Bitcoin’s slide to an intraday low of $79,775 has pushed the market into a closely watched support area between $78,000 and $80,500, after the cryptocurrency fell below the previous week’s $80,400 low. The move strengthens the case that BTC’s rally from early July has entered a corrective phase, while leaving open the possibility of a short-term rebound if buyers can defend the current range.
BTC was trading near $82,600 following a mild weekend recovery, placing it above the lower edge of the support zone but below the first major resistance area at $84,500 to $85,500. The next test is whether the rebound can develop into a durable base or whether sellers regain control and force a retest of $79,775 and potentially $78,000.
The decline follows a nearly three-month advance that carried Bitcoin from $57,820 on July 1 to $87,399 on Sept. 21. Since that peak, BTC has fallen for 27 trading days, with the maximum drawdown reaching 8.72%, according to the technical analysis. That is a relatively contained retreat by Bitcoin standards, but the break beneath the prior weekly low has made the current support range more consequential.
Bitcoin tests the lower end of its recent range
On the four-hour chart, Bitcoin’s fall from $87,399 has taken the form of several overlapping legs rather than a single sharp liquidation move. Such price action can point to a market searching for direction, with buyers and sellers repeatedly contesting the same levels.
The analysis identified weakening downside momentum through two separate four-hour indicators, including a divergence between earlier and later lows and a warning signal near a previous pivot. In practical terms, that setup suggests bears may be losing momentum as Bitcoin approaches support, even though the broader correction remains intact.
A rebound would need to clear $84,500 to $85,500 before the market can challenge the more substantial $87,500 to $90,000 resistance zone. Bitcoin’s September peak sits within that upper range, meaning any recovery toward those levels would face traders who bought near the top and may look to exit near breakeven.
If the $78,000 to $80,500 area fails, the next support zone sits between $74,500 and $76,000. Below that, the analysis marks $69,100 to $70,500 as a deeper level where demand could emerge. The gap between these ranges illustrates why a clean break of $78,000 could change the tone of the correction quickly.
A position monitor referenced in the analysis described Bitcoin as having broken above a “bull-bear channel” before entering a retest phase. The medium-term approach attached to that reading was to remain out of the market until price direction becomes clearer, rather than treating the initial weekend bounce as confirmation of a new uptrend.
Short-term plans hinge on confirmation
The outlined short-term strategy is conditional rather than directional. A long setup would require Bitcoin to stabilize inside the $78,000 to $80,500 zone and produce confirming bottom signals. A bearish setup would depend on a rejection from resistance, particularly around $84,500 to $85,500 or $87,500 to $90,000, alongside evidence that upside momentum is fading.
Both approaches limit exposure to 30% and use predefined exits. The framework relies on 30-minute to 60-minute charts for range trades, reflecting the fact that Bitcoin remains between major support and resistance rather than trending cleanly in either direction.
The risk rules proposed in the material call for a stop-loss at entry, followed by progressive adjustments as a position moves into profit. After a 1% gain, the stop would move to breakeven; after a 2% gain, it would lock in a 1% profit. Each additional 1% advance would raise the trailing stop by another 1%.
Such rules are designed for volatile range conditions, where quick reversals can erase gains. They do not account for abrupt news-driven moves, which can cause prices to gap through technical levels.
HYPE approaches a critical $75.10 level
Hyperliquid’s HYPE token has followed a similarly weak short-term pattern, falling to $76.07 after breaking below a rising channel. The decline reached the $75 to $77 downside target zone identified in the analysis, following HYPE’s Sept. 23 high of $97.98.
On the four-hour chart, HYPE’s decline was characterized as a five-leg move with an overlapping consolidation range in the middle. Selling momentum during the latest leg appeared weaker than during the initial drop into that range, a pattern that can precede stabilization if buyers defend the recent low.
The immediate level to watch is $75.10. Holding above it would keep the possibility of a rebound in play, with resistance at $80 to $82, followed by $88 to $90 and $95 to $100. A sustained break below $75.10 would raise the risk of a larger weekly-scale correction, with the next support area mapped at $68 to $70.
The proposed HYPE approach is more cautious than the Bitcoin plan: light long exposure would only be considered if the token remains above $75.10 and starts rising. If that level breaks, the preferred response is to wait rather than attempt to catch a falling market.
Flows and leverage add to the caution
The material also cited net outflows of $228 million from public Bitcoin funds last week, a sign of weaker near-term demand through listed products. Separately, open interest across the cryptocurrency market was estimated at $52 billion, indicating that substantial leveraged positions remain active.
High open interest can amplify price moves when traders are forced to close positions, particularly around heavily watched support and resistance levels. Bitcoin’s current range therefore has implications beyond spot buying and selling: a break below support or a sharp recovery through resistance could trigger liquidations in derivatives markets.
On-chain analyst Willy Woo has argued that stronger Bitcoin buying opportunities tend to emerge when global web-search interest reaches depressed levels. That approach favors holding cash through uncertain conditions and waiting for evidence of a clearer trend rather than committing heavily during a contested correction.
For now, Bitcoin’s ability to remain above $78,000 to $80,500 and HYPE’s defense of $75.10 will determine whether the latest declines become a platform for recovery or the opening stage of a deeper retreat.
