Inflation rises as Nasdaq and small caps fall

2026-10-19 08:55

U.S. technology shares suffered their sharpest weekly retreat since June as accelerating inflation data pushed borrowing costs back to the center of market attention, widening the gap between growth stocks and blue chips. The Nasdaq Composite fell 4.5% in the week ended Oct. 16, while the S&P 500 lost 1.9% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.7%, according to index closing data.

The split left the Nasdaq at 26,140.03 and the S&P 500 at 7,659.44. The Dow ended at 52,002.41, supported by its relatively smaller exposure to the highest-valued technology companies. Smaller U.S. businesses also came under pressure, with the Russell 2000 down 3.0% for the week.

Friday’s session captured the abrupt reversal in technology sentiment. The Nasdaq dropped 2.1% in one day, its steepest weekly performance since June, while 75 companies in the S&P 500’s technology sector ended lower. Only seven sector constituents avoided a decline.

Chipmakers led the retreat. Micron Technology fell 5.6% on Friday, Advanced Micro Devices lost 6.0%, Broadcom declined 4.5%, and Intel dropped 5.8%. Those moves reflected a single session rather than full-week losses, but they showed how quickly traders reduced exposure to companies tied to artificial intelligence infrastructure and semiconductor demand.

Inflation data revive rate concerns

September’s inflation releases gave markets a fresh reason to reassess the path of interest rates. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index rose 3.7% from a year earlier in September, accelerating from 3.4% in August. Consumer prices increased 0.6% from the previous month.

Gasoline was a major driver of the monthly increase. The Bureau of Labor Statistics said gasoline prices rose 9.1% in September and accounted for more than half of the monthly CPI advance.

Producer prices delivered a second inflationary signal. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that its final-demand Producer Price Index increased 1.3% in September from August and 6.3% from a year earlier. CPI measures prices paid by consumers, while PPI tracks price changes received by domestic producers, so the two indexes do not move in lockstep. Their simultaneous acceleration nevertheless raised concerns that price pressures may remain embedded across the economy.

That backdrop is particularly uncomfortable for expensive technology stocks, whose valuations depend heavily on assumptions about earnings several years ahead. Higher interest rates reduce the present value of those projected profits and can make debt-funded expansion more costly.

AI financing comes under scrutiny

The selloff also shifted attention from headline AI demand to the cost of building the computing capacity behind it. Data centers require large upfront spending on chips, servers, networking equipment, cooling systems and power connections. Companies financing those projects through a mix of operating cash flow, equity issuance and debt are more exposed when yields or credit spreads rise.

CoreWeave became one focal point during the week as pressure appeared in both its equity and debt. Higher secondary-market yields on its bonds reflected trader scrutiny of the company’s computing contracts, the residual value of equipment and the schedule of its debt obligations.

A move in one issuer’s bonds cannot establish a market-wide turning point for AI infrastructure. It does underline a distinction increasingly relevant to the sector: large contract announcements do not automatically translate into immediate cash collection or operating profit. As funding becomes more expensive, markets are likely to place greater weight on capital spending, customer concentration, contract duration and free cash flow.

Hong Kong technology shares also lag

Hong Kong equities showed a milder version of the same divide. The Hang Seng Index closed Oct. 16 at 24,186.83, down about 0.1% from Oct. 9, while the Hang Seng Tech Index fell about 2.1% over the week to 4,108.24.

The modest weekly moves concealed sharper daily swings. The technology benchmark lost 2.72% on Oct. 15 before recovering 1.16% on Oct. 16. Hong Kong’s market was closed Oct. 19 for a holiday and was scheduled to reopen Oct. 20.

China’s latest official data added a mixed macroeconomic backdrop. The National Bureau of Statistics of China said gross domestic product rose 4.6% year over year during the first three quarters. Third-quarter GDP increased 4.5% from a year earlier and 1.2% from the previous quarter. September retail sales rose 1.1% year over year, while producer prices increased 5.0%.

Bitcoin holds near $81,000

Bitcoin moved less dramatically than technology shares during the period. Based on UTC daily closes, BTC declined from roughly $82,564 on Oct. 9 to about $81,524 on Oct. 16, a decrease of around 1.3%.

The comparison with stock indexes requires caution because Bitcoin trades continuously while U.S. equities close for weekends and overnight sessions. Even so, Bitcoin’s narrow range near $81,000 stood apart from the sharp drop in semiconductor and AI-linked equities.

The relative stability does not remove the relevance of interest-rate expectations for digital assets. Higher financing costs can affect leverage, liquidity and appetite for speculative positions across markets. Yet Bitcoin did not mirror the Nasdaq’s selloff point for point during the week, suggesting that immediate positioning in technology equities was driven by concerns specific to growth valuations and capital-intensive AI projects.

Earnings and economic data ahead

The coming week will test whether corporate results can offset inflation-driven anxiety. Netflix is scheduled to report third-quarter earnings on Oct. 20, followed by Meta and Tesla after the U.S. market close on Oct. 21.

Tesla has already reported third-quarter deliveries of 486,532 vehicles, production of 464,391 vehicles and energy-storage deployments of 13.7 GWh. Its earnings release will put the focus on vehicle margins, operating cash flow and the contribution from energy storage.

For Meta and Netflix, traders will watch revenue growth alongside spending plans and cash generation. Meta’s capital expenditure outlook carries particular weight after the market’s renewed focus on the financing requirements of AI infrastructure.

The economic calendar is lighter but still contains several data points that could move rate expectations. September housing starts and building permits are due Oct. 20, initial jobless claims on Oct. 22, and preliminary S&P Global manufacturing and services PMIs alongside the University of Michigan’s final consumer-sentiment reading on Oct. 23. After a week in which inflation punished the most rate-sensitive stocks, those releases will help determine whether the technology selloff broadens or remains concentrated in the market’s most expensive growth names.
