Gold falls as dollar weakens and yields drop

2026-10-23 03:57

AnalysisMacro

Gold fell below $4,000 an ounce on Friday despite a weaker US dollar and declining Treasury yields, breaking a set of market relationships that normally support bullion and raising the prospect that forced selling across markets was driving the move.

Spot gold slipped 0.6% intraday, reaching its lowest level since July and erasing gains made since August, according to Jesse Colombo, the independent precious-metals analyst and founder of BubbleBubble Report. The selloff came as the dollar index declined by 15 basis points and Treasury prices rose, pushing yields lower.

Gold often benefits when yields fall because lower returns on government debt reduce the opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset. A weaker dollar can also make dollar-priced bullion cheaper for buyers using other currencies. Friday’s decline therefore left a conventional macro explanation incomplete.

Colombo said gold was testing a technical support range between $3,900 and $4,000 an ounce, where prices found buyers during the summer before rebounding. Whether bullion can remain above that band has become the immediate chart-based question after the sharp retreat.

Equity selling may be reaching across asset classes

Colombo’s main explanation centered on liquidation pressure originating in technology and artificial-intelligence-linked equities. When leveraged traders face losses in one part of a portfolio, they may sell liquid assets elsewhere to meet margin requirements or rebuild cash balances. Gold, despite its defensive reputation, can become a source of funds during that process.

The pattern was not confined to US shares. Colombo cited sharp declines in Japan’s Nikkei and South Korea’s KOSPI as evidence of broader deleveraging across equity markets. That type of selling can temporarily push assets that usually respond to different fundamentals in the same direction.

Brent crude rose above $110 a barrel for the first time since May 5, gaining 0.84% on the day, while West Texas Intermediate crude traded above $100, up 1.35%. The oil move pointed to pressure in energy markets but did not, by itself, offer a clear reason for gold’s decline.

The cross-market action also prompted discussion of whether digital assets had become more exposed to the same liquidity events. Colombo said a 30-day correlation measure between gold and major digital tokens had reached plus 0.68, near the 99th percentile of its historical observations. A positive correlation means the assets have recently moved in similar directions, though a short-term reading does not establish that they form a permanent single trading group.

Correlations can rise rapidly during market stress as funds sell multiple liquid positions at once. They can also reverse once immediate financing pressure eases. The available market moves point more directly to a short-term liquidity event than to a settled change in the long-running relationship between bullion and cryptocurrencies.

Yen move complicates the dollar story

The Japanese yen’s sharp appreciation added another layer to the session. Colombo said the move resembled market behavior seen around suspected yen-support operations since February, when action to strengthen the Japanese currency can weigh on the dollar.

No new intervention was confirmed in the material provided. The possibility remains an inference based on price behavior rather than an announced policy action.

A stronger yen can place pressure on positions built through the yen carry trade, in which market participants borrow at relatively low Japanese interest rates and deploy the proceeds into higher-returning assets elsewhere. If the yen rises quickly, repaying yen-denominated borrowing becomes more expensive in foreign-currency terms, potentially encouraging traders to reduce risk.

The total size of the yen carry trade is difficult to measure because borrowing and derivatives positions are spread across banks, funds and global markets. Colombo referred to estimates of roughly $1 trillion in open exposure. That figure should be treated as an approximation rather than a precise measure of outstanding positions.

The mechanism nevertheless helps explain why an abrupt yen rally can affect technology shares, commodities and digital assets simultaneously. Positions funded with low-cost yen may be reduced when currency losses begin to offset returns elsewhere. Such unwinds do not necessarily reflect a reassessment of gold’s inflation outlook, Bitcoin’s network activity, or oil supply conditions; they can reflect a need to reduce financing risk quickly.

Lower yields may have cushioned bullion’s decline

Treasury yields falling during the gold selloff may have limited the extent of the decline. Colombo argued that bullion could have dropped further if yields had risen alongside the equity weakness, as a stronger dollar and higher real yields would have added conventional macro pressure to any liquidation.

Instead, the bond market signaled demand for government debt while the dollar softened. That combination weakens a simple risk-off explanation, since periods of broad market stress often bring both lower Treasury yields and a stronger dollar.

The disconnect leaves traders watching whether the usual relationships reassert themselves. A recovering dollar alongside continued equity weakness could add pressure to gold, while a further decline in yields may offer support if forced selling subsides. Gold’s response near $3,900 to $4,000 will provide a more immediate indication of whether the decline is finding buyers or turning into a deeper technical breakdown.

Digital-asset traders face a related challenge if cross-asset correlations remain elevated. Heavy borrowing can amplify losses during abrupt moves, particularly in derivatives markets where liquidation thresholds are automatic. Reducing leverage lowers the chance that a short-term price swing forces a position to close at the worst point of a selloff.

Holding assets in self-custody can reduce exposure to a platform’s operational or withdrawal risks, though it introduces responsibility for securing private keys and recovery information. Spot purchases avoid the liquidation mechanics associated with borrowed derivatives positions, while cash reserves give traders flexibility during sudden volatility.

For now, the market’s clearest signals are gold’s defense of its summer support zone, the yen’s direction, and whether selling in technology stocks continues to spread into other liquid assets.
