Bitcoin stays below $80000 as Nasdaq falls

2026-10-30 16:25

Bitcoin traded near $77,000 at the U.S. market open on Friday, remaining below the $80,000 level as a sharp sell-off in technology stocks spread across risk-sensitive markets. BTC/USD was down 1.1% on the day after touching its lowest price since Sept. 18, placing the cryptocurrency on course for its weakest October in more than a decade.

The decline unfolded alongside a 2.5% fall in the Nasdaq Composite, which traded near 25,500, and a drop in gold to $3,891 per ounce, a price last seen in October 2025. Bitcoin and gold do not always move together, but their simultaneous weakness pointed to broad deleveraging rather than a move confined to digital assets.

Technology stocks were the immediate focus. Intel shares fell almost 30% at Friday's open after the chipmaker warned that fourth-quarter sales would come in below market expectations. The reaction showed how quickly concerns about corporate spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure can affect the companies expected to supply that buildout.

Technology guidance weighs on risk markets

The Nasdaq's move back to levels last seen on Aug. 3 reflected pressure across large technology names rather than an isolated reaction to Intel. Recent earnings guidance has raised questions about whether the spending required to build AI systems will produce returns quickly enough to justify current valuations.

JPMorgan said an equity rotation was likely to continue as technology stocks weighed on broader indices, according to CNBC. The bank cited renewed concern over AI monetization, referring to the ability of companies to turn major investment in computing infrastructure, data centers and advanced chips into sustained revenue.

That debate has become relevant to Bitcoin because the cryptocurrency has often traded in step with high-growth technology shares during periods when traders are reducing exposure to volatile assets. Friday's session reinforced that connection: pressure began with technology guidance and extended to equities, Bitcoin and gold.

QCP Capital said the macroeconomic backdrop, concerns around the technology sector and the security incident at Binance had combined to create a period of heightened market repricing. The firm said upcoming technology-sector guidance on capital expenditure would remain a key measure for assessing AI infrastructure spending and expectations for profitability.

Corporate plans for chip purchases, data-center construction and related equipment matter beyond the technology sector. Lower spending forecasts could signal a slower pace of AI-related investment, while stronger forecasts could ease fears that companies are cutting back after committing large sums to new computing capacity.

Binance theft adds a crypto-specific risk

Crypto markets were also absorbing the fallout from a reported theft at Binance, the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange by trading volume. Binance said it would cover losses with its own capital after $6.3 billion in coins and tokens were stolen.

A Binance spokesperson said the company had $5 billion in matching tokens available. The exchange's pledge to use its own balance sheet placed its financial capacity and operational response at the center of market attention, particularly as traders were already reacting to falling technology shares.

Large exchange breaches can affect market conditions in several ways. They can prompt traders to reassess counterparty exposure, increase caution around keeping assets on trading platforms and complicate liquidity conditions if market participants alter positions quickly. The effects vary depending on the assets involved, the exchange's response and whether affected balances can be restored without disrupting normal withdrawals and trading.

The Binance incident arrived during a session already defined by risk reduction, making it harder to separate crypto-specific selling from the wider move in equities. QCP Capital's assessment treated the breach as one of several pressures confronting the market rather than the sole cause of Bitcoin's decline.

Bitcoin faces its weakest October since 2014

At roughly $77,000, Bitcoin was on track to finish October down 7.7%, according to CoinGlass data. That would mark its poorest October performance since 2014, ending a month that has historically produced stronger returns for the asset.

The October decline also leaves Bitcoin well below the $80,000 threshold that traders had watched during the latest downturn. Round-number levels can attract attention because they often become focal points for derivatives positioning and short-term sentiment, though they do not guarantee support or resistance on their own.

The supplied market analysis identified a range between $73,500 and $76,700 as a nearby price area under scrutiny, with $70,000 viewed as the next major round-number level if selling intensifies. Such technical levels are typically used to map areas where buying or selling interest may emerge; they are not reliable forecasts of where Bitcoin must trade next.

The immediate market picture is shaped by two separate tests: whether the technology sell-off stabilizes after weaker guidance, and whether Binance can contain the operational and confidence effects of the theft. Bitcoin's October performance shows that the cryptocurrency has remained exposed to both forces, with broader risk appetite and crypto-market infrastructure stress converging in the same trading period.
