesses to integrate USDT payments without building their own digital-asset infrastructure.

The practical challenge is whether merchants find stablecoin acceptance useful enough to justify another payment method. Businesses generally need reliable conversion options, clear transaction records, refund procedures and controls against illicit activity before adding digital assets to their checkout systems. Kem’s business tools are designed around those operational requirements, including invoicing and reconciliation that can fit more easily into existing accounting processes.

Kem said it has connected with Rain, Interlace, Fireblocks, Persona, Chainalysis and Visa. The integrations cover functions including payment access, card infrastructure, custody, identity verification and blockchain transaction monitoring. That mix reflects the compliance and operational stack required to offer consumer-facing crypto payments in regulated Gulf markets.

Bahrain licensing provides a route into regulated services

Kem has pursued regulatory approvals in Bahrain, one of the region’s more established jurisdictions for digital-asset firms. The company received in-principle approvals in February from the Central Bank of Bahrain for a Category 2 crypto-asset service provider, or CASP, licence and an SIO approval, according to information provided by Kem.

An in-principle approval is an early regulatory step rather than a final operating licence. It nevertheless gives Kem a framework for building services under the central bank’s supervision as it seeks to expand beyond its Kuwait base.

The company was also listed among CNBC’s Top 500 fintech companies in 2026, adding visibility as it competes for users in a crowded payments market. Crypto-linked card providers have increasingly focused on the same audience of internationally mobile consumers. RedotPay has said it serves more than 8.5 million users in over 100 countries, while KAST and other digital-asset fintechs have been expanding their card and payment offerings. Consumer finance firm Revolut has separately moved further into Middle East markets.

Kem’s narrower GCC focus gives it a different starting point from global card platforms. Its product roadmap is tied to regional payroll needs, merchant payments, cross-border transfers and enterprise APIs, rather than relying solely on crypto card spending.

XAUT distribution adds a savings angle

Kem’s reported 200,000 XAUT wallets also point to a second use case: tokenized gold as a retail savings product. XAUT is designed to represent ownership interests in physical gold held by Tether, allowing users to obtain gold exposure without arranging personal storage or purchasing small bars and coins.

For Kem, offering XAUT alongside USDT creates a division between transactional balances and longer-term holdings within the same application. USDT can serve as a dollar-linked settlement asset for transfers and payments, while tokenized gold may appeal to users seeking an asset linked to bullion prices.

The model will depend on execution across several fronts: obtaining final regulatory permissions, converting downloads into active users, building merchant acceptance and keeping fiat on- and off-ramps dependable. Kem’s early funding and Bahrain approvals give it infrastructure to pursue that plan, while the GCC’s large remittance flows provide a clear commercial target.
