Oracle’s shares swung sharply after the company reported fiscal 2027 first-quarter results that beat market expectations and revealed an aggressive expansion in AI data-center spending. The stock opened 7.5% higher at $164.43 on Sept. 11 and reached an intraday high of $165.99 before reversing to close 1.74% lower at $150.28, a move of more than 10% from the session high to low.
The reversal followed a report that showed accelerating cloud revenue and a $664 billion remaining-performance-obligations backlog, but also outlined capital expenditure of $90 billion to $95 billion for the full fiscal year. Traders appeared to welcome Oracle’s demand indicators while reassessing the funding needs, debt burden and execution risks attached to building AI infrastructure at that scale.
Oracle said first-quarter revenue rose 30% year over year to $19.345 billion, above an estimate near $19.14 billion. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $1.92, compared with expectations of about $1.74, according to the figures cited in the company’s results.
Cloud growth drives Oracle’s revenue beat
Cloud revenue reached $11.6 billion, up 62% from a year earlier and accounting for roughly 60% of Oracle’s quarterly revenue. Cloud infrastructure revenue rose 121% to $7.4 billion, providing the strongest evidence that the company’s push into AI computing capacity is reshaping a business once defined mainly by database software and on-premises enterprise systems.
Traditional on-premises software revenue fell 3%, reinforcing the divide between Oracle’s legacy operations and its cloud infrastructure business. The company is increasingly being valued on whether it can convert AI-related demand into durable, high-margin cloud revenue while financing the physical infrastructure required to serve those customers.
Oracle reported adding 850 megawatts of data-center capacity during the quarter and delivering more than 300,000 graphics processing units. Infrastructure utilization stood at 97.9%, while GPU contracts that expired during the period were renewed or resold at prices averaging about 20% above their original levels, according to the company.
Those operating figures helped lift shares across the server and power-infrastructure supply chain. Hewlett Packard Enterprise rose 12.44% on Sept. 11, Dell gained 11.98%, Super Micro Computer added 7.28%, Arista Networks advanced 5.61%, onsemi rose 8.51%, and Vertiv climbed 3.60%. The market’s response placed more value on companies selling equipment and electrical infrastructure into the data-center buildout than on AI cloud providers bearing the largest capital requirements.
CoreWeave and Nebius, two other companies associated with AI computing capacity, followed a pattern closer to Oracle’s. Both traded about 4% higher during the session before closing lower, indicating that demand for AI processing remains attractive to traders but does not remove concern over the cost of adding capacity.
Spending plan places focus on cash flow and debt
Oracle’s conference call on Sept. 10 put its capital plan at the center of the debate. The company forecast full-year capital expenditure of $90 billion to $95 billion and said net cash capital expenditure would not exceed $70 billion.
Quarterly capital expenditure was listed at $28.5 billion. Free cash flow was negative $5.4 billion, though that was less negative than the market expectation of negative $9.56 billion. Operating cash flow included $11.36 billion in customer prepayments, showing that customers are helping fund some of the capacity buildout before the associated revenue is fully recognized.
Oracle reported net debt of $132.1 billion and interest expense of $1.428 billion for the quarter, up from $923 million a year earlier. The increase in interest costs reflects the financial consequence of expanding data-center capacity rapidly. Market estimates cited in the materials project net debt could exceed $160 billion by fiscal 2028.
The company’s enterprise value was cited at $586.5 billion, compared with a market capitalization of $454.4 billion. That roughly 29% gap reflects the scale of debt now embedded in the valuation. Oracle’s shares implied a forward price-to-earnings multiple near 19 times based on its full-year adjusted earnings-per-share guidance of $8.10, while consensus projections for the next fiscal year put earnings near $10.97 per share.
Those valuation measures depend heavily on Oracle delivering the revenue attached to its cloud contracts without allowing spending, financing costs or customer losses to outrun earnings growth.
Backlog is large, but concentrated
Oracle ended the quarter with $664 billion in remaining performance obligations, up $209 billion from a year earlier. It also said newly signed AI cloud contracts exceeded $30 billion during the quarter.
The backlog provides unusual visibility into future demand, but it is not equivalent to immediate revenue or free cash flow. Revenue is recognized as Oracle delivers contracted capacity, and the figure does not include the full cost of supplying that capacity. Market estimates referenced in the materials indicated that nearly half of the backlog could be linked to one customer, adding concentration risk to an otherwise striking demand number.
Oracle forecast at least $90 billion in full-year revenue, giving the company a high bar to clear as it converts contracts into operating infrastructure. The combination of near-full utilization and substantial customer prepayments suggests demand is tangible, but the balance sheet means delays in construction, customer deployment or contract timing would carry greater weight than in Oracle’s software-led past.
Ellison cancels planned share-sale arrangement
A trading-plan filing released with the quarterly report showed that Oracle co-founder and chairman Larry Ellison had established a Rule 10b5-1 plan on June 22 that could have allowed sales of up to 50 million shares. Oracle said on Sept. 12 that Ellison had cancelled the plan, that no shares had been sold under it, and that he had no other plans to sell Oracle shares.
The statement removed a potential source of concern following the earnings volatility. Off-exchange weekend trading cited in the materials showed Oracle shares up about 2% after the announcement, though such trading can be thin and may not indicate regular-session demand.
The episode unfolded during a broader split in technology stocks. Software names lagged on Sept. 11, while infrastructure suppliers gained. Adobe shares fell despite the company reporting third-quarter revenue of $6.76 billion, up 13% year over year, alongside AI-related annual recurring revenue growth of more than 150% and platform users exceeding 1 billion.
For cryptocurrency markets, Oracle’s results offer a narrower message than claims that server spending automatically raises the value of AI-related tokens. Spending on centralized cloud capacity can create demand for chips, power systems, networking gear and data-center construction, yet it does not by itself create revenue or token demand for decentralized computing networks.
Digital-asset projects offering computing or storage capacity would need to demonstrate that customers are choosing their networks, paying for usage and generating sustainable economic activity. Oracle’s quarter instead underscores how competitive the market for AI infrastructure has become: the companies winning contracts are also committing enormous sums to hardware, electricity and financing before much of the promised revenue arrives.
