Grayscale Zcash ETF drives ZEC rally

2026-09-10 03:27

Zcash outperformed a weakening cryptocurrency market over the past week, climbing more than 43% as Bitcoin briefly fell to $77,666 before recovering toward $79,000 during Asia trading. The rally coincided with rapid asset growth at Grayscale’s spot Zcash ETF, ZCSH, which disclosure filings showed had surpassed $500 million in assets within two weeks of its NYSE Arca listing.

The speed of the fund’s accumulation has placed Zcash, a relatively smaller cryptocurrency by market value, at the center of a market increasingly focused on regulated access to privacy-focused assets. Grayscale’s filings showed more than $70 million in net subscriptions during the period, in addition to an in-kind creation valued at roughly $100 million.

That in-kind transaction added 85,705 ZEC to the fund in exchange for newly issued shares. In-kind creations allow authorized market participants to deliver the underlying asset directly to an ETF rather than contributing cash, a structure commonly used to keep a fund’s market price close to the value of the assets it holds.

Grayscale’s reported Zcash holdings climbed above 550,000 ZEC, equal to roughly 3% of the estimated circulating supply of 16.7 million coins. A fund holding that share of supply can become a meaningful source of demand in a market where trading liquidity is much thinner than in Bitcoin or Ethereum.

ETF growth meets a limited-supply asset

Zcash has a maximum supply of 21 million coins and follows a four-year halving schedule, reducing the issuance rate over time. The structure resembles Bitcoin’s capped supply model, although the two networks serve different purposes and have sharply different levels of market liquidity, institutional participation, and daily trading activity.

The ETF’s purchases have arrived alongside a rise in the number of coins held in Zcash’s shielded pool. On-chain data showed more than 4.86 million ZEC in shielded addresses, where transaction details can be protected through Zcash’s privacy technology.

Shielded holdings do not automatically mean those coins have been removed permanently from the market. Users can move ZEC between shielded and transparent addresses. Yet an expanding shielded pool can reduce the portion of supply immediately visible on public blockchain ledgers, complicating attempts to estimate how much ZEC is readily available for sale.

The combination of ETF holdings and shielded balances has strengthened the market’s scarcity narrative. That argument should be treated carefully: neither fund ownership nor shielded storage prevents holders from selling. Price moves will continue to depend on actual demand, derivatives positioning, broader risk appetite, and liquidity across trading venues.

Derivatives activity reaches a record

Futures open interest in Zcash rose to a record $2.8 billion, according to the market figures cited in the article. Open interest measures the total value of outstanding futures contracts and can signal deeper participation, but it can also indicate increased leverage in both bullish and bearish positions.

High open interest often makes a market more sensitive to sudden price moves. A rally can force traders who bet against the asset to buy back positions, adding upward pressure. A decline can trigger liquidations among heavily leveraged long positions, intensifying a selloff. The futures figure therefore supports the view that Zcash has become an active speculative market, rather than proving that demand is entirely directional.

Listed options tied to ZCSH were also approved for trading on the day the ETF crossed the reported $500 million asset threshold. Options would give market participants additional tools to hedge ETF exposure or take positions on volatility without buying or selling ZEC directly.

For fund holders and professional traders, that development could make ZCSH easier to use in portfolio strategies. It also creates a route for bearish positioning and income-focused options strategies, meaning listed options do not inherently add buying pressure to the underlying cryptocurrency.

Privacy technology remains central to the trade

Zcash’s market resurgence has renewed attention on the network’s long-running work on private transactions. The project’s Sapling and Orchard upgrades improved the efficiency of shielded transfers, reducing the time required to generate certain shielded transactions on mobile light wallets from tens of seconds to hundreds of milliseconds, according to network development materials.

Those improvements address a practical obstacle that privacy-focused networks have faced for years: privacy features are less useful if they are too slow or computationally demanding for ordinary mobile users. Faster shielded transactions give users a more workable option for protecting transaction information, though usage depends on wallet support and individual preferences.

Privacy coins also operate under a more complicated regulatory and compliance environment than many other digital assets. Some trading platforms and financial service providers have limited support for privacy-focused tokens because shielded transactions can make transaction monitoring more difficult. The arrival of a listed Zcash ETF suggests regulated-market access is expanding in this instance, but it does not remove the policy questions surrounding privacy-preserving cryptocurrency tools.

A crowded trade faces Bitcoin risk

Technical indicators pointed to a potentially stretched Zcash market after the rapid advance. The 14-day daily relative strength index, or RSI, was reported above 80. RSI is commonly used to gauge the speed and magnitude of recent price movements; readings above 70 are often viewed as overbought, though they can remain elevated during strong rallies.

Bitcoin’s movement remains the immediate macro risk for Zcash and other digital assets. The supplied market scenario placed Bitcoin near $78,000 and identified a possible decline toward $75,000 if support fails. A deeper Bitcoin selloff could test whether Zcash’s ETF-driven demand is strong enough to sustain its relative strength during a broader risk-off move.

Zcash’s advance has been supported by a rare convergence of new regulated demand, rising derivatives activity, and a growing share of coins held in shielded addresses. The next phase will depend less on the first two weeks of fund inflows than on whether those flows persist once the initial ETF launch period gives way to normal trading conditions.
