PaperTrade records massive volume with 1000x leverage

2026-10-12 08:24

FuturesOn-chain

PaperTrade, an on-chain perpetual trading project offering leverage of up to 1000x, reported $678 billion in notional volume during its first 24 hours after launch, following $14.4 billion in the opening 10 minutes. Public records cited for the project show a far smaller financial base beneath that activity: $118 million in deposits by October 12 and a $54 million liquidity pool supporting roughly $11 billion in open positions.

The gap between reported trading activity, open exposure and available pool capital places PaperTrade’s risk model under immediate scrutiny. Notional volume measures the total value of positions traded rather than cash committed, so extreme leverage can produce enormous headline figures from comparatively modest deposits. Yet a pool designed to cover winning traders’ payouts can face acute pressure when markets move sharply or prices used by the contracts are disrupted.

Just hours after the launch, one wallet allegedly manipulated an external price feed and withdrew $1.28 million from the system, according to the supplied records. Over the weekend, 30 short positions were liquidated, producing a combined $450,000 in losses within several hours. Those episodes offer an early test of a design that relies on losses from unsuccessful trades to build liquidity for profitable ones.

A trading pool funded by losses

PaperTrade founder Jez has presented the product as an alternative to centralized platforms for ultra-high-leverage speculation. Rather than matching buyers and sellers through a conventional limit order book, the protocol uses smart contracts to open and close positions against a liquidity mechanism.

The model is built around an uncomfortable but familiar feature of leveraged markets: most heavily leveraged positions eventually lose money. Jez said PaperTrade is designed to accumulate those losses into a pool, while taking on liabilities to traders whose positions close profitably. In a mechanism paper written roughly two years ago, he described the challenge as bootstrapping a pool from zero while creating obligations to early winners and relying on expectations that the system would become solvent as activity grew.

That design resembles a house-backed trading venue more than a neutral marketplace in which every long is matched with a short. The protocol’s balance sheet is exposed to aggregate trader outcomes. If losses exceed profits across participants, the pool grows; if a wave of traders wins at once, the pool must meet those payouts.

PaperTrade’s early figures illustrate how leverage magnifies that exposure. A trader posting $1,000 as margin can control a $1 million position at 1000x leverage. Large notional turnover therefore does not necessarily mean the platform has received equivalent cash collateral or can absorb equivalent losses.

The $54 million pool reported alongside $11 billion in open exposure would leave little room for error during fast, correlated price moves. Perpetual positions can be liquidated quickly once collateral falls below required thresholds, and concentrated positioning can create large payouts or forced closures over short periods.

Hyperliquid data sits at the center of pricing

PaperTrade uses Hyperliquid infrastructure, including HyperEVM precompiled contracts that can read the best bid and offer, or BBO, from Hyperliquid’s markets. Jez said the contracts can access that data once per second without gas costs.

A best bid is the highest current price offered by a buyer, while a best offer is the lowest price sought by a seller. Together, they provide a snapshot of the available market price. Jez argued that Hyperliquid’s market depth makes manipulation expensive, supporting PaperTrade’s zero-slippage execution model.

The project does not operate a traditional limit order book or require users to manage exchange API keys, according to Jez. Positions are meant to be handled through smart-contract calls, with transaction confirmations and event logs recorded on-chain.

That structure can make trading activity more transparent than an internalized centralized platform, but it also concentrates operational reliance on the reference market and the contract logic converting BBO data into execution and liquidation prices. The reported $1.28 million price-feed incident shows why that process will receive close attention as the platform’s pool and exposure expand.

Fees replace the standard trading spread

PaperTrade’s second major departure from conventional perpetual venues is its fee model. Jez said ordinary taker fees and bid-ask spreads become prohibitive at extreme leverage. A 5-basis-point taker fee, equal to 0.05%, would consume 50% of posted margin on a 1000x position before any market move, he said.

Instead of charging a standard fee on every trade, PaperTrade uses what Jez calls an asymmetric fee. Losing positions do not face an additional fee under the model, while profitable positions surrender a share of gains to the protocol. Jez said that once a price move reaches roughly 50 basis points to 1%, the curve flattens, leaving users with about 90% of profits and directing 10% to the protocol.

The model gives PaperTrade a direct claim on profitable outcomes while avoiding an upfront cost that could make short-duration, high-leverage trades unworkable. It also seeks to discourage token farming strategies based on offsetting positions. Jez said a trader could attempt to open delta-neutral trades, close the losing leg before liquidation and retain the profitable leg, but the profit-based fee reduces the benefit of that approach, particularly on small price movements.

The approach may improve the protocol’s ability to collect revenue during profitable trades, but it does not remove the underlying imbalance created when many positions win simultaneously. A fee that takes 10% of gains still leaves the pool responsible for the remaining 90%.

Extreme leverage leaves little margin for volatility

Jez has argued that leverage above 8x can produce negative expected value over a one-hour timeframe even when a trader correctly identifies price direction. The problem, he said, is that ordinary volatility can hit a liquidation threshold before the anticipated move develops.

That risk becomes dramatically sharper near 1000x, where a small adverse price movement can erase nearly all margin. The attraction of “click trading” — placing a directional bet without navigating an order book — was established by earlier high-leverage products such as Rollbit’s 1000x offering in 2022, Jez said. Those products also demonstrated the trust concerns that arise when pricing, liquidations and custody are controlled inside a centralized operator.

PaperTrade shifts parts of that workflow into contracts and public blockchain records, but it also makes the pool’s financial resilience central to the product. The project’s reported launch volumes signal substantial appetite for high-risk perpetual trading. Its early pool size, liquidation events and reported price-feed loss indicate that risk limits, collateral management and oracle protections will determine whether that activity can be sustained.
