Super Micro Computer raises revenue and margin forecast

2026-10-21 10:27

Super Micro Computer raised its fiscal 2027 first-quarter revenue outlook by roughly 27% at the midpoint and increased its gross margin forecast, signaling a stronger-than-expected quarter for the AI server maker as customers deploy large-scale computing systems.

The company said on Oct. 20 that it now expects revenue of $18.5 billion to $19.5 billion for the quarter ended Sept. 30, 2026. Its previous guidance called for $14.5 billion to $15.5 billion. Super Micro also lifted its expected gross margin to 12.0% to 12.5%, compared with its earlier forecast of 10.4% to 10.8%.

Shares of Super Micro Computer, which trades under the ticker SMCI, climbed 15.54% to $37.52 in after-hours trading as of 19:59 Eastern. The stock had ended the regular session at $32.47, up 1.15% for the day.

The preliminary figures place the company among the most closely watched suppliers serving the AI infrastructure buildout. Super Micro sells high-performance servers, storage hardware, networking equipment, and integrated rack-scale systems used in data centers, including systems designed for intensive AI workloads.

Revenue outlook rises by $4 billion at the midpoint

Using the midpoints of Super Micro’s guidance ranges, the updated forecast implies quarterly revenue of $19 billion, up from $15 billion under its earlier outlook. That is a $4 billion increase in expected sales within a single quarter.

The margin revision is also substantial. The midpoint of the company’s new gross margin range is 12.25%, compared with 10.6% previously, a gain of 1.65 percentage points. Gross margin measures the share of revenue remaining after the direct costs of producing and delivering products, before operating expenses, interest, and taxes.

Applied mechanically, the revised midpoint assumptions would produce about $2.33 billion in gross profit, compared with roughly $1.59 billion under the previous guidance midpoint. Those calculations are based only on management’s preliminary revenue and margin ranges; they do not represent reported earnings or net income.

Super Micro has scheduled its full fiscal first-quarter results for Nov. 3. That report should show whether the stronger revenue outlook translated into comparable gains in operating profit and cash generation, or whether higher sales required a greater buildup of inventory and receivables.

System mix will shape the margin result

AI server revenue can rise sharply when customers order systems containing advanced processors, high-bandwidth memory, networking equipment, storage, and specialized cooling components. Such systems carry high selling prices, but they also include substantial component costs.

The improvement in Super Micro’s gross margin outlook suggests the company expects a more favorable mix of products or services than it had projected earlier. That could include a greater contribution from complete rack-scale deployments, integration work, liquid-cooling configurations, testing, installation support, or other services attached to server deliveries.

Direct liquid cooling has become increasingly relevant for data-center operators running dense AI computing clusters. The technology circulates coolant close to heat-generating processors and other components, helping operators manage the power and heat demands of high-performance systems that can exceed the limits of conventional air cooling.

For Super Micro, integrated systems can provide a larger share of revenue per deployment than standalone servers. They can also add operational complexity, since the company must coordinate the delivery and assembly of processors, memory, power systems, networking gear, racks, cooling equipment, and customer-specific configurations.

The Nov. 3 release will offer a clearer view of whether the revised gross margin reflects a temporary delivery mix, improved execution, changes in component costs, or a combination of those factors.

Cash flow and delivery timing remain central questions

The preliminary update addresses revenue and gross margin, but it does not provide figures for operating income, net income, operating cash flow, inventory, or accounts receivable. Those measures will be particularly relevant given the size of the revised sales forecast.

Hardware makers often need to purchase components and build systems before collecting payment from customers. A rapid increase in revenue can therefore consume cash if inventory rises or if customers take longer to pay after systems are shipped and accepted.

Large deployments can also move between quarters depending on installation schedules, customer testing, final acceptance terms, and the availability of supporting infrastructure such as power capacity and cooling equipment. A quarter with unusually large deliveries may not, by itself, establish a steady long-term run rate.

Super Micro’s earnings materials may also provide further information on order backlog, the pace of customer deployments, and the degree to which revenue depends on a limited group of major customers. Those details would help determine whether the higher outlook reflects broad demand across its customer base or a smaller number of exceptionally large projects.

AI infrastructure demand reaches beyond chip suppliers

The update adds evidence that spending on AI computing infrastructure is extending through the hardware supply chain rather than remaining concentrated only among semiconductor designers. Server assemblers and system integrators sit between component suppliers and cloud providers, enterprises, research institutions, and other customers operating AI workloads.

That position can create significant revenue opportunities when demand accelerates, while also exposing companies to component availability, pricing shifts, delivery constraints, and execution risks. The large gap between Super Micro’s previous and revised revenue outlook illustrates how quickly expected shipment volumes can change in this segment.

For markets that track AI-linked assets, Super Micro’s update provides a fresh data point on physical infrastructure spending rather than a direct measure of demand for digital tokens. The more immediate test arrives Nov. 3, when the company is expected to disclose the profitability, working-capital effects, and delivery details behind its sharply increased first-quarter forecast.
