Alphabet advances Project Suncatcher and Fervo EGS

2026-09-26 14:17

Alphabet’s push to secure computing capacity and electricity supply moved forward on Sept. 24 with a planned satellite test for its Project Suncatcher initiative and a major geothermal milestone from Fervo Energy, a power supplier backed by the technology group. The developments arrived as rising Treasury yields and a reported construction dispute involving Oracle underscored the financial and physical constraints facing the AI data-center buildout.

Alphabet said a first Project Suncatcher test satellite carrying its in-house Tensor Processing Unit, or TPU, chips is scheduled to launch early on Oct. 1 aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare mission. The spacecraft is intended to validate hardware in orbit and sits outside the project’s original development plan.

The satellite will carry four TPU chips, generate roughly 1 kilowatt of solar power and deliver computing capacity roughly comparable to one ground-based data-center server, according to Alphabet. Its expected operational life is about one year.

Project Suncatcher explores whether solar-powered computing infrastructure could eventually operate beyond Earth’s power grids. Alphabet has presented the first mission as an engineering test rather than a near-term source of commercial capacity, with cost parity between orbital and ground computing targeted for the mid-2030s.

Planet remains on track for 2027 prototypes

Planet is building and operating the spacecraft for the Suncatcher program. Two larger prototype satellites, planned for 2027, remain part of the initiative and are expected to test laser-based communications between spacecraft.

That networking element would be essential for any larger orbital-computing system. Individual satellites with limited power and processing capacity would need high-speed links to divide computing workloads and transmit results back to Earth. Alphabet’s early test, by contrast, is focused on verifying how TPU hardware performs in the radiation, thermal swings and power constraints of low-Earth orbit.

Planet shares rose 7.57% on Sept. 24 and continued to gain in after-hours trading, according to the supplied market data. The reaction reflected the company’s role in a potentially high-profile technology experiment, though the project remains years from a commercial-scale deployment.

The proposed timeline also illustrates the distance between the concept and present data-center demand. A single server-equivalent satellite cannot alleviate the immediate shortages of grid connections, transformers, turbines, land and financing that have slowed major AI infrastructure projects. Alphabet’s nearer-term power strategy is centered on terrestrial generation, including enhanced geothermal systems.

Fervo reaches first power at Utah geothermal project

Fervo Energy said on Sept. 24 that its Cape Station project in Beaver County, Utah, had reached “First Power,” making it the first utility-scale enhanced geothermal system, or EGS, to reach that milestone, according to the company.

Enhanced geothermal systems use drilling and reservoir-engineering techniques to access heat in underground rock where naturally occurring geothermal resources may be insufficient for conventional plants. Fervo has adapted horizontal drilling methods developed in the oil and gas industry to create and manage those underground systems.

Cape Station’s first development phase is planned to deliver 100 megawatts of capacity. Its initial 33 MW GeoBlock module is scheduled to begin commercial operations on Oct. 1. Fervo is also constructing a second 400 MW phase and has described longer-term development potential exceeding 4 gigawatts.

For large technology companies, geothermal power offers a different profile from intermittent renewable generation. A geothermal plant can produce steady electricity around the clock, which fits the constant load of data centers running AI training and cloud-computing workloads. Building such projects still requires extensive drilling, transmission planning and upfront capital, but it can provide a route to new generation in regions where conventional grid expansion is moving slowly.

Alphabet participated in Fervo’s $462 million Series E funding round and has been disclosed as a major purchaser of the company’s power. Earlier in September 2026, Alphabet signed a 396 MW power-purchase agreement with Fervo that was described as the largest EGS deal of its kind, along with an expansion option for roughly 600 MW. Together, those arrangements could bring Alphabet’s potential geothermal procurement close to 1 GW.

Rising rates pressure data-center financing

The announcements came during a volatile session for infrastructure-linked technology stocks. The 30-year U.S. Treasury yield touched its highest level since 2004 on Sept. 24, while the Nasdaq Composite edged up 0.01% to close at 26,939.373.

Higher long-term borrowing costs create a tougher backdrop for data-center projects, which typically require large upfront commitments to land, construction, power equipment and networking hardware before they generate revenue. Projects backed by substantial debt are particularly exposed when rates rise or construction timelines slip.

Oracle shares fell 3.47% after the company reportedly issued a force majeure notice to Stack Infrastructure related to Project Jupiter, a large New Mexico data-center effort linked to providing computing capacity for OpenAI. Reported accounts have described the development as relying on an off-balance-sheet special-purpose vehicle that combines debt financing with private equity.

Shares of other companies associated with the project also declined. Blue Owl Capital, identified in the supplied information as the parent of the project developer, fell 3.65%, while fuel-cell supplier Bloom Energy closed down 3.10%.

The Oracle dispute places the energy challenge beside the financial challenge. Companies can announce multibillion-dollar data-center commitments, but construction schedules depend on deliverable power, equipment and financing. Delays in any one area can affect the economics of the whole project.

Berkshire expands Alphabet exposure

Berkshire Hathaway increased its Alphabet holdings in the second quarter, according to its 13F filing. The filing showed Berkshire’s Class A Alphabet position, traded as GOOGL, rising 45% to 78.79 million shares, while its Class C GOOG holding increased 83%. Berkshire held a combined 106 million Alphabet shares.

The supplied information also states that Berkshire committed $10 billion as a cornerstone allocation in an $84.75 billion Alphabet AI financing, making Alphabet Berkshire’s third-largest holding by market value, ahead of Coca-Cola.

Taken together, Alphabet’s satellite experiment and geothermal procurement show two very different responses to the same constraint: AI computing requires dependable energy as much as advanced chips. Cape Station addresses the nearer-term need for firm electricity, while Project Suncatcher tests a far more speculative path that would move part of the computing stack beyond terrestrial grids.
