BingX secures MiCA license in Austria

2026-10-19 12:37

BingX’s European entity, MEGE zweite GmbH, has received authorization from Austria’s Financial Market Authority to operate as a crypto-asset service provider under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, positioning the Vienna-based company to offer regulated services across up to 29 European Economic Area countries once passporting arrangements are completed.

The authorization gives BingX EU a regulatory base in Austria from which it can seek to extend services into other EEA markets under MiCA’s passporting system. Rather than applying separately for a full crypto license in each country, an authorized provider can notify its home regulator of planned cross-border activity, with the regulator then communicating with authorities in the markets where the firm intends to operate.

MEGE zweite GmbH said its planned regulated offering includes crypto-asset custody, exchange and trading services, alongside other services covered by its MiCA authorization. The company said it intends to serve both retail and institutional clients through the European entity.

The approval arrives as the EU moves crypto platforms toward a common licensing regime with rules covering governance, custody, disclosures, operational resilience and consumer protections. For platforms seeking a pan-European business, the practical value of MiCA lies in the ability to build compliance systems around one home-state supervisor while operating across multiple markets.

Passporting remains the next operational step

The FMA license does not by itself mean that services are immediately available in every EEA country named by BingX. MEGE zweite GmbH said it is continuing to coordinate with Austria’s regulator and other European authorities before supervised operations begin across its intended footprint.

Under MiCA, a licensed crypto-asset service provider must provide its home-state authority with information about the countries where it plans to operate and the services it expects to offer. The home regulator then passes that notification to relevant host-country authorities. This process, commonly called passporting, is designed to prevent a provider from having to obtain a separate CASP authorization in every market.

For users, the distinction matters because the availability of a platform’s products can vary by jurisdiction even after the provider receives a MiCA license. National rules outside MiCA’s direct scope, including consumer, tax, marketing and financial-crime requirements, can still shape how a service is presented and accessed in individual countries.

BingX EU said its authorization places its European activities under requirements tied to transparency, security and user protection. Those requirements form part of MiCA’s attempt to standardize a market that had previously been governed largely through national regimes, temporary registrations and differing interpretations of existing financial-services law.

A more defined route for Europe-facing platforms

MiCA’s rules for crypto-asset service providers became applicable across the EU in December 2024. The regulation created a licensing structure for businesses providing custody, trading-platform operation, exchange, order execution and related services involving crypto-assets.

The framework includes obligations that are especially relevant to centralized trading and custody platforms. Providers must safeguard client assets, establish complaint-handling procedures, manage conflicts of interest and meet governance requirements. Firms that hold customer crypto-assets on behalf of clients face specific rules around custody arrangements and the segregation of holdings.

The regulation also brought transition provisions for companies that had operated under national laws before MiCA took effect. Those arrangements were not uniform across Europe: member states could allow existing providers to continue for a limited period, but MiCA set July 1, 2026, as the latest possible end date for national transitional regimes.

That deadline has increased the value of full CASP authorization for companies seeking to continue operating throughout the bloc. It also makes the status of a platform’s legal entity more relevant than its brand name alone. A global exchange can have different entities, permissions and product menus in different regions, while an EEA-focused entity may be subject to MiCA supervision through its home regulator.

MEGE zweite GmbH identified itself as BingX’s regulated European entity and said it is headquartered in Vienna. The company’s announcement described the FMA authorization as the basis for its planned operations in 29 EEA countries.

The license separates European operations from the global brand

BingX said the broader group was founded in 2018 and has more than 40 million users globally. That global figure does not indicate the number of customers who will be served by the Austrian-regulated entity, nor does a MiCA authorization automatically extend to activities outside the EEA.

The company has also pursued high-profile commercial partnerships, naming Chelsea FC as a main partner since 2024 and Scuderia Ferrari HP as an official partner in 2026. Such agreements may raise brand visibility, but they are separate from the licensing status of the entity providing crypto services to European customers.

For prospective users, the relevant issue is whether the specific entity onboarded to provide the service is authorized for their jurisdiction and whether the product in question is included in that entity’s approved scope. MiCA authorization covers crypto-asset services, while other financial products can fall under separate European rules.

BingX EU’s FMA approval therefore gives the group a defined legal route into regulated EEA markets, subject to the completion of passporting notifications and the operational rollout of its Austrian entity. The next test will be how quickly MEGE zweite GmbH converts that authorization into country-by-country availability while meeting the ongoing supervisory standards attached to a MiCA license.
