SpaceX joins Nasdaq 100 as S&P 500 waits

2026-08-31 08:40

SpaceX joined the Nasdaq-100 on July 7 under Nasdaq’s revised 15-trading-day fast-track rule, while S&P Dow Jones Indices declined to create a comparable path into the S&P 500 following a public consultation. The split leaves SpaceX eligible for rapid entry into one major U.S. benchmark but potentially unable to enter the S&P 500 before 2027 if it does not meet that index’s established profitability test.

The S&P 500 requires companies to report positive GAAP net income in the most recent quarter and, in aggregate, across the previous four consecutive quarters. GAAP, or Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, is the standard U.S. accounting framework used in company financial statements. A large valuation, high public profile, or strong trading interest does not replace that earnings requirement.

Nasdaq’s decision and the S&P committee’s refusal underline a practical distinction often obscured by market commentary: major equity indexes do not operate under a common eligibility system. Their constituent lists are produced through separate rulebooks, oversight committees, rebalancing calendars, and screening criteria.

Profitability remains a barrier to S&P 500 entry

The S&P 500’s earnings screen can be particularly consequential for companies whose reported results are affected by large unrealized gains or losses, stock-based compensation, acquisition accounting, or volatile asset holdings. A company may have substantial revenue, liquidity, and market capitalization yet remain outside the index if its GAAP earnings do not meet the test.

That framework shaped recent decisions involving crypto-linked public companies. S&P Dow Jones Indices announced on May 12, 2025, that Coinbase would enter the S&P 500 effective May 19. Coinbase had reported $65.6 million in net income for the first quarter of 2025, alongside 24% year-over-year revenue growth.

MicroStrategy, now operating as Strategy, was not added during the same period after reporting a $4.2 billion GAAP net loss in the first quarter of 2025. The outcome tracked the index’s profitability rules rather than whether either company was associated with Bitcoin or digital assets.

For SpaceX, the absence of an S&P fast track means the company would need to clear the existing financial test through reported results over time. Nasdaq’s shorter route into the Nasdaq-100 does not alter the S&P 500’s criteria, which are applied by the S&P Index Committee during its regular review process.

How index rulebooks produce different outcomes

Published index methodologies generally address four operational areas: construction, weighting, calculation, and review. Each can change which companies enter an index and how strongly those companies affect its performance.

Construction covers the basic membership rules. These may include market capitalization, country of incorporation, listing venue, share class, liquidity, public float, trading currency, and financial performance. The S&P 500’s GAAP profitability requirement belongs in this part of its methodology.

Weighting determines the influence each constituent has on daily index movement. The S&P 500 uses float-adjusted market-capitalization weighting, meaning companies with larger values of publicly tradable shares generally carry greater influence. Shares held by insiders, governments, or strategic owners are typically excluded from the float calculation.

Other benchmarks use sharply different approaches. The S&P 500 Equal Weight Index gives each constituent the same starting weight and periodically rebalances the portfolio. The Dow Jones Industrial Average remains price-weighted, so a stock with a higher per-share price has more influence than a lower-priced stock, even if the lower-priced company is much larger by market value.

Index calculation relies on a divisor, which converts the aggregate value of constituent shares into an index level. Divisors are adjusted for events such as stock splits, spin-offs, and certain dividend actions, preventing a corporate action from creating an artificial jump or drop in the index.

Rebalancing can move stocks before funds trade

Index reviews determine when rules are applied again. The S&P 500 typically makes scheduled changes effective on the third Friday of March, June, September, and December, although the committee can act outside those dates under certain circumstances.

An inclusion announcement can generate substantial short-term trading activity before the effective date. When S&P Dow Jones Indices said on Aug. 14, 2026, that Reddit would join the S&P 500 before the open on Aug. 18, Reddit shares rose as much as 15% in after-hours trading.

That reaction cannot be attributed solely to passive index funds. At the time of the announcement, roughly 13% of Reddit’s free float was sold short. Traders closing bearish positions can create rapid buying pressure, particularly when other market participants are also seeking shares ahead of the rebalance.

Passive funds tracking the S&P 500 generally need to own new constituents by the effective date, often concentrating trading near the closing auction immediately before the change takes effect. Active managers may buy earlier in anticipation of that demand, which can shift part of the price move to the announcement period.

Research from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York examining S&P 500 additions between 1989 and 2009 found that many companies already displayed stronger momentum before entering the index. The study concluded that post-inclusion gains often aligned with those earlier trends rather than arising entirely from index membership.

That pattern offers a more measured way to view high-profile additions. Index inclusion can change the shareholder base and create predictable fund flows, but earnings results, short interest, prior momentum, and early positioning often shape the immediate market reaction as much as the mechanical buying tied to the benchmark.
