Blockchain.com has launched API Trading, an institutional interface that gives eligible clients automated, around-the-clock access to the companys principal digital-asset liquidity through a single connection. Announced in London on Nov. 5, the service extends Blockchain.coms existing over-the-counter trading operation beyond voice and chat channels, targeting firms that need direct electronic execution within their own trading systems.
The company said the API provides executable, all-in quotes across major cryptocurrencies, altcoins and stablecoins. Clients can select settlement schedules suited to their operational processes, while eligible counterparties may trade without pre-funding accounts, according to Blockchain.com.
The launch places Blockchain.coms institutional business more directly in competition for electronic OTC flow, where clients typically seek larger trades, customized settlement and less exposure of their order intentions than they may find on public order books. An API connection could allow trading desks to request prices and execute transactions automatically rather than relying solely on messages or phone-based workflows.
Electronic execution added to OTC desk
Blockchain.com said API Trading is designed to work alongside, rather than replace, its existing OTC voice and chat services. That gives institutions a choice between automated execution for routine or time-sensitive activity and human-assisted trading for orders that require more discussion around pricing, liquidity or settlement.
The company described the product as a single connection to its principal liquidity, meaning clients execute directly against Blockchain.com rather than routing orders through several external venues. In practice, that structure could simplify operational processes for firms managing relationships, technology integrations and settlement arrangements across multiple counterparties.
Principal liquidity generally refers to a firm trading from its own balance sheet instead of acting solely as an intermediary matching buyers and sellers. That model can provide a firm quote that a client may accept immediately, though the availability and pricing of those quotes will depend on the asset, market conditions and trade size.
Blockchain.com said its quotes are transparent and fully executable, meaning the displayed price incorporates the terms of a transaction rather than requiring a client to calculate separate fees after receiving a market indication. The company did not disclose pricing tiers, trade-size requirements or the jurisdictions where the API will be available.
Flexible settlement addresses capital use
The option for eligible clients to trade without pre-funding could be especially relevant to institutions that manage capital across several trading venues and counterparties. Pre-funding requires a trader to deposit cash or digital assets before an order can be placed; a credit-based arrangement can reduce the amount of capital sitting idle in advance, subject to a firms eligibility assessment and risk terms.
Flexible settlement dates offer another feature commonly sought in OTC markets. Rather than forcing all parties into one standard settlement cycle, a transaction can be structured to align with internal treasury, custody or reconciliation procedures. Blockchain.com said clients can choose schedules that match their operational requirements.
Those features do not eliminate counterparty or settlement risk. They instead shift more of the transaction process into a bilateral relationship between the client and Blockchain.com, placing greater weight on credit arrangements, agreed delivery terms and each partys operational controls.
The company said the API is intended to reduce operational complexity by fitting into existing trading infrastructure. For institutions already using order-management or execution-management systems, direct connectivity may reduce manual work associated with requesting quotes, entering trades and recording executions across separate communication channels.
Private-market activity provides context
The launch arrives as electronic tools play a larger role in private digital-asset markets. Finery Markets reported that private spot trading volume rose 109% in the previous year and increased a further 43% in the first three months of this year. Its report also found that stablecoins represented 78% of private spot deals during the prior year.
Stablecoins share of those transactions points to their role as a settlement and liquidity instrument for institutions moving between crypto positions and dollar-linked value. For an OTC desk, supporting stablecoins alongside cryptocurrencies can help accommodate clients that want to settle trades without relying exclusively on conventional bank-payment windows.
Blockchain.com did not provide API-specific volume expectations or name early users. It also did not say whether clients would have access to streaming prices, request-for-quote workflows, derivatives execution, or only spot-market transactions through the new interface.
Expansion of institutional prime brokerage
The service sits within Blockchain.coms institutional prime brokerage business, which the company said serves more than 1,500 institutional clients. That business includes OTC spot and derivatives trading, custody, staking and yield-generation services.
Combining those functions under one institutional offering gives Blockchain.com an opportunity to serve clients through more stages of their trading cycle: execution, asset storage and post-trade asset deployment. The API adds an electronic entry point to that structure, while the companys desk services remain available for transactions that do not fit a standardized automated workflow.
Blockchain.com said it has operated since 2011, supported more than 95 million wallets and 44 million confirmed accounts, processed more than $1.1 trillion in crypto transactions, and operates in more than 70 jurisdictions. Those figures are company-reported and cover the firms broader business, rather than its institutional API product specifically.
For institutional clients, the practical test will be whether the new connection delivers dependable quotes, settlement choices and integration with the systems they already use. Blockchain.coms move gives its OTC operation a more automated route for capturing that flow while retaining the desk-based service model used for more tailored transactions.
