Payward buys AAVE tokens through secondary market

2026-11-05 15:50

Payward, the parent company of cryptocurrency exchange Kraken, has bought an undisclosed amount of AAVE through secondary-market purchases, giving a fund and affiliated clients exposure to the governance token behind one of decentralized finance's largest lending protocols.

The purchases were made through Digital Asset Special Investments I, LP, according to a Payward statement released Thursday. Payward did not disclose the amount acquired, the timing of the trades, the average purchase price, or the identities of the clients involved. The company said it may make further AAVE purchases.

The transaction places Payward-linked capital directly in Aave's on-chain governance system rather than in Aave Labs, the development company associated with the protocol. AAVE holders can vote on proposals covering protocol parameters, treasury management, product initiatives and other decisions submitted to the Aave DAO, the decentralized autonomous organization that oversees the network.

That distinction has become more relevant following a failed report of a potential corporate transaction earlier this year. In June, Aave founder Stani Kulechov rejected a report claiming that Payward had been in discussions to acquire a 15% stake in Aave at a $385 million valuation. The report characterized that valuation as about 70% below the protocol's estimated value.

Kulechov said at the time that discussions had involved potential partnerships and possible purchases of portions of Aave Labs' AAVE allocation. The latest disclosure instead describes purchases in the secondary market, where existing token holders sell AAVE to buyers.

Secondary-market buying avoids a negotiated protocol deal

A secondary-market acquisition gives buyers governance exposure without requiring a negotiated ownership arrangement with Aave Labs or an agreement with the DAO. It also means the size of Payward-linked voting power will remain unclear unless the relevant wallets are publicly identified, the fund discloses its holdings, or those tokens are used in governance activity.

AAVE governance is not equivalent to equity ownership in Aave Labs. Token holders vote over the DAO's assets and protocol rules, while Aave Labs operates as a separate company that contributes software, services and development work to the ecosystem. The structure has often created a practical divide between the entities building DeFi applications and the token holders who govern the underlying protocol.

The buying could nevertheless give Payward and participating clients a voice in decisions that affect Aave's lending markets, collateral standards and revenue strategy. The degree of influence will depend on the size of the position and whether the tokens are held directly, delegated to another address, or combined with voting support from other holders.

Aave's governance process uses proposals and on-chain votes, with token holders able to delegate voting rights without transferring ownership. Large holders can therefore shape outcomes even when they do not actively submit proposals themselves, particularly in votes with limited turnout.

Treasury policy has raised the value of governance rights

The acquisition comes after Aave governance approved the 'Aave Will Win' framework in April. Under that framework, revenue from Aave-branded products is directed to the DAO treasury.

That policy ties governance more closely to the protocol's commercial activity. A treasury receiving product revenue gives token holders a stronger role in deciding how assets are retained, deployed, spent on development, or potentially used in future token-related initiatives. It does not automatically entitle AAVE holders to a direct share of revenue, but it gives them voting influence over a treasury that could expand alongside Aave's products.

According to DefiLlama data cited in the supplied material, Aave held $15.38 billion in total value locked in early November 2026. Total value locked measures crypto assets deposited into a protocol's smart contracts and is commonly used to gauge the scale of DeFi lending and trading platforms. The figure can change with asset prices and user deposits, so it does not represent company revenue or a conventional corporate valuation.

Aave has remained one of the largest decentralized lending systems, allowing users to supply crypto assets for yield or borrow against posted collateral. Governance decisions can affect which assets are accepted, the amount users may borrow against them, interest-rate models and risk controls designed to protect lenders during sharp market swings.

AAVE purchase lands during a broader market decline

The disclosure arrived during a weak session for major digital assets. Market data included with the original report showed AAVE down 6.91%, while Bitcoin fell 4.97% to $76,352.10 and Ethereum declined 6.22% to $2,271.16. Solana, Chainlink and Pyth also posted losses in the same snapshot.

Short-term price moves do not establish why the purchases were made or whether Payward intends to hold AAVE over a long period. Yet secondary-market buying during a decline can offer an alternative to negotiated transactions, where buyers and sellers must agree on valuation, governance conditions and possible restrictions on token use.

Payward's statement leaves open whether the acquisitions represent a strategic governance position, client-directed exposure, or both. Digital Asset Special Investments I, LP appears to be the vehicle used for the trades, but no public terms were provided on its mandate, ownership structure or allocation policy.

The clearest immediate effect is that a major exchange parent and its affiliated capital now have a disclosed route into Aave governance. Any additional purchases, wallet disclosures or voting activity could show whether the position develops into a more active role in setting the rules for one of DeFi's largest lending treasuries.
