Ripple partners with Jeonbuk Bank for remittances

2026-08-18 06:25

Ripple has agreed to provide its Ripple Payments platform to South Korea’s Jeonbuk Bank for round-the-clock cross-border remittances, marking the first deployment of the service by a Korean regional bank, the companies said in a joint statement released Tuesday.

Jeonbuk Bank plans to use the platform for customers including import-export businesses, IT startups and online content creators. Ripple said the system is designed to settle transfers in seconds to minutes, a timetable the company contrasts with conventional international bank transfers routed through SWIFT, which can take several days depending on the currencies, banks and compliance checks involved.

The agreement gives Jeonbuk Bank a payments infrastructure aimed at international transfers rather than a cryptocurrency trading service. Ripple Payments connects financial institutions and payment providers through a network intended to simplify cross-border settlement, where transfers can otherwise pass through multiple correspondent banks before reaching a recipient.

Jeonbuk targets commercial and digital-economy clients

The customer groups identified by the companies point to practical payment needs that differ from retail cryptocurrency activity. Importers and exporters often need to pay overseas suppliers or receive proceeds in foreign currencies, while software firms and content creators may earn revenue from platforms, clients or audiences in other countries.

For these users, the appeal of a faster remittance rail would lie in processing time and operational visibility. Delays in international payments can complicate cash-flow management, particularly for smaller companies that lack the treasury resources of major corporations. A system that provides more direct settlement could reduce the period between sending funds and making them available to a recipient, although the companies did not disclose pricing, supported corridors or the currencies included in the initial rollout.

Jeonbuk Bank’s regional-bank status also sets the partnership apart from a deal involving one of South Korea’s largest nationwide lenders. Regional banks have traditionally competed through local business relationships and specialized services. Adding an international payments product could help Jeonbuk Bank offer clients a service usually associated with bigger institutions or dedicated remittance providers.

Ripple and Jeonbuk Bank did not state when the service would become available to all eligible customers. The announcement also did not specify whether transfers will use XRP, stablecoins, tokenized deposits or traditional fiat settlement at the customer-facing level. Ripple Payments can support different settlement configurations, so the underlying asset used in a particular corridor may depend on the institutions and regulatory requirements involved.

Ripple adds a third South Korean partnership in 2026

The Jeonbuk Bank arrangement is Ripple’s third announced South Korean partnership this year. In April, Kyobo Life Insurance said it was working with Ripple to support transactions in tokenized government bonds using Ripple Custody, a product designed for institutions to store and manage digital assets.

Later that month, Kbank announced a proof-of-concept with Ripple focused on onchain cross-border transactions. A proof-of-concept tests whether a technology can work in a defined environment; it does not necessarily mean the service has moved into commercial production.

Taken together, the three agreements cover distinct financial uses: custody for tokenized securities, experimental onchain international transfers and a planned bank remittance service. That range gives Ripple a more varied presence in South Korea than a single partnership centered on payments or trading access.

The Jeonbuk deployment is the clearest of the three announcements in terms of a stated customer use case. Rather than testing a possible model, the companies said the bank will provide remittance services to business and digital-economy clients. The eventual scale of the arrangement will depend on factors that remain undisclosed, including available destination markets, transaction volumes and how quickly the bank integrates the service into its existing channels.

Payments infrastructure faces a different test from tokenization pilots

South Korea has become an active market for digital-asset businesses, but adoption of blockchain-based financial infrastructure follows a different path from demand for crypto trading. A bank remittance product must fit customer onboarding rules, anti-money-laundering controls, foreign-exchange requirements and the operational standards expected of a regulated lender.

Those requirements can slow launches, but they also make bank partnerships more consequential than a standalone technology demonstration. A remittance product must work reliably across payment corridors and must give customers clarity on transfer status, foreign-exchange conversion and recipient delivery.

Ripple’s comparison with SWIFT centers on speed, yet speed is only one part of the commercial case. Banks and their clients also weigh fees, liquidity, compliance processes and whether recipients can access funds through familiar local channels. The Jeonbuk Bank rollout will be judged on those practical measures once it reaches customers.

The announcement comes after a softer period for South Korea’s local crypto market. Upbit and Bithumb reported revenue declines of nearly 50% in the first half of 2026, according to the supplied figures. Those results reflect conditions in exchange-led trading activity, while Jeonbuk’s project is directed toward business payments and financial infrastructure.

XRP fell 0.7% in the 24 hours leading up to 2:10 a.m. Tuesday Eastern Time, according to the supplied market data. The modest move offers little evidence of a direct market response to the Jeonbuk agreement, especially since payment-network integrations often require months of technical and regulatory work before transaction volumes become visible.

For Ripple, the partnership extends its South Korean strategy from custody and pilot projects into a bank-led remittance service with defined commercial users. For Jeonbuk Bank, the next test is whether faster settlement can translate into a remittance product that businesses choose over established international banking routes.
