Cami Clark draws scrutiny as Anthropic IPO nears

2026-08-14 10:14

Anthropic’s reported preparations for an initial public offering have drawn fresh attention to Cami Clark, the wife of Chief Executive Dario Amodei, whose informal role in the artificial intelligence company’s political and financial network has become more visible despite her holding no formal position there.

People familiar with the couple’s public schedule said Clark has accompanied Amodei to influential gatherings, including the World Economic Forum in Davos and Allen & Co.’s annual Sun Valley conference. During a trip to New Delhi, where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited senior AI executives and permitted each to bring one companion, Amodei reportedly attended with Clark rather than an Anthropic executive.

The appearances coincide with reports that Anthropic is considering an IPO as soon as this fall that could seek a valuation above $2 trillion. Such a valuation would place the company among the world’s largest listed technology businesses, while increasing scrutiny of how its founders developed relationships with funders and policymakers.

Clark’s involvement appears to have centered on introductions rather than an operating role. People familiar with her activities said she has met political figures and prospective backers before connecting them with Amodei. One of those relationships involved former Google chief executive Eric Schmidt, who became part of Anthropic’s early group of backers after an introduction facilitated by Clark, according to people familiar with the matter.

Anthropic announced a $124 million Series A financing round in May 2021 that included Schmidt. The company was founded months earlier by Dario Amodei, his sister and Anthropic President Daniela Amodei, and five former OpenAI employees after disagreements inside OpenAI’s leadership team.

An informal network around Anthropic’s CEO

Clark has kept a comparatively low public profile. Several online profiles associated with her, including a personal website, LinkedIn page and Instagram account, are no longer active or accessible. Dario Amodei’s Wikipedia entry did not list a spouse until this summer and did not identify Clark by name.

That limited public footprint contrasts with accounts from people who have met the couple at industry events. They described Clark as participating in direct conversations that later developed into introductions to Amodei.

At the July Sun Valley gathering, Clark had lunch with Ivanka Trump and spoke with Jared Kushner, according to people familiar with those interactions. The meetings came as Anthropic navigated a reportedly difficult relationship with the Trump administration over the permitted use of its Claude AI model in Pentagon-related work.

People familiar with the situation said Anthropic resisted requests to remove certain restrictions on military applications of Claude. The administration subsequently described Anthropic as a supply-chain risk, those people said, a designation that limited the ability of Defense Department partners to use the company’s technology in related projects. Anthropic has filed legal action connected to the dispute, according to people familiar with the matter.

Clark has also communicated to political contacts that Anthropic presents its work as aligned with US interests, people familiar with her outreach said. Her reported relationship with Ivanka Trump could give the company an additional personal channel into a political environment where AI companies are competing for government contracts, favorable policy treatment and access to national-security work.

Earlier ventures and the Schmidt connection

Clark was born in Reno, Nevada, in 1979 and grew up in a blue-collar household, according to a person familiar with her background. She began working at 14 through a plumbers’ union where her grandmother and great-aunt worked, that person said.

After high school, Clark moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to study architecture at the California College of the Arts. She later worked in business development for office-furniture maker Herman Miller.

Her earlier business ventures included Eddice, an adult-film project aimed at women that she co-founded with Michelle Capocefalo. Publicly released US Justice Department materials related to Jeffrey Epstein include emails from 2011 in which literary agent John Brockman introduced Clark and Capocefalo to Epstein while the pair were seeking funding for Eddice.

The correspondence shows Clark sent Epstein a script and followed up about a potential financing round. Epstein responded that he could not finance sex-related television, according to the emails. Clark later presented him with a separate concept for a women-focused social dieting application, and the two corresponded for roughly two years. A person who knew Clark at the time said Brockman did not explain Epstein’s background when making the introduction.

Eddice raised only hundreds of thousands of dollars, below its intended target, according to people familiar with the venture. Its website stopped updating around 2013.

That year, Clark formed Female Algorithm Technologies, a proposed women-focused health-clinic business with annual membership fees ranging from $9,000 to $20,000. People familiar with the venture said Schmidt funded the effort. A document connected to the company listed a consultant as “Dr. Dario Amodei,” during the period in which Clark met Amodei and began dating him the following year.

Female Algorithm Technologies did not launch. Clark later joined virtual-reality gesture-control company Leap Motion as head of revenue in 2016, where she met Mira Murati, who would later serve as OpenAI’s chief technology officer, according to people familiar with Clark’s professional network.

A proposed fund raised internal concerns

Before Anthropic’s formation, Clark shared Amodei’s research papers with wealthy technology contacts who could potentially support a new company, according to a person familiar with the matter.

In February 2021, shortly after Anthropic was established, Clark sent Schmidt a 40-page proposal for a vehicle called the “Mother of AGI Fund,” according to documents reviewed by people familiar with the proposal. The fund was designed to formalize a role around Anthropic while managing Schmidt’s investments, with a target size of several billion dollars.

Daniela Amodei and other Anthropic co-founders opposed the proposal because of Clark’s personal relationship with the company’s chief executive, people familiar with internal discussions said. Schmidt ultimately invested directly in Anthropic instead of through the proposed fund.

The episode illustrates the governance questions that can emerge when a private company’s founders rely on personal networks to secure capital and political access. As Anthropic moves closer to public markets, formal disclosures, board oversight and clearer boundaries around external representatives would face closer examination from prospective traders and regulators.

The supplied claims that an Anthropic IPO would force capital out of cryptocurrencies, trigger selling across digital assets, or require traders to shift into fiat are not supported by evidence presented in the material. A large technology listing can influence allocations in equity markets, but it does not by itself establish a causal link to cryptocurrency prices, liquidity or federal policy toward decentralized networks.
