AI valuation gap persists between the US and Hong Kong

2026-10-23 06:58

AIMacro

Hong Kong-listed technology companies enter the next earnings season facing a demanding test: they must show that rising AI spending can translate into cloud growth, advertising gains and new revenue streams quickly enough to justify valuations that remain well below those of major U.S. AI beneficiaries.

Tencent, Alibaba and Kuaishou trade at markedly lower earnings multiples than Nvidia and Meta despite their expanding AI products and cloud operations. Tencent was referenced at roughly 14 times 2027 forward earnings, compared with about 20 times forward earnings for Meta and 33 times trailing earnings for Nvidia. The discount reflects more than regional sentiment. It also tracks a profit structure in which U.S. chip suppliers and hyperscale cloud operators capture a larger share of AI’s current economics.

Nvidia’s latest results illustrate the difference. The company reported FY27 first-quarter revenue of $81.615 billion and net profit of $58.321 billion, producing a net margin of roughly 71.5%. Its Oct. 19 market capitalization stood near $5.23 trillion, based on a closing share price of $217.09.

By comparison, Tencent’s 2026 second-quarter disclosure implied a net margin of about 28.9%, while Alibaba’s fiscal-year figures implied a margin near 10.2%. Kuaishou’s second-quarter results implied an 8.9% net margin. The gap does not mean Hong Kong platforms have been excluded from the AI buildout. It places them further down the value chain, where companies must fund computing capacity, develop models and persuade customers or users to pay for AI-enabled services.

Cloud spending is reshaping the profit equation

The scale of U.S. cloud spending has become a central reference point for both U.S. and Asian technology valuations. Microsoft’s quarterly capital expenditure rose from $14.9 billion in FY25’s first quarter to $35.8 billion in FY26’s fourth quarter, more than doubling over eight quarters.

That increase supports demand for Nvidia’s data-center processors and related infrastructure, helping explain why hardware suppliers can report unusually high margins during the current AI investment cycle. It also sets a high bar for platform companies that are building cloud capacity while seeking to monetize AI through enterprise services, advertising tools, e-commerce recommendations and consumer applications.

For Alibaba and Tencent, cloud revenue growth will be closely watched alongside capital expenditure and depreciation. Building AI infrastructure can strengthen long-term product capabilities, but rapid investment can weigh on near-term margins if revenue does not rise at a similar pace. The next reports will offer a clearer indication of whether AI workloads are producing enough commercial demand to offset those costs.

The issue also reaches Hong Kong-listed semiconductor companies. SMIC and Hua Hong Semiconductor are commonly assessed through utilization rates, order trends and mature-node demand rather than the frontier AI chip economics that have powered Nvidia. Their exposure to the cycle depends more heavily on whether expanding data-center investment spreads through networking, power, memory, industrial equipment and China’s broader domestic technology supply chain.

Different routes to AI revenue

Hong Kong’s AI-linked companies broadly fall into three groups: compute hardware suppliers, cloud and model providers, and platforms attempting to turn AI features into directly measurable consumer or enterprise revenue.

Alibaba and Tencent sit primarily in the cloud-and-platform category. Their results will be judged on whether AI services lift cloud revenue and whether AI improves the economics of existing businesses, including advertising, merchant services, gaming and enterprise software. The most useful disclosures may be operational rather than promotional: customer adoption, revenue growth in AI-related cloud products, and evidence that automation is improving conversion or reducing operating costs.

Kuaishou offers a more visible test of application-led monetization through Kling, its AI video-generation product. The company said Kling generated 850 million yuan in second-quarter revenue and had annual recurring revenue approaching $500 million. Based on Kuaishou’s reported quarterly revenue, Kling accounted for about 2.4% of the total.

That remains a small share of Kuaishou’s overall business, but it gives the market a concrete benchmark for the next quarter. A rising revenue contribution or ARR figure would show that AI creation tools are developing into a meaningful product line rather than remaining an engagement feature or a costly experiment.

Treasury yields and Southbound flows shape the trading backdrop

Valuation comparisons are also being influenced by the cost of capital. U.S. 10-year Treasury yields reached 5.36% in early October and traded near 5.1% in mid-month, creating pressure on growth-stock multiples. Higher government bond yields raise the return available from lower-risk assets and can reduce the present value placed on profits expected years in the future.

Hong Kong technology shares weakened in a late-October trading session. On Oct. 20, Alibaba fell 3.13%, Tencent lost 1.42%, and Kuaishou declined 2.25%. Intraday prices were cited at HK$105.40 for Alibaba, HK$412 for Tencent and HK$28.64 for Kuaishou.

Southbound trading through the Stock Connect program has provided a more nuanced picture. Cumulative net buying reached about HK$134 billion from July through Oct. 8, indicating sustained mainland demand for Hong Kong equities. Yet the Oct. 12-16 week recorded net selling of HK$6.637 billion, including HK$5.080 billion of net selling on Oct. 15.

The weekly data showed net buying of HK$14.93 billion in AIA, HK$14.34 billion in Tencent and HK$7.34 billion in Alibaba. SMIC saw net selling of HK$30.24 billion, while Yangtze Optical Fibre and Cable recorded HK$24.51 billion of net selling and Xiaomi HK$7.56 billion. The pattern suggests buyers were selective rather than uniformly rotating into AI-related names, favoring some large platforms while reducing exposure to chip and hardware-linked stocks.

Earnings disclosures will test the valuation case

The upcoming reports are likely to focus attention on four measures: Alibaba Cloud and Tencent Cloud revenue growth; the pace of capital expenditure relative to revenue at Microsoft and Meta; AI adoption within advertising and e-commerce systems; and Kling’s ARR and revenue share against its 2.4% quarterly starting point.

Those figures will help determine whether Hong Kong’s AI discount reflects temporary skepticism or a more durable difference in profit capture. Nvidia’s results show the financial rewards available to companies selling scarce computing infrastructure. Hong Kong platforms now need to demonstrate that their cloud investments and AI products can produce a similarly visible, if less spectacular, improvement in revenue growth and margins.
