On chain crypto options stay below 1%

2026-10-23 09:09

On-chain crypto options set monthly records in September 2026, yet the market remained a rounding error beside decentralized perpetual futures, underlining how difficult it remains to build liquid, capital-efficient alternatives to leveraged perps.

Reported on-chain options notional roughly doubled to about $5 billion in September, while premium volume rose by one-third to $85 million and peak open interest approached $2.5 billion. Over the 30 days through Oct. 19, on-chain options venues handled $4.9 billion in notional volume, compared with $627 billion on perpetual-futures DEXs, according to the datasets cited in the analysis. That places options at roughly 0.8% of perp DEX activity.

The disparity persists even as options offer a straightforward advantage for traders concerned about liquidation. A backtest using Bitcoin daily closing prices from January 2018 through October 2026 found that a 10x BTC perpetual long had a 47% probability of liquidation over 180 days. The likelihood was 29% over 90 days and 18% over 60 days. A purchased call option cannot be liquidated before it expires, although the buyer can lose the entire upfront premium.

That distinction is becoming more visible as perpetuals expand beyond crypto assets. Platforms have begun listing contracts linked to equities and commodities, with some offering weekend trading. On March 23, trade[XYZ] recorded $2.3 billion in combined daily volume across WTI and Brent crude perpetuals, demonstrating how the perp format is moving into markets traditionally served by futures and options.

Perpetuals remain the default leveraged trade

A replay of Bitcoin’s sharp Oct. 10, 2025 selloff illustrates the risk-management gap between the products. The case study opened three $1,000 BTC bullish positions at 12:00 UTC: a 10x perpetual long, a 30-day call option, and a 10x perpetual paired with a seven-day protective put struck 5% below the entry price.

The unhedged perpetual was liquidated at 21:14 UTC. The call’s value fell to $181 at the market low but rebounded above $800 less than an hour later. The hedge cost $52 in premium and allowed the leveraged perpetual position to survive the selloff.

Similar tests using Deribit pricing across eight assets produced the same broad result, though the cost of protection was substantially higher for smaller tokens. Protective put premiums ranged from $250 to $340 out of a $1,000 position for those assets, reflecting the higher implied volatility embedded in their option prices.

The comparison does not mean options automatically provide cheaper exposure. A trader buying options repeatedly can lose premium after premium, especially in stagnant markets. The 2018-to-2026 BTC dataset found that a weekly call struck 10% above spot expired worthless in 87% of weeks. The buyer’s risk is capped, but the seller must be compensated for taking the other side of that lopsided payoff.

Liquidity is split across too many contracts

On-chain options face a structural issue that perpetuals largely avoid: liquidity must be distributed across different strikes and expiries. A single snapshot of Deribit showed 884 BTC options spread over 11 expiry dates. Each contract requires buyers and sellers to quote prices continuously before it feels reliably tradable.

A pricing comparison conducted on Oct. 19 showed how this fragmentation affects newer venues. The sample included BTC and ETH options on Deribit and Derive, excluding contracts expiring within three days and deeply out-of-the-money strikes. Deribit displayed two-sided quotes on all 346 included strikes. Derive showed two-sided pricing on 206 strikes, with offers within 0.2% of Deribit where quotes were available. Derive’s average spread was about 3.8% of the option price, compared with 2.6% on Deribit.

Liquidity deteriorated further outside BTC and ETH. Public API data for Dec. 25, 2026 expiries showed 220 strikes across PUMP, LIT, ADA, VVV and CC that had only one quote in the dataset. A transaction involving a December PUMP call also took an extended period to execute, while spreads widened sharply away from the underlying token’s spot price.

These conditions create a practical problem for traders seeking to exit or adjust a position. A listed contract may provide a theoretical hedge, but a hedge is less useful when its market is thin or its bid-ask spread consumes much of its expected payoff.

Margin efficiency determines whether sellers appear

The shortage of option sellers is closely tied to collateral rules. A writer who sells a call or put generally needs enough collateral to cover potentially large losses, while also managing delta — the exposure that changes as the underlying asset moves.

Under a full-lock model, selling a $110,000 BTC call for a monthly premium of $1,800 could require $100,000 in collateral. A portfolio-margin system that measures the risk of an entire account, rather than treating each trade as an isolated worst-case loss, could reduce that requirement to about $15,000 under a 15% adverse-move assumption. The implied monthly return on collateral would rise from 1.8% to roughly 12%.

That difference helps explain why several on-chain options venues have adopted hybrid designs. They use off-chain matching engines for rapid quote updates while keeping collateral, margin calculations and settlement on-chain. The model seeks to make market making viable without requiring traders to surrender custody to a centralized venue.

Derive, formerly Lyra, cleared about $18 billion in options notional through Oct. 19, according to the supplied figures. FalconX was its only publicly identified market maker. Derive’s structure tokenizes an off-chain custody balance into an on-chain representation, allowing institutions to quote without transferring all collateral fully onto a public blockchain.

Paradex integrated Paradigm’s block-trading network on Sept. 15. Paradigm handles about one-quarter of Deribit’s block trades, according to the analysis. Paradex’s daily options volume climbed from under $3 million to $58.7 million within a week, although open interest later declined from above $250 million to about $96 million by Oct. 14. The pattern points to episodic large transactions rather than a stable base of continuous retail and market-maker flow.

Premium exposure remains concentrated

Notional volume can overstate activity in contracts far from the market price. Premium paid provides a more direct indication of how much cash traders are committing to option exposure.

On that basis, Derive accounted for more than 90% of activity in the September data. The concentration suggests that on-chain options have yet to develop a broad field of venues with comparable depth, even as new protocols, vaults and tokenized-options designs emerge.

Rysk has taken a different route, accepting HYPE, BTC and ETH deposits and selling covered calls to whitelisted market makers. It processed $148 million in notional during the 30 days through Oct. 14, before activity slowed as call buyers reached limits on their HYPE exposure.

Earlier pool-based designs showed the risks of putting passive depositors on the sell side. In May 2021, Hegic depositors lost most of roughly $80 million. Lyra depositors recorded losses of 4.9% in its BTC pool and 17.6% in its ETH pool over seven months. PsyOptions shut its product in June 2024.

Those outcomes make the current focus on portfolio margin, deep perp hedging and unified trading accounts more than a technical upgrade. Option writers need to adjust hedges frequently, and the venue capturing that hedge flow may collect more recurring fees than the options platform itself.

On-chain options activity is growing, but the figures show a market still searching for a scalable way to attract sellers, concentrate liquidity and offer protection at a price traders will accept. Until those conditions improve, perpetual futures are likely to remain the dominant on-chain derivatives product, even with their far greater liquidation risk.
