Samsung Wallet adds USDC on Solana accounts

2026-11-05 15:05

Samsung Wallet has introduced a Stablecoin Account feature for eligible Galaxy users in the United States, allowing them to buy, hold, send, and receive Circle's USDC on the Solana blockchain without downloading a separate cryptocurrency app or managing private keys.

The feature potentially places a custodial stablecoin service inside an app already used for payments, digital IDs, and loyalty cards on compatible Samsung phones. Samsung said roughly 82 million Galaxy devices in the U.S. can support the service, subject to account and software requirements.

The launch arrived later than Samsung's initial timetable. In an Oct. 7 announcement, the company said the Stablecoin Account feature was expected during the final week of October. Samsung confirmed the U.S. availability in a Thursday statement but did not provide a country-by-country expansion schedule.

Users must be at least 18, hold a Samsung Account, and use a compatible Galaxy device running Android 13 or later. The service is unavailable to New York residents, reflecting the state's separate licensing framework for virtual-currency businesses.

Usdc accounts use Bastion custody and Coinbase vault services

Samsung has not made the Stablecoin Account a self-custody wallet. Bastion, a licensed stablecoin custodian and infrastructure provider, handles the accounts and transfer system, while Coinbase acts as sub-custodian for USDC through Coinbase Prime Vault.

That structure removes one of the most difficult parts of conventional crypto-wallet use: safeguarding a private key or recovery phrase. In a self-custody arrangement, losing those credentials can permanently block access to funds. Samsung Wallet users instead access their balance through their Samsung Account and the service's custodial providers.

The trade-off is that customers rely on the account rules, operational security, and availability of Samsung and its partners rather than controlling the USDC directly through their own wallet credentials. That approach resembles the account-based design used by payment applications and fintech platforms, and could make stablecoin transfers more familiar to consumers who would not otherwise set up a crypto wallet.

Samsung said USDC can be sent to another Samsung Wallet user or to a compatible external crypto wallet without a Samsung transfer fee. Network costs or fees imposed by third-party services may still apply, depending on the destination and transaction route.

The app also supports transfers to qualifying bank accounts in more than 60 countries. Recipients can receive local currency rather than USDC, Samsung said, with the fee varying by destination. That gives the product a remittance use case alongside wallet-to-wallet transfers, though Samsung did not disclose transfer limits, foreign-exchange spreads, or the full list of supported bank corridors in its statement.

Solana gives the feature a low-cost settlement network

The service runs on Solana, a blockchain frequently used for stablecoin transfers because of its low transaction costs and rapid transaction processing. USDC exists on several networks, including Ethereum, but Samsung's initial Stablecoin Account implementation is limited to the Solana version of the token.

DefiLlama data showed stablecoin supply on Solana reached a record $17.3 billion in late September 2026, placing the network among the largest blockchains for stablecoin balances. Across all chains, the tracker put total stablecoin supply at about $314 billion in November.

Those balances do not directly indicate retail payment usage. Stablecoins also move between trading venues, decentralized-finance protocols, market makers, and treasury accounts. Samsung's rollout could nevertheless create a clearer test of whether a major phone manufacturer can turn an existing device wallet into a channel for everyday stablecoin transfers and international payouts.

The initial feature does not yet enable USDC payments at stores or online merchants. Samsung said it plans to explore both in-store and online stablecoin payments, as well as expansion to other markets, subject to local regulations. Merchant acceptance, consumer protections, and the ability to convert USDC smoothly into local currency would determine whether the account develops beyond transfers and remittances.

Samsung expands its Coinbase relationship

The Stablecoin Account follows an expansion of Samsung's relationship with Coinbase in October 2025. That arrangement enabled U.S. Galaxy users to fund Coinbase accounts with Samsung Pay, connecting Samsung's mobile payment platform with a cryptocurrency trading account.

The new product takes a different route. Rather than directing users to an exchange account for crypto purchases and trading, Samsung Wallet presents USDC as a balance that can be held and transferred within the wallet application. Coinbase remains involved in custody infrastructure, but the user experience is designed around Samsung's own app.

Samsung's choice of USDC also avoids the price volatility associated with assets such as Bitcoin or Solana's SOL token. USDC is designed to maintain a one-to-one value with the U.S. dollar, making it more suited to payments and transfers than to directional cryptocurrency trading. Circle, the issuer of USDC, says the token is backed by reserves including cash and short-duration U.S. government securities.

USDC was up 0.05% in the market data cited alongside Samsung's announcement, while SOL rose 2.82%. Neither move establishes a direct market response to the product launch, particularly given the limited role of Samsung Wallet in Solana's overall transaction activity at this stage.

Samsung's next practical challenge will be making the service useful enough for users who already have familiar bank-payment options. Fee transparency for international transfers, the availability of bank payout destinations, and eventual merchant support will be more consequential than the ability to display a USDC balance on a phone.
