Bitcoin faces resistance near 85000 level

2026-10-29 11:00

Bitcoin faced a closely watched resistance zone between $84,000 and $85,000 after onchain data showed that 864,520 BTC, equal to 4.3% of the circulating supply, last moved while prices traded in that range on Nov. 22, 2025. The concentration gives the level unusual weight: a large number of holders have an onchain transaction history near the current market area, creating a potential source of selling when Bitcoin revisits it.

Glassnode linked most of the movement recorded that day to a single large holder redistributing coins across multiple wallets. That detail limits how confidently the activity can be read as broad market buying at $84,000 to $85,000. Yet the transaction cluster remains visible in Bitcoin's realized-price data, which maps the prices at which coins last changed hands onchain.

Price action over the following 11 months has repeatedly reinforced the area's relevance. Bitcoin bounced from the band on Dec. 1 and Dec. 18, then failed to regain it on Jan. 31 before falling roughly 20% in the days that followed. The same range later restrained advances in May, September and October, including one move that reached approximately $87,400.

Bitcoin managed five daily closes above $85,000 during that period, but never held the level for more than three consecutive daily sessions. That pattern suggests the market has repeatedly found demand below the range while struggling to establish sustained acceptance above it.

a dense cluster of higher-cost holdings

The resistance case is strengthened by a separate Glassnode breakdown of long-term holder supply. The analytics firm defines long-term holders as entities that have retained Bitcoin for at least 155 days. This cohort held about 4 million BTC with a realized cost basis between $85,000 and $118,000, according to the data cited in the supplied material.

More than half of those coins were acquired above Bitcoin's prevailing market price, Glassnode reported. The holdings were largely last moved during 2025, placing a substantial share of the cohort in a position where a rebound into the $85,000-to-$118,000 range could reduce or erase unrealized losses.

That does not establish that each holder will sell at breakeven. Onchain cost-basis analysis identifies where coins last moved, rather than the motives of the people or institutions behind them. Coins may have changed ownership through internal transfers, custody arrangements or over-the-counter activity. Even so, dense realized-price bands often become areas of attention because they identify where many market participants may reassess positions.

Long-term holder behavior adds another layer. Their spent output profit ratio, or SOPR, stood at 0.99 in the data referenced by the article. SOPR compares the value of coins when they are spent with the value when they were last moved. A reading below 1 means that, in aggregate, the cohort's spent coins were transferred at a loss relative to their prior onchain price.

A 0.99 reading is only slightly below breakeven, indicating that long-term holders who were moving coins were, collectively, realizing modest losses rather than taking substantial profits. If Bitcoin returns to the $84,000-to-$85,000 zone, holders with a cost basis near that level may face a practical decision between reducing exposure near breakeven and continuing to hold through another period of volatility.

$87,400 remains the higher test

The price history outlined in the supplied data places $87,400 above the immediate resistance band as a second technical reference point. Bitcoin has reached that area during prior attempts to move higher, but the limited number of closes above $85,000 shows that intraday moves have not translated into durable control by buyers.

A sustained daily close above the range would not automatically remove the overhang from long-term holder supply, which extends toward $118,000. It would, though, show that bids had absorbed selling around one of the market's most heavily watched realized-price clusters. Repeated failures near $85,000, by contrast, would keep attention on lower support levels, including the $81,500 area identified in the supplied market analysis.

The distinction between a price spike and a sequence of closes is especially relevant in Bitcoin, where short bursts of liquidity can push the market through a level without changing the balance between persistent buyers and sellers. The previous inability to remain above $85,000 for more than three days leaves the market without a long period of price discovery above that threshold.

network metrics diverge from price structure

Bitcoin's mining network has continued to expand even as spot prices encounter resistance. The supplied material said the seven-day average hash rate exceeded 1 zettahash per second in late October 2026. Hash rate measures the computing power directed toward securing the network, and 1 zettahash equals 1 billion terahashes per second.

Mining difficulty also reached a record 140.58 terahashes in the latest adjustment cited by the article. Difficulty automatically changes roughly every two weeks to keep Bitcoin's block-production schedule near its intended pace as miners add or remove computing power.

Rising hash rate and difficulty indicate that miners are collectively committing more equipment and energy to the network, though they do not provide a direct forecast for Bitcoin's price. Mining operators can be responding to hardware upgrades, energy economics, hedging strategies or expectations about future revenue.

At the same time, the supplied article described global internet search interest in Bitcoin as sitting near multiyear lows. Weak retail search activity alongside record mining participation presents a market split: the infrastructure supporting Bitcoin is expanding while public attention appears muted.

For the near term, the onchain evidence places $84,000 to $85,000 at the center of that divide. The range has served as a floor, a ceiling and a concentrated cost-basis zone, making it a more consequential test than a conventional chart level alone.
