Bitcoin benefits across AI macro scenarios says Bitwise

2026-10-15 14:16

Bitwise chief investment officer Matt Hougan argues that Bitcoin could retain a role across sharply different AI-driven economic outcomes, from a productivity boom to a debt-fuelled crash that prompts government intervention and monetary expansion.

In a client note published Wednesday, Hougan framed the rapid buildout of AI infrastructure as a macroeconomic force large enough to reshape the investment case for scarce assets. His argument does not depend on a single forecast for artificial intelligence. Instead, it rests on the view that Bitcoin’s fixed supply could appeal in several outcomes: accelerating growth, higher inflation, recession followed by stimulus, or a relatively stable soft landing.

Hougan cautioned that Bitcoin’s path would likely be volatile in any severe downturn. During the COVID-19 panic in early 2020, he noted, Bitcoin fell by roughly 50% within days before recovering as global policymakers deployed extraordinary fiscal and monetary support.

An AI debt reversal could test markets first

Hougan’s most severe scenario centers on a reversal in the financing behind AI data centers, chips and computing capacity. He described a situation in which borrowers funding data-center construction default, leaving insurers and other institutions holding billions of dollars in AI-linked debt exposed to losses.

A shock of that scale could extend beyond technology companies, Hougan wrote, potentially pushing the wider economy into a recession comparable with the 2008 financial crisis. He characterized the U.S. AI buildout as “the biggest infrastructure investment in the history of America,” a claim that underscores how much capital is now being committed to computing capacity, power supply and data-center networks.

Under that scenario, Hougan placed the likelihood of a government bailout at “nearly 100%,” citing AI’s strategic and geopolitical importance. Governments have treated access to advanced computing and semiconductor supply chains as national-security issues, making a hands-off response to a systemic breakdown less likely in his view.

Bitcoin could initially sell off alongside risk assets if credit markets seize up and traders raise cash, Hougan said. The later phase would matter more to his thesis: large-scale intervention, lower borrowing costs and renewed money creation could bolster demand for an asset designed around a predetermined supply schedule.

That sequence would not guarantee a Bitcoin recovery, and Hougan acknowledged that price declines can be abrupt. His point is that the policy response to a major AI-financing collapse could ultimately become part of Bitcoin’s macro backdrop rather than merely a threat to it.

Gartner sees spending nearing $1 trillion in 2026

The scale of the AI investment cycle is already substantial. Gartner projects that global spending on AI-related chips and servers will approach $1 trillion in 2026, according to figures cited in the supplied material. Such spending reflects the race among corporations and governments to secure computing capacity for model training, inference and related services.

The economic challenge is whether revenue generated by AI products can keep pace with the capital required to build and operate the infrastructure. Data centers require expensive processors, networking equipment, land, construction and electricity agreements well before their owners can establish durable returns.

That mismatch is central to Hougan’s downside case. A cyclical pullback in technology spending would not automatically produce a financial crisis. The consequences would depend on how much of the expansion is debt-financed, who ultimately holds that debt, and whether projects produce sufficient cash flow to service their obligations.

A market correction in AI-linked shares would therefore be only one part of the picture. Hougan’s recession scenario requires a broader transmission mechanism into credit markets and the real economy, particularly through defaults and losses at financial institutions.

Inflation and productivity create different routes to Bitcoin demand

Hougan also outlined an alternative recession path: monetary tightening. If the Federal Reserve raises interest rates far enough to push the economy into contraction, the resulting downturn could create conditions similar to the AI-debt reversal, with eventual pressure for easier policy.

If policymakers avoid substantial rate increases and inflation rises instead, he wrote, Bitcoin could draw increased interest as a store of value. That framing follows a familiar Bitcoin market debate: whether the asset functions more like a high-volatility risk asset during periods of financial stress or as protection against currency debasement once liquidity expands.

The optimistic version of the AI story looks very different. Hougan called it “superabundance,” a scenario in which AI drives large productivity gains and significantly lifts GDP. He expects services including software development, legal work, design, pharmaceuticals and medical diagnostics to become cheaper as AI lowers the cost of producing them.

In that environment, Hougan argued, assets that cannot be reproduced as easily could become relatively more valuable. He named waterfront property, exceptional art, gold and Bitcoin as examples of scarce assets whose supply remains limited even if digital and professional services become far cheaper.

The thesis relies less on economic distress than on relative scarcity. If AI makes a growing range of goods and services abundant, assets with supply constraints could command greater attention from traders allocating capital in a higher-growth economy.

A soft landing would leave existing catalysts intact

Hougan’s third scenario is more conventional: roughly 3% economic growth, 4% interest rates and sufficient cash flow from AI projects to keep debts serviced. He described that outcome as “something approaching a soft landing.”

Bitcoin would not need a crisis or an inflation spike to benefit under that outcome, according to Hougan. He pointed to demand channels already developing in the market, including flows into spot Bitcoin ETFs, greater adoption by financial advisers, and allocations by corporate and sovereign balance sheets.

Those channels face their own uncertainties. ETF demand can fluctuate, advisers move cautiously under suitability and portfolio-construction rules, and corporate treasury decisions remain uncommon. Yet a stable economic setting would give these sources of demand room to develop without the disruptions of a credit event or a sharp policy reversal.

Hougan also identified risks capable of undermining his framework, including advances in quantum computing that threaten existing cryptography, a coordinated government crackdown on Bitcoin, and a return to fiscal austerity in Western economies. He did not dismiss any of those possibilities.

His note places Bitcoin’s prospects alongside the AI economy’s biggest unresolved question: whether the vast infrastructure spend produces sustained productivity and revenue, or leaves debt markets carrying the cost of an overbuilt cycle.
