Bitcoin falls below $82000 after rally fails

2026-10-22 11:07

Bitcoin fell nearly 3% on Thursday, retreating below $82,000 after an unsuccessful move toward $85,000 and placing the market’s attention back on a closely watched support range between $80,000 and $81,500.

BTC/USD traded near $81,500 after giving back the previous day’s advance, according to TradingView data. The decline followed a run toward roughly $84,840, where Bitcoin again failed to break through a descending resistance line visible on the three-day chart. That rejection preserved a pattern of lower highs, leaving the market caught between weakening upside momentum and a support area associated with US spot Bitcoin ETF buyers.

The pullback arrived alongside a broader retreat in risk-sensitive assets. South Korea’s tech-heavy KOSPI Composite Index closed down 3.52% on Thursday, extending pressure that had already pushed the index to its lowest level since late July last week. Bitcoin has often traded alongside major technology shares during periods when traders reduce exposure to assets perceived as more volatile.

Leverage grew before the reversal

The decline also followed a rapid rise in Bitcoin derivatives positioning. CoinGlass recorded Bitcoin open interest at $55.95 billion late Tuesday, after a 4.5% increase over 24 hours. The figure was the highest since Sept. 25.

Open interest measures the total value of outstanding futures and perpetual-contract positions. A rising figure can reflect stronger conviction among traders, but it can also leave the market more exposed to abrupt moves when prices reverse and leveraged positions are forced to close.

In this case, the increase in open interest coincided with Bitcoin’s failed move toward $85,000. The sequence suggests that derivatives activity expanded during the attempted breakout, only for the spot price to reverse before a sustained move above resistance could take hold.

A rejection from a downward-sloping trend line does not by itself determine the next major direction for Bitcoin. It does, though, leave the market without a confirmed recovery from its recent sequence of lower highs. Bitcoin would need to reclaim the low-$80,000 area and then overcome the resistance near its latest peak to shift that technical picture.

ETF cost basis puts focus on $80,000

The $80,000 to $81,500 range has drawn attention because it aligns with estimates of the aggregate cost basis for US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds. Cost basis refers to the average price at which holdings were acquired.

When market prices approach that level, ETF holders as a group are nearer to break-even. The zone can become relevant for sentiment and trading flows, particularly after a sharp decline, because it represents an area where recent buyers may reassess their positions.

That does not guarantee the range will hold. A cost-basis estimate is different from a fixed buy order or a formal price floor. Yet Bitcoin’s return toward the band gives the market a concrete level to monitor after its failure near $85,000.

A sustained break below $80,000 would place more attention on whether ETF-related demand can absorb selling pressure. A rebound from the zone, meanwhile, would suggest that buyers remain willing to defend the area despite the broader weakness in risk markets.

Tesla spending outlook adds to risk-market concerns

Tesla’s third-quarter results added another data point to the market’s focus on technology-sector spending. The company reported quarterly revenue of $28.05 billion, slightly below the $28.13 billion estimate compiled by Bloomberg. Tesla reported capital expenditure of $4.73 billion, compared with the $7.96 billion figure expected by Bloomberg.

During Tesla’s earnings call, Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk said capital expenditure would rise through 2028. He described current spending as “a little lower than we anticipated” and said expenditure would become “noticeable in the tens of billions in ’28.”

The comments came as markets assess the financial demands of artificial intelligence infrastructure, electric-vehicle production and other capital-intensive technology projects. Large spending plans can support growth expectations, but they also sharpen scrutiny of cash generation, corporate borrowing and valuations across technology shares.

Bitcoin does not respond mechanically to any single earnings report or stock-market move. Its slide occurred within a wider risk-off session, though, and the timing reinforces how quickly macroeconomic concerns can influence cryptocurrency trading when leverage is elevated.

A narrower range takes shape

Bitcoin now faces a more defined short-term setup: resistance near the latest failed push toward $85,000 and support centered on $80,000 to $81,500. The gap between those levels is relatively narrow for an asset that had just seen derivatives exposure reach a one-month high.

The immediate test is whether the ETF cost-basis zone attracts enough demand to stabilize the market after Thursday’s decline. If it does, Bitcoin could remain range-bound while traders reduce the leverage accumulated during the attempted breakout. If the zone gives way, the rejection near $85,000 would look less like a brief pause and more like another confirmation that sellers remain in control of the current structure.
