How to set a scaled order in futures trading

2026-10-15 09:19

Scaled orders allow you to place multiple limit orders at different price levels within a specified range. Available for futures trading, this feature helps you open or close positions in stages without placing each order manually.

This guide explains how scaled orders work, how to configure them on Toobit, and how to manage your orders after submission.

What is a scaled order?

A scaled order splits a total order quantity into multiple independent limit orders within a price range you specify. You can customize the price range, number of sub-orders, and how prices and quantities are distributed.

For example, when placing a scaled buy order, lower-priced sub-orders may fill as the market price falls. For a scaled sell order, higher-priced sub-orders may fill as the market price rises.

Scaled orders give you greater control over how you distribute orders when opening or closing futures positions. However, each sub-order is executed independently, and actual fills depend on market conditions, available liquidity, and order matching.

What are the benefits of scaled orders?

  • Place orders at multiple price levels: Split a large order into smaller limit orders to build or reduce a position in stages.

  • Customize order distribution: Adjust how your total order quantity is allocated across different price levels.

  • Save time on order placement: Create multiple limit orders in a single setup instead of entering each one manually.

  • Spread execution across prices: Distribute orders across a price range rather than concentrating the entire quantity at one price.

Note: Scaled orders do not guarantee execution at every price level or a better average execution price.

Understanding scaled order parameters

Before placing a scaled order, familiarize yourself with the following settings.

1. Minimum price: The lowest price in your selected range.

2. Maximum price: The highest price in your selected range.

3. Order count: The number of sub-orders to create.

4. Quantity: The total quantity of your scaled order.

5. Order price: Determines how limit prices are distributed across sub-orders.

  • Flat: Sub-orders are placed at equal price intervals.

  • Increasing: More sub-orders are concentrated toward the higher end of the price range.

  • Decreasing: More sub-orders are concentrated toward the lower end of the price range.

6. Order quantity: Determines how the total quantity is allocated among sub-orders.

  • Evenly split: Each sub-order receives the same quantity.

  • Increasing: Sub-order quantities increase along the selected price order.

  • Decreasing: Sub-order quantities decrease along the selected price order.

How to place a scaled order on Toobit

Step 1: Select scaled order

Go to the futures trading page and select Scaled order from the order type menu.

Step 2: Enter the price range and quantity

Enter the minimum price, maximum price, and total quantity for your scaled order.

These settings define the price range and total size of your order.

Step 3: Configure your sub-orders

Click Add scaled orders, then:

1. Set the order count to specify how many sub-orders to create.

2. Select your preferred order price distribution method.

3. Select your preferred order quantity distribution method.

Step 4: Review and submit your order

Review your settings and click OK.

Then select Buy long or Sell short to submit your scaled order.

Step 5: View or cancel your orders

After submission, go to Open orders to view sub-orders that have not been fully filled. You can also cancel their unfilled portions.

Some sub-orders may fill immediately upon submission. To review your activity:

  • Order history: View your submitted order records.

  • Trade history: View execution details for filled orders.

Scaled order example

Let's look at an example using the ETHUSDT perpetual futures contract.

Suppose ETHUSDT is trading at 2,700 USDT, and you want to open a long position in stages between 2,400 and 2,600 USDT, with a total order quantity of 10 ETH.

You configure the following settings:

  • Minimum price: 2,400 USDT

  • Maximum price: 2,600 USDT

  • Order count: 5

  • Total order quantity: 10 ETH

  • Order price distribution: Flat

  • Order quantity distribution: Evenly split

How the orders are distributed:

1. With flat price distribution, the five sub-orders are placed at equal price intervals: (2,600 − 2,400) ÷ (5 − 1) = 50 USDT.

2. With evenly split quantity distribution, each sub-order contains: 10 ETH ÷ 5 = 2 ETH.

3. The system creates five limit buy orders at 2,400, 2,450, 2,500, 2,550, and 2,600 USDT, each for 2 ETH.

4. Once submitted, each sub-order is matched independently based on market conditions. You can view or cancel unfilled orders under Open orders.

5. If all five sub-orders are fully filled at their respective limit prices, you will have purchased 10 ETH at an average execution price of 2,500 USDT, excluding trading fees.

Note: This example is for illustrative purposes only. Reaching a limit price does not guarantee execution, as actual fills depend on market liquidity and order matching.

FAQs

1. What are scaled orders used for?

Scaled orders allow you to distribute a total order quantity across multiple price levels. They can help you build or reduce futures positions in stages without placing each limit order manually.

2. When should I use a scaled order?

You may consider a scaled order when you want to buy or sell within a specific price range, distribute your order quantity across different prices, or manage staged entries and exits.

3. How do scaled orders work?

Toobit divides your total order quantity into multiple limit orders based on your selected price and quantity distribution settings.

Each sub-order is matched independently when market conditions and order matching requirements are met.

4. How many sub-orders can I create?

You can create 2–50 sub-orders within a single scaled order, subject to the order placement requirements displayed on the trading page.

5. Can I modify or cancel a scaled order?

Modification options depend on the functions available on the trading page.

You can cancel unfilled sub-orders or the remaining unfilled portions under Open orders. Any portion that has already been filled cannot be canceled.
