Bitcoin slides to three week low

2026-10-15 12:20

Bitcoin fell to a three-week low of $80,154 on Thursday as a sharp sell-off in South Korean technology shares and a stronger-than-expected U.S. inflation reading pressured risk assets. BTC/USD reached the level on Bitstamp, bringing the market back near the $80,000 area last seen on Sept. 20.

The decline coincided with a 7.5% drop in South Korea’s Korea Composite Stock Price Index, or KOSPI, which closed at 5,554 points. The Korea Exchange benchmark has lost 15.5% so far this week, with large semiconductor companies bearing much of the selling pressure.

Bitcoin’s move showed the limits of its short-term separation from traditional markets during periods of financial stress. When equity losses accelerate, traders often reduce exposure across volatile holdings rather than treating cryptocurrencies as a standalone market. The result can be selling in Bitcoin even without a crypto-specific trigger.

Korean chip shares lead the equity decline

SK Hynix dropped 11% on Thursday, while Samsung Electronics lost 9.5%. The two companies sit at the centre of South Korea’s technology sector and are closely tied to global demand for memory chips, smartphones, servers and artificial-intelligence infrastructure.

The KOSPI’s 200-day moving average, a closely watched long-term technical indicator, fell to 5,450 points during the rout. That was its lowest level since late July and placed the index near an area traders may watch for evidence of either stabilisation or another leg lower.

Recent market coverage has pointed to several overlapping pressures on South Korean equities, including concern about debt linked to AI-related spending, foreign capital outflows and increasingly tough competition from Chinese companies. Those issues have weighed particularly heavily on technology names whose valuations had benefited from expectations of sustained AI hardware demand.

Kim Seok-hwan, an analyst at Mirae Asset Securities, said volatility was likely to persist in the near term. The warning arrives before a closely watched earnings period for the country’s largest chipmakers.

SK Hynix is scheduled to report third-quarter results on Oct. 28, followed by Samsung Electronics on Oct. 29. Samsung is expected to confirm quarterly sales of 195 trillion won, or about $145 billion, alongside operating profit of roughly 107 trillion won, equivalent to $80 billion. The scale of those expected figures leaves little room for disappointment if markets are already reassessing the durability of AI-driven semiconductor demand.

U.S. inflation adds pressure to rate expectations

The equity sell-off was compounded by U.S. inflation data released Wednesday. September’s Consumer Price Index rose 3.7% from a year earlier, above expectations and high enough to prompt a reassessment of interest-rate assumptions.

Higher inflation can alter the outlook for financial conditions because it reduces the scope for central banks to lower borrowing costs quickly. Assets whose valuations depend heavily on abundant liquidity, including growth stocks and cryptocurrencies, tend to be sensitive to those changes.

QCP Capital said markets were weighing whether the upside inflation surprise would produce further monetary tightening or force policymakers to adjust their approach because of stress in credit markets. That uncertainty has left traders navigating two competing risks: inflation that proves stubborn, and financial conditions that become restrictive enough to slow economic activity sharply.

Bitcoin’s retreat toward $80,000 came as those concerns surfaced across asset classes. The move does not establish a direct causal link between the CPI release and the cryptocurrency’s decline, but the timing placed Bitcoin within a broader repricing of risk following the data.

Oil reverses despite Strait of Hormuz incident

Oil prices also moved lower Thursday after climbing in the previous session, when energy costs contributed to inflation concerns. West Texas Intermediate traded below $95 per barrel, down 0.5% on the day, while Brent crude fell 2.2% to $103.70 per barrel.

The weakness followed the sinking of a Singapore-registered oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, a major shipping route for global energy exports. Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority described the incident as “unjustifiable.”

A decline in crude prices following a supply-security shock suggests that concern over future demand was competing with fears of disruption. In a market focused only on immediate supply risk, such an event would ordinarily support oil prices. The reversal instead indicated that traders were also factoring in the possibility of weaker consumption if global growth slows.

Lower energy prices could eventually ease inflation pressure if sustained, but Thursday’s trading offered no immediate relief to risk markets. The drop came after CPI data had already raised concern that price pressures remain difficult to bring under control.

Bitcoin approaches a widely watched price zone

Bitcoin’s return to the $80,000 area puts the focus on whether the market can hold above the Sept. 20 low or whether selling in equities and other risk assets continues to spill over into digital assets.

The price level has psychological as well as technical relevance. Round-number thresholds often concentrate buy and sell orders, while a previous low can become a reference point for traders assessing whether a pullback remains contained or is developing into a broader correction.

The next direction may depend less on cryptocurrency-specific developments than on whether South Korean technology shares find support, how markets absorb upcoming chipmaker earnings and whether incoming U.S. economic data changes expectations for monetary policy. For now, Bitcoin is trading in an environment where inflation, equity volatility and concerns over global demand are reinforcing caution across markets.
