Bitcoin holds near 77000 after Binance hack

2026-10-30 11:55

Bitcoin recovered above $77,000 on Friday after briefly falling to $76,320, as traders weighed reports of a $6.3 billion security breach at Binance alongside a sharp sell-off in US technology shares. The move followed a punishing 24 hours for leveraged crypto positions, with CoinGlass recording $1.56 billion in liquidations, including $1.31 billion from long trades.

BTC/USD had held above $76,000 after the initial decline, according to TradingView data, before regaining part of the lost ground. The stabilization came after Binance said it would cover user losses through its Secure Asset Fund for Users, known as SAFU, and other corporate resources. That assurance appeared to reduce immediate concerns that the incident could trigger losses across customer accounts or force a disorderly unwind of positions elsewhere in the market.

Binance described the attack as complex and said it involved more than one security breach. The reported size of the loss made the event a major test of the exchange's risk reserves, particularly during a period when crypto prices and technology stocks were already moving lower together.

Long liquidations intensified Bitcoin's slide

The liquidation figures show that the decline hit traders positioned for further gains far harder than those betting on lower prices. Long positions accounted for roughly 84% of all liquidations recorded by CoinGlass over the 24-hour period.

Liquidations occur when trading platforms close leveraged positions because a trader no longer has sufficient collateral to support the bet. In a fast decline, those forced closures can add selling pressure as platforms sell collateral or close long exposure into an already falling market.

Bitcoin's drop toward $76,320 pushed the market through levels that had supported prices earlier in the week. The subsequent return above $77,000 suggests that buyers emerged below the $76,000 area, though the scale of long liquidations indicates that leverage had built up before the sell-off.

A recovery from a sharp intraday low does not by itself establish a durable reversal. Bitcoin remained well below its 20-day simple moving average of $81,324, the short-term trend measure cited in the market data. Reclaiming that level would require a more sustained recovery than Friday's initial bounce.

Binance's compensation pledge limited immediate contagion fears

Binance's commitment to use SAFU and company funds placed a ceiling on the most immediate concern following the reported breach: whether affected customers would face direct losses or whether the exchange would need to impose restrictions that could spread stress across crypto markets.

SAFU is Binance's emergency reserve intended to cover customer losses in exceptional events. The exchange had previously moved the fund into more liquid assets, a structure that would make it easier to deploy during a security incident than reserves held in less readily tradable tokens.

The pledge does not erase the operational questions raised by a large attack, including how the breach occurred and whether further security measures will affect platform activity. Yet it gave the market a clearer indication that the exchange expected to absorb the financial impact rather than pass it on to users.

That distinction was especially relevant after liquidations surged. A major exchange disruption can amplify losses beyond the initial event if traders cannot access collateral, close positions, or transfer assets during volatile trading. Binance's statement helped ease that particular pressure even as risk appetite remained weak.

Tech stock losses added to risk-off trading

The crypto decline unfolded alongside a sell-off in US technology stocks, reinforcing the recent tendency for Bitcoin to trade in step with broader appetite for risk assets during abrupt market moves.

Alphabet shares fell 13% to $282 after the company missed earnings and revenue expectations, reaching their lowest level since April. Intel shares also came under pressure, falling 26% in premarket trading Friday after the chipmaker issued a weaker fourth-quarter outlook despite reporting third-quarter revenue and earnings above estimates.

Intel forecast fourth-quarter sales of $15 billion to $16 billion, below analysts' projections of $17 billion to $18 billion. The reaction to those outlooks showed how quickly traders were cutting exposure to companies facing uncertainty around growth and spending expectations.

Bitcoin does not always move in lockstep with equities, and the Binance security event gave crypto markets their own catalyst for selling. The overlap nevertheless created a difficult backdrop for a rapid recovery, since both markets were responding to a reduction in willingness to hold higher-volatility assets.

Technical measures show oversold conditions, not a confirmed bottom

Several short-term indicators moved toward levels associated with stretched selling. Bitcoin closed below its lower Bollinger Band on Thursday, according to the supplied TradingView readings, a condition last seen on June 25 when BTC/USD traded near $57,000.

Bollinger Bands measure how far a price has moved from its recent average. A close below the lower band means Bitcoin was trading more than two standard deviations beneath its 20-day moving average, signaling an unusually sharp departure from its recent trend.

Bitcoin's relative strength index, or RSI, fell to 34.7 on Friday, its lowest reading since June 30. RSI is a momentum measure on a 0-to-100 scale, with readings below 30 commonly viewed as oversold. At 34.7, Bitcoin was approaching that threshold but had not crossed it.

The four-hour chart also showed a bullish divergence: Bitcoin made a lower price low while the RSI formed a higher swing low. Traders often watch that pattern for signs that downside momentum is fading. It can support a rebound, but it does not guarantee one, particularly when price remains below its key short-term average and the broader market is reacting to a major exchange-security event.

The immediate levels in focus are the $76,000 area that held during Friday's sell-off and the 20-day moving average near $81,324. Holding above the former would suggest the initial liquidation wave has been absorbed; recovering the latter would put Bitcoin back above the trend line it lost during the decline.
