Centrifuge has launched an onchain version of Schroders emerging-market bond strategy on Solana, bringing an actively managed debt fund from an asset manager overseeing more than $1 trillion onto the high-speed public blockchain for the first time.
The product, the Schroder International Selection Fund Emerging Market Bond, gives eligible onchain participants exposure to a strategy that invests across sovereign debt, corporate bonds and local-currency instruments in developing economies. Centrifuge is distributing the vehicle through its tokenized-fund infrastructure, while Schroders manages the underlying portfolio.
The launch pushes tokenized real-world assets further beyond the cash-management products that have dominated the sector so far. Much of the onchain fund market has centered on tokenized U.S. Treasury bills, money-market vehicles and other short-duration instruments designed to provide relatively stable yields. Emerging-market debt introduces a more complex mix of credit, currency, duration and geopolitical risks.
For Schroders, the Solana deployment is its first on that network, according to Centrifuge. For Centrifuge, it adds a large global asset manager and an actively managed international bond strategy to a roster that has recently included credit and fixed-income products.
Active management moves onchain
The Schroder fund is structured around active security selection rather than a passive index-tracking approach. Its mandate covers government borrowers, companies and debt issued in local currencies, creating exposure that can vary significantly by country, interest-rate cycle and foreign-exchange market.
That differs sharply from a tokenized Treasury fund, where users are generally seeking short-term dollar yields with limited price volatility. Emerging-market bonds can offer higher yields, but those returns can be affected by declining local currencies, changing central-bank policy, political instability or deteriorating public finances.
Putting such a strategy onchain does not remove those underlying portfolio risks. It changes the fund's distribution and record-keeping layer, allowing ownership interests to be represented as tokens and potentially enabling subscriptions, redemptions and transfers to use blockchain-based infrastructure.
Centrifuge said the arrangement uses onchain feeder pools, a structure that can combine capital from multiple participants before allocating it to the underlying fund. Such pools can make institutional fund strategies accessible in smaller denominations than direct participation might otherwise allow, though the available minimums, eligibility rules and redemption terms depend on the legal structure of each offering.
Solana becomes a venue for tokenized funds
Solana has become the first network used by Schroders for an onchain fund deployment, extending a tokenization effort that has largely developed across Ethereum-compatible networks and private institutional systems.
The network's lower transaction costs and high throughput could make it suitable for fund administration activities that may involve frequent balance updates or a large number of smaller tokenholders. Yet a fast blockchain does not necessarily mean instant liquidity for an underlying bond fund.
Fund tokens can settle quickly at the blockchain level, while subscriptions and redemptions may remain governed by the dealing schedule of the underlying vehicle. Emerging-market bonds themselves can also be less liquid during periods of market stress, particularly when local currencies or sovereign-credit concerns trigger rapid repricing.
Participants therefore need to distinguish between the ability to move a token and the ability to exit exposure to the underlying portfolio at a desired price. The fund's offering documents, transfer restrictions, redemption windows and valuation procedures will determine how that process works in practice.
Centrifuge builds on recent credit launches
The Schroders product follows other fund tokenization initiatives involving Centrifuge. New York Life Investment Management has worked with the platform on a tokenized high-yield corporate bond fund, bringing another actively managed credit strategy into an onchain format.
Coinbase has also collaborated with Centrifuge on tokenization efforts involving ETFs, credit funds and structured products on Base, an Ethereum layer-2 network developed by Coinbase. Together, those projects show tokenization providers moving beyond simple government-debt products and toward vehicles that carry more varied market and liquidity characteristics.
That expansion brings operational benefits but also demands more care from users. Tokenized fund units may be available through a wallet interface, yet they remain interests in regulated financial products with their own eligibility requirements, fees, tax treatment and settlement procedures.
A wallet connection alone may not be enough to access a fund. Depending on the jurisdiction and product structure, users could need identity checks, accreditation or professional-client status, and approval before subscribing.
Yield comparisons require more than a headline rate
The arrival of tokenized emerging-market debt also gives onchain users a new yield source to compare with staking rewards and stablecoin-based lending products. Those comparisons need to account for more than the advertised or recent yield.
Staking returns are generally tied to blockchain validation economics, while bond-fund returns depend on interest income, changes in bond prices, credit conditions, fund expenses and currency movements. A local-currency emerging-market bond may generate a high coupon but deliver weaker results to dollar-based holders if the issuing country's currency falls.
Short-term interest-rate movements can also affect bond prices. If rates rise, existing bonds with lower coupons may lose value; longer-dated holdings are generally more sensitive to those moves. An actively managed fund can adjust positioning, but it cannot eliminate market risk.
Centrifuge's latest launch places those familiar fund-market mechanics into an onchain setting. The practical test will be whether the structure can give eligible participants efficient access to sophisticated debt strategies while preserving the protections, liquidity rules and disclosures required for a fund holding assets across emerging markets.
