Bitcoin mining margins tighten as Hashprice nears lows

2026-10-14 08:05

Bitcoin mining margins tightened in October, with a 270 TH/s machine producing roughly $10.54 in daily gross revenue before electricity, pool charges and other operating costs. At prevailing network economics, the same machine would turn unprofitable at power prices above about 11.8 cents per kilowatt-hour, based on Hashrate Index data and a 2% pool fee.

Luxor’s Hashrate Index placed Bitcoin Hashprice — expected daily revenue for one petahash per second of mining power — at $39.05 per PH/s per day. A 270 TH/s machine represents 0.27 PH/s, producing the $10.54 estimate before deductions.

Bitcoin traded near $83,750 on Oct. 13 after falling close to $81,000 during the session, according to CoinGecko. The price level offered some support to miner revenue, yet it came alongside a network hash rate near 1,014 EH/s and a projected mining difficulty of 132.72 trillion, according to Hashrate Index. Both measures indicate intense competition for the fixed block reward.

Electricity costs decide whether modern machines remain profitable

The Bitmain Antminer S21 XP illustrates how quickly power rates can determine a mining operation’s economics. Hashrate Index lists the model at 270 TH/s, with efficiency of 13.5 joules per terahash and power consumption of about 3,645 watts.

Operating continuously, the machine would consume approximately 87.48 kilowatt-hours daily. At an electricity rate of 5 cents per kWh, its daily power bill would be about $4.37. At 6 cents, the cost rises to $5.25; at 9 cents it reaches $7.87; and at 12 cents it climbs to about $10.50.

After a 2% pool fee, the machine’s daily mining revenue falls from $10.54 to roughly $10.33. That leaves estimated daily profit of $5.96 at 5-cent electricity, $5.08 at 6 cents, and $2.46 at 9 cents. At 12 cents per kWh, the model produces a small daily loss of about 16 cents before considering repair costs, facility overhead, financing, labor or hardware depreciation.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration reported an average industrial electricity price of 9.77 cents per kWh in July 2026, up 4.7% from a year earlier. That national average does not represent the rates paid by large mining sites, which often use specialized contracts or operate near low-cost generation, but it places many smaller or less efficiently supplied operations close to the narrow-profit zone.

At the current Hashprice, the implied electricity break-even rate for the S21 XP is about 11.8 cents per kWh. The calculation divides $10.33 in revenue after pool fees by 87.48 kWh of daily consumption. Any sustained move above that power cost would require higher Bitcoin prices, stronger transaction-fee income or lower network difficulty to preserve profitability.

Difficulty could cut revenue again

Near-term mining revenue faces another pressure point from a projected difficulty increase. Mempool.space estimated the next Bitcoin mining difficulty adjustment at approximately 4.82%, with 552 blocks remaining before the change.

Difficulty adjusts roughly every two weeks to keep block production near Bitcoin’s target schedule. When difficulty rises, an individual miner receives a smaller expected share of network block rewards unless it adds more hash rate or deploys more efficient machines.

If Bitcoin’s price and transaction fees remain unchanged, a 4.82% difficulty increase would reduce the S21 XP’s $10.54 gross daily revenue to around $10.04. Electricity consumption would remain near 87.48 kWh a day, reducing profitability at every power-price level.

The calculation also shows how sharply a miner’s Bitcoin-price break-even point varies by energy cost. Using estimated net production of around 0.0001267 BTC daily, the machine could cover electricity at Bitcoin prices near $34,500 with 5-cent power, $41,400 at 6 cents, and $62,100 at 9 cents. At 12-cent electricity, the break-even Bitcoin price is roughly $82,900.

Low fees leave miners dependent on the subsidy

Mining revenue remains dominated by Bitcoin’s block subsidy, which was cut to 3.125 BTC in the April 2024 halving. With about 144 blocks produced per day, the subsidy creates roughly 450 BTC in new daily supply before transaction fees.

Transaction fees have provided limited relief. The Block reported that daily Bitcoin fees fell to about $300,000 at one point, representing less than 1% of total miner revenue. With fee income subdued, mining companies have little buffer when difficulty rises or Bitcoin declines.

CoinShares’ second-quarter 2026 mining report showed how far Hashprice had fallen from prior highs. The firm recorded a record low of $27.70 per PH/s per day in June, compared with roughly $63 at the July 2025 peak. October’s $39.05 level represents an improvement from that trough, but remains far below the conditions that supported faster hardware payback periods last year.

CoinShares estimated the weighted average cash cost for listed miners at approximately $75,500 per Bitcoin. That figure measures company-level cash economics rather than the direct electricity cost of a single machine, and can include differences in energy arrangements, fleet efficiency and operating structure.

AI data centers offer a higher-revenue use for power capacity

The pressure on mining margins has reinforced public miners’ move toward artificial-intelligence computing and data-center hosting. CoinShares estimated that 1 megawatt of power capacity could generate about $1.5 million in annual revenue when used for AI-related infrastructure, compared with about $500,000 from Bitcoin mining under its assumptions.

That revenue comparison helps explain why companies with large power sites are increasingly treating mining facilities as adaptable data-center assets rather than dedicating all available capacity to Bitcoin production.

IREN provides one example of the transition. Benzinga reported that the company generated $578.2 million in mining revenue in the fiscal year ended June 30, while AI cloud-services revenue rose to $128.8 million from $16.4 million a year earlier. Total revenue reached $707 million, up from $501 million, although IREN recorded a $702.6 million net loss that included $638.8 million of non-cash impairment charges, mainly connected to retired mining equipment.

For operators retaining a mining focus, the October figures put particular weight on energy procurement, hardware efficiency and difficulty management. A modern machine can remain cash-flow positive with access to low-cost power, but its margin shrinks rapidly as electricity approaches industrial-average rates and the network adds more competing hash power.
