Oracle’s cloud infrastructure business more than doubled in its fiscal 2027 first quarter, driving 30% revenue growth while pushing the company deeper into an expensive data-center expansion financed partly through a $20 billion equity issuance.
The company reported first-quarter revenue of $19.35 billion, up 30% from a year earlier, while adjusted earnings per share rose by the same rate to $1.92. Oracle shares gained about 5.5% in after-hours trading following the release.
Cloud infrastructure revenue climbed 121% year over year to $7.4 billion, according to Oracle. Total cloud revenue, which includes infrastructure and cloud applications, rose 62% to $11.6 billion and accounted for roughly 60% of quarterly revenue. The figures place cloud capacity, rather than Oracle’s legacy software operations, at the center of the company’s growth profile.
Capacity buildout drives cloud growth
Oracle said it delivered 850 megawatts of new data-center capacity during the quarter as it expanded computing resources for AI-related workloads. Since the previous quarter ended, the company delivered more than 300,000 graphics processing units to AI cloud customers and said its delivery capability had approached three times the prior quarter’s level.
That pace illustrates the operational challenge behind Oracle’s cloud surge. Securing customers for large AI computing contracts requires more than adding servers: providers need access to chips, power, networking equipment, land, and grid connections before the capacity can be brought online. Oracle’s reported 850MW delivery figure suggests the company is moving from announcing AI demand to building physical infrastructure at utility-scale levels.
The International Energy Agency has forecast that global data-center electricity consumption could exceed 1,000 terawatt-hours by 2030, reflecting the large power demands created by AI computing and cloud expansion. Oracle’s capital spending shows how those industry forecasts are already influencing corporate budgets.
Remaining performance obligations, a measure of contracted revenue yet to be recognized, reached $664 billion at the end of the quarter. Oracle said the total increased by $209 billion and that it added more than $30 billion in new AI cloud contracts during the period. The RPO balance was equivalent to about 34 times the company’s first-quarter revenue.
Such a large contract backlog gives Oracle more visibility into potential future demand, but it also raises pressure to deliver capacity fast enough to meet customer commitments. For infrastructure providers, signed contracts do not eliminate execution risks related to power availability, hardware deliveries, construction schedules, and the cost of financing facilities.
Cash flow turns negative after heavy capital spending
Oracle generated approximately $23.0 billion in operating cash flow, a 184% increase from a year earlier. Yet capital expenditures reached about $28.5 billion, leaving free cash flow at roughly negative $5.0 billion for the quarter.
The difference between strong operating cash generation and negative free cash flow captures the financial trade-off in Oracle’s strategy. Cloud infrastructure can produce recurring revenue once deployed, but the systems supporting high-performance AI workloads require substantial spending before that revenue is fully recognized.
Oracle completed a $20 billion at-the-market equity issuance during the quarter to help fund its data-center buildout. Raising equity limits the company’s need to cover all expansion costs with borrowing, although it can dilute existing shareholders. The funding move also indicates that Oracle sees the infrastructure requirements associated with its contracted cloud demand as too large to be supported solely by operating cash flow in the near term.
The company’s older business lines moved in the opposite direction. Cloud applications revenue increased 10% to $4.2 billion, a far slower pace than infrastructure. Software revenue declined 3% to $5.5 billion, which Oracle attributed to customers moving workloads from on-premises deployments to cloud services.
That mix shift may reduce the relative contribution of Oracle’s traditional software licensing model, historically associated with high margins and less capital-intensive growth. In exchange, Oracle is pursuing a larger share of spending on AI compute, where revenue growth can be rapid but depends on continuous investment in equipment and facilities.
Oracle raises outlook as cloud contracts accumulate
For the fiscal 2027 second quarter, Oracle forecast total revenue growth of 30% to 34% and cloud revenue growth of 65% to 71%. It guided for adjusted earnings per share of $1.85 to $1.93.
Using the midpoint of Oracle’s total revenue growth outlook, second-quarter revenue would be about $21.2 billion. The company also set a full-year revenue target of at least $90.0 billion and raised its full-year adjusted EPS target to $8.10 from $8.05.
After reporting $19.35 billion in the first quarter, Oracle would need to generate about $70.65 billion across the remaining three quarters to reach its annual revenue target. The second-quarter outlook indicates management expects cloud infrastructure growth to remain the primary source of that expansion.
For crypto-related computing businesses, Oracle’s results offer a practical reminder that AI demand is increasingly competing for the same physical inputs: specialized processors, data-center space, electricity, and grid access.
