Bitcoin drops below 80000 after US PPI surprise

2026-10-15 15:25

Bitcoin briefly fell below $80,000 on Oct. 15 after U.S. wholesale inflation data came in far hotter than expected, extending a risk-off move that had already followed an upside surprise in consumer prices a day earlier. BTC/USD slid as much as 1.8% intraday to its lowest level since Sept. 18 before recovering toward $81,000.

The selling placed bitcoin back below a closely watched support area between $82,500 and $82,800 and shifted attention to lower chart levels near $78,000 and $76,000. The move came as traders reassessed the path for U.S. interest rates after the producer price index showed inflationary pressure persisting at the wholesale level.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that its final-demand PPI rose 6.3% in the 12 months through September, above the 5.3% forecast cited before the release. Core PPI reached 5%, compared with an expected 4.4%. The agency said September’s monthly increase was the largest since a 1.7% rise in March 2022, while the 6.3% annual gain was the highest since December 2022.

Wholesale inflation can feed into consumer prices when businesses pass higher input costs through supply chains. The data therefore added pressure on assets that tend to be sensitive to changing rate expectations, including technology stocks and cryptocurrencies.

Inflation data compounds an already fragile market mood

The PPI report followed a stronger-than-forecast consumer price index reading on Oct. 14. Together, the releases challenged expectations that inflation was moving steadily toward the Federal Reserve’s target and made a near-term easing of financial conditions less certain.

Bitcoin’s decline unfolded alongside weakness in Asian equities, where South Korea’s KOSPI Composite Index fell 7.5% in a technology-led sell-off. That move reinforced a defensive tone across markets, though bitcoin’s losses remained relatively contained compared with the sharp decline in Korean stocks.

Economist Mohamed El-Erian characterized the PPI result as more striking than the prior day’s CPI surprise, reflecting the scale of the miss against forecasts and the renewed evidence of price pressure before goods and services reach consumers.

Treasury trading delivered a less straightforward response. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield was down nearly 3% on the day and reached its lowest level since Sept. 23, despite the inflation surprise. Normally, stronger inflation data can push yields higher as traders demand greater compensation for holding fixed-income securities or reduce expectations of monetary easing.

The declining yield suggests that bond-market positioning was being shaped by more than the latest inflation release. Brooks, who has tracked the relationship between economic surprises and Treasury moves, noted that the 30-day correlation between upside data surprises and daily changes in the 10-year yield had fallen from near 0.6 earlier in 2026 to slightly below zero by the end of August. He attributed the change to growing market focus on the U.S. federal budget deficit rather than individual macroeconomic releases.

That divergence leaves bitcoin exposed to competing forces. Hot inflation data can reduce appetite for speculative assets by keeping the prospect of restrictive policy alive. Falling long-term yields, meanwhile, can ease pressure on valuations if they reflect expectations of slower growth rather than accelerating inflation. Thursday’s price action showed that inflation concerns were the more immediate driver for crypto traders.

Bitcoin loses a recent support zone

Bitcoin’s rebound toward $81,000 did not return it above the $82,500-$82,800 area that had recently acted as support. Technical analyst Kibar said the latest weekly close near $83,700 lacked the strength associated with a breakout and placed bitcoin inside a broad consolidation range between $60,000 and $82,800.

Kibar identified $75,000 as the level that would invalidate a potential rectangle-bottom reversal pattern. Such a pattern develops when an asset trades repeatedly between defined support and resistance levels before attempting to break upward. Bitcoin has not yet delivered the sustained move above the top of that range needed to confirm the setup.

Two longer-term moving averages now provide nearer reference points for the market. Rekt Capital said bitcoin could retest its 21-week exponential moving average near $76,144 and its 50-week exponential moving average near $78,459. An exponential moving average gives greater weight to recent prices than a simple moving average, making it more responsive to short-term changes in market direction.

The two averages have not formed a crossover, according to Rekt Capital. That detail limits the case for treating the latest decline as a confirmed longer-term trend reversal, though a return to either level would test whether buyers remain willing to defend prices below $80,000.

A sustained break beneath the 50-week average would place the $75,000 area under greater scrutiny, particularly because it overlaps with Kibar’s invalidation level for the reversal structure. A recovery above $82,800 would instead return bitcoin to the upper edge of its recent range, while a move beyond the latest weekly close around $83,700 would offer a clearer test of whether demand can absorb the macroeconomic pressure.

For now, bitcoin is trading between an inflation shock on one side and unresolved support levels on the other. The next reaction in Treasury markets, along with whether BTC can reclaim the $82,500-$82,800 zone, is likely to determine whether Thursday’s dip remains a contained retracement or develops into a deeper test of the mid-$70,000 range.
