Ripple Prime has introduced real-world asset perpetual swaps for institutional clients, giving them round-the-clock exposure to more than 100 markets linked to equities, indices, exchange-traded funds, commodities and foreign exchange through contracts referencing Trade.xyz perpetual futures on Hyperliquid.
The new offering places Ripple’s institutional brokerage operation between traditional-market reference assets and an on-chain derivatives venue that operates continuously. Clients can trade and settle the swaps 24 hours a day, including weekends, using Ripple Prime’s account and margin infrastructure rather than accessing Hyperliquid directly.
Ripple Prime acts as principal in the transactions, meaning it takes the other side of client trades. The value of each swap is tied to perpetual futures markets listed by Trade.xyz on Hyperliquid, a decentralized derivatives platform. The contracts provide price exposure rather than ownership of the underlying shares, funds, metals or currencies.
Market maker Virtu is among the institutional clients already using the product, Ripple said.
Contracts extend traditional-market exposure beyond exchange hours
Perpetual swaps are derivatives without a fixed expiry date. In this case, they allow eligible institutions to take leveraged long or short positions on reference markets that include equities, equity indices, ETFs, metals, energy products and foreign exchange pairs.
The structure could allow clients to adjust derivatives exposure outside the trading hours of the traditional venues associated with the underlying assets. A participant holding a position linked to an equity index, for example, could trade its perpetual swap over the weekend even though the relevant cash equity market is closed.
That availability does not turn the products into direct trading of listed stocks or physical commodities. The contracts follow the prices of Trade.xyz perpetual futures, with Ripple Prime providing the bilateral trading relationship and settlement framework for its clients.
Weekend trading can also carry different risks from activity during regular market hours. Traditional reference markets may reopen after a break with prices that differ sharply from those implied by perpetual markets, particularly after major political, economic or geopolitical developments. Liquidity and pricing conditions can vary substantially when the underlying cash market is closed.
RLUSD can be used as collateral
Ripple said clients in eligible jurisdictions can post RLUSD, the company’s U.S. dollar stablecoin, as collateral for the RWA perpetual swaps. The arrangement gives Ripple a use case for RLUSD within its own institutional trading infrastructure, alongside its role as a settlement-focused digital dollar.
The platform also supports cross-margining across asset classes. Under that system, offsetting positions may reduce the total amount of collateral a client needs to post. A client with positions that partially counterbalance each other across foreign exchange, digital assets or derivatives could manage them within a unified margin framework instead of funding each trade independently.
Cross-margining can make capital use more efficient, but it also connects risk across positions. Losses in one market may affect collateral available for another, making risk controls and position monitoring central to the service.
Ripple said RLUSD availability depends on jurisdiction. The RWA swaps are currently offered through Ripple Prime’s CIV BVI license, with the company planning to expand access to additional regions. It did not identify the next markets or provide a timetable.
Hyperliquid access follows Hidden Road acquisition
The product expands the institutional platform Ripple built after acquiring non-bank prime broker Hidden Road for $1.25 billion. Ripple completed the deal last year and subsequently rebranded the business as Ripple Prime.
Prime brokerage services generally consolidate execution, financing, custody and risk management for professional trading firms. Ripple Prime now offers access across digital assets, foreign exchange, fixed income, derivatives and swaps through a single institutional account, according to Ripple.
In February, Ripple Prime added support for Hyperliquid, allowing its clients to access the decentralized derivatives platform while managing margin alongside other positions. The RWA perpetual swaps build on that connection by bringing Trade.xyz-linked markets into the brokerage’s product range.
The arrangement gives institutional clients a route to decentralized-market liquidity without requiring them to organize all operational functions around an on-chain venue themselves. Ripple Prime’s role as principal also means clients face the brokerage rather than relying solely on a peer-to-peer order-book interaction.
A growing contest for on-chain derivatives flows
The launch reflects growing competition to package blockchain-based derivatives infrastructure for institutions that want continuous trading but still require familiar account, collateral and risk-management tools.
Hyperliquid has become a prominent venue for perpetual futures, a product category that has historically been concentrated in crypto markets. Linking perpetual contracts to traditional-asset references extends that model toward instruments more commonly associated with brokerages, futures exchanges and over-the-counter derivatives desks.
For Ripple, the offering also broadens the commercial purpose of its prime brokerage operation beyond digital-asset execution. The combination of RWA-linked swaps, cross-margining and RLUSD collateral connects the company’s stablecoin business with a trading platform designed for institutions active in several asset classes.
The practical appeal will depend on the depth of liquidity in the referenced perpetual markets, the quality of price tracking during periods when traditional markets are closed, and the jurisdictions in which Ripple can offer the product. For eligible clients, the immediate change is a new way to hold or hedge synthetic exposure to a wide range of traditional markets through a continuously operating derivatives framework.
