AI chip stocks sell off on rates

2026-10-14 03:27

A selloff in AI-linked semiconductor shares swept from Asia into the United States on Oct. 13, exposing growing unease over whether the debt-funded buildout of data centers and memory capacity can produce returns quickly enough to support elevated valuations.

South Korea’s KOSPI fell 5.5% at the close after declining more than 6% during the session. Samsung Electronics lost more than 7%, while SK Hynix dropped more than 10%. In Japan, Kioxia shares fell more than 13%, following an intraday decline of over 10%.

The pressure reached U.S. trading hours, where the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index, or SOX, fell more than 3% intraday before recovering most of the loss to close down about 0.2%. Micron Technology ended down roughly 3.6%, Western Digital lost about 1.6%, Seagate Technology slipped 0.8%, and Sandisk fell 0.3%. Each had suffered much steeper declines earlier in the day.

The move extended a difficult stretch for chip shares. The SOX had fallen about 2.7% in the preceding session and was heading for a fifth straight daily decline, its longest losing streak in roughly 17 months.

Debt costs confront the AI spending cycle

The retreat did not stem from a single earnings report or a sudden collapse in demand for AI hardware. It reflected a more fundamental repricing of risk after nearly four years of spending on data centers, advanced memory and computing infrastructure.

Markets have become more sensitive to the cost of financing those projects. Higher interest rates and sharper swings in bond markets increase the hurdle for companies funding massive server deployments with debt, while traders are demanding clearer evidence that capital expenditures will translate into durable cash flow and earnings.

Recent financing activity has put that pressure into view. Tencent issued U.S. dollar and offshore yuan bonds in Hong Kong, with initial price talk for a 10-year dollar tranche implying a yield around 1.15 percentage points above comparable U.S. Treasury bonds. SoftBank sold $4.5 billion in high-yield bonds the previous month through a 7.5-year deal carrying a top coupon of 9.75%.

High coupons do not by themselves signal financial distress. They do show how expensive large-scale technology bets can become when borrowers depend on credit markets rather than internally generated cash. That calculation has become central for companies attempting to expand AI computing capacity rapidly.

A separate development added to concerns around the data-center business model. Firmus, an Nvidia-backed data-center operator, paused a planned A$5 billion initial public offering in Australia. The decision arrived as public-market appetite for large infrastructure valuations appeared less certain, particularly where future returns depend on continued demand for costly AI capacity.

Memory stocks face a new competitive question

Memory manufacturers were among the weakest shares during the selloff, with China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies, or CXMT, adding another issue for traders to assess.

CXMT said it had made progress on a 4F² DRAM architecture and expects a next-generation DDR5 RDIMM server-memory product combining related technologies by the end of the year. The company presented the work at a conference held on Oct. 9 and 10.

DRAM cell designs are commonly measured by the area they occupy. Mainstream DRAM architectures generally use layouts around 6F², while CXMT’s proposed 4F² structure would reduce the cell footprint. The company said its self-developed vertically surrounded gate, or VSG, transistor design is intended to improve gate control, reduce electrical leakage and increase memory density.

CXMT’s disclosure does not establish a timetable for high-volume manufacturing or commercial competitiveness against established memory suppliers. Yet the announcement sharpened attention on a market where technological leadership can shift margins quickly, especially as AI servers consume large volumes of high-bandwidth and enterprise-grade memory.

The prospect of a denser architecture placed additional pressure on companies such as Samsung and SK Hynix, which have benefited from strong demand for AI-related memory. It also arrived during a session when U.S.-listed storage and memory names were already falling sharply: Micron was down more than 6% at its low, Seagate nearly 8%, Western Digital more than 7%, SK Hynix’s U.S.-listed shares more than 6%, and Sandisk close to 6%.

Large gains left little room for disappointment

The intensity of the selling followed a period of exceptional gains. As of the previous Monday’s close, the SOX remained up about 72.8% for the year, while Micron had risen more than 240%.

Those advances reflected expectations that AI data centers would require far more advanced chips, storage and memory than earlier generations of cloud infrastructure. The same expectations now leave semiconductor shares highly responsive to any sign that financing costs, competitive threats or slower cash returns could temper the spending cycle.

The divergence between chip manufacturers and parts of the software sector also became clearer. Meta Platforms rose about 3.4% after releasing a new AI model, moving against the decline in hardware-linked shares. The market response suggested that traders were distinguishing between product announcements and the balance-sheet demands of supplying the computing infrastructure behind them.

Risk appetite turns more selective

BlackRock’s research team lowered its view on U.S. equities to neutral and said it preferred short-term U.S. Treasuries. The preference reflects an environment in which higher yields on government debt offer competition for riskier assets, particularly those whose valuations depend heavily on profits expected years ahead.

The International Monetary Fund has also warned that an AI-market adjustment could have global effects. The IMF said AI may support growth, while uncertainty remains over whether investment returns will meet the high expectations embedded in markets.

That backdrop has implications beyond semiconductor equities. Digital assets have often traded alongside higher-risk technology shares during periods of tightening financial conditions, although the relationship can vary widely across assets and market cycles. Rising Treasury yields can reduce appetite for assets that do not generate income, while volatility in equities and credit may increase demand for liquidity.

The Oct. 13 selloff therefore represented more than a one-day reaction to a new memory-chip design or a delayed IPO. It showed markets applying a tougher test to the AI infrastructure boom: whether companies can finance enormous computing investments, defend their technological position and turn demand into earnings before the cost of capital erodes the returns.
