Bitcoin slips below $82000 after core CPI rise

2026-10-14 17:33

Bitcoin fell below $82,000 on Wednesday after U.S. September inflation data showed core consumer prices rising 0.3% for the month, reviving concerns that the Federal Reserve may keep borrowing costs elevated for longer. The largest cryptocurrency was down about 2% at the time of publication, while Ethereum, XRP and Solana each declined by nearly 3%.

The sell-off placed Bitcoin back in the $81,000–$82,000 area that traders have treated as a near-term support zone. The move followed a broader reassessment of interest-rate expectations after the core Consumer Price Index, which excludes food and energy costs, came in stronger than markets had hoped.

Higher underlying inflation can limit the Federal Reserve’s room to ease monetary policy. That generally supports Treasury yields and the U.S. dollar, conditions that have often pressured risk-sensitive assets including cryptocurrencies.

Inflation data puts rate expectations back in focus

Thomas Wu, chief financial officer of bitcoin-backed lender Ledn, said the 0.3% core CPI reading had put the prospect of an October rate increase back into market discussions, despite signs of cooling in the labor market.

“Higher rates” would increase borrowing costs across the economy, Wu said, though he added that spreads on bitcoin-backed credit had remained relatively stable. Bitcoin-backed lending allows holders to borrow against their BTC rather than sell it, making funding costs and collateral values particularly relevant when prices decline.

The inflation release arrived after a softer employment report, according to the market commentary provided. The economy added 29,000 jobs last month and the unemployment rate rose to 4.2%, figures that had previously supported expectations of easier monetary policy.

Dori, an executive at Sygnum Bank, warned that a sharper slowdown in economic growth could weigh on crypto alongside other asset classes. The tension between persistent inflation and weakening employment data has become a difficult backdrop for markets: inflation argues for restrictive policy, while slower growth raises concerns about corporate earnings, household demand and credit conditions.

Bitcoin returns to a closely watched support range

Matt Mena, senior crypto research strategist at 21Shares, said Bitcoin had already lost the $85,000 level last week before returning to the $81,000–$82,000 range. That places the current price action around a technical area traders will watch for signs of either renewed demand or a deeper decline.

Mena said a recovery above $85,000 could open a path toward $90,000 if macroeconomic uncertainty fades. His outlook also cited strong quarterly inflows into cryptocurrency exchange-traded funds, which he said had provided support for Ether and Solana.

ETF flows can matter because spot products give institutions and other market participants a regulated vehicle for gaining cryptocurrency exposure without directly holding tokens. Sustained inflows can add a source of demand, though they do not insulate crypto prices from sudden shifts in rate expectations or wider market sentiment.

Mena said Ether had been consolidating near $2,500 and could target a range between $2,800 and $3,000 if conditions improve. He placed Solana’s near-term focus around $130 by the end of the quarter. Both assets declined alongside Bitcoin on Wednesday, underscoring how quickly macroeconomic shocks can override token-specific narratives in the short term.

$80,000 becomes the immediate line for bitcoin

Paul Howard, senior director at Wincent, said the stronger inflation data had reduced market expectations tied to supportive macro catalysts. He projected that Bitcoin could trade between $80,000 and $88,000 in the near term, with $75,000 becoming a potential downside level if the market breaks decisively below $80,000.

That framework leaves Bitcoin caught between a nearby technical floor and resistance around the mid-$80,000s. A durable move through either side would likely depend less on blockchain activity than on incoming economic data and the resulting changes in bond yields, the dollar and Federal Reserve expectations.

Bitcoin had gained roughly 12% in the previous month, according to the market account provided, showing that the recent decline followed a period of substantial upward momentum. Such gains can leave prices more exposed when an economic release causes traders to reduce risk quickly, particularly in a market where leveraged positions can accelerate both rallies and pullbacks.

The immediate test is whether Bitcoin can hold above the low-$80,000 range while markets absorb the inflation result. A recovery toward $85,000 would ease pressure on the recent support zone, while a break below $80,000 would shift attention to the lower targets identified by Howard.
