Vitalik Buterin releases open source sci fi novel

2026-09-28 08:53

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has published “Snowmoon,” an open-source science fiction novel that turns questions of cryptography, privacy and decentralized governance into the foundation of a fictional political conflict. The 32-chapter work follows Buterin’s indication in May that he planned to move away from regular blog writing and experiment with fiction focused on decentralized systems.

Buterin shared the release through his Farcaster account, linking readers to the project. The novel, also presented under the Chinese title “Snowmoon/雪月,” is distributed under the GNU General Public License version 3, or GPL v3. That license allows readers to study, modify and redistribute the work under the same terms, placing the book closer to an open-source software project than a conventional commercial publication.

The release gives Buterin a new format for exploring ideas that have long appeared in his technical essays and public discussions. Rather than presenting institutional design as a set of proposals or research questions, “Snowmoon” places those concepts inside a future society shaped by cryptography and competing views of digital sovereignty.

A conflict over control of digital systems

The story centers on Veridia and the Arctic Empire, two social systems locked in an ideological confrontation over how digital life should be governed. The premise draws attention to a recurring tension in cryptocurrency: whether users and communities should control their own digital infrastructure, identities and assets, or whether those functions should sit under more centralized political and institutional authority.

Cryptography is not simply part of the setting. According to the release description, it is embedded in the way the fictional society operates, alongside decentralized governance mechanisms. That approach gives the novel a practical rather than decorative relationship with the technology. The political stakes in the story depend on rules, incentives and coordination systems familiar to readers who follow Ethereum governance, privacy tools and protocol design.

The work also incorporates mechanisms drawn from academic papers. The announcement does not specify which papers or systems are used in the narrative, but the inclusion suggests that the book is intended to test governance ideas through characters and institutions rather than through a traditional technical argument.

That choice could make abstract disputes more accessible without reducing them to a simple technology-utopia narrative. Governance systems are rarely judged only by their mathematical design; they also depend on how people respond to incentives, whether minorities retain meaningful protections, and how communities handle conflict when rules produce results that participants consider unfair. Fiction can explore those pressures in ways that specifications and forum posts generally cannot.

Open-source licensing extends the experiment

Publishing a novel under GPL v3 gives “Snowmoon” an unusual distribution model for a literary work. GPL v3 is widely associated with software because its “copyleft” provisions require redistributed modified versions to retain the same freedoms. Applied to a novel, the license would allow translations, adaptations and derivative editions, provided those works follow the license’s requirements.

The model could encourage communities to improve translations, annotate references or develop adaptations around the setting. It also means Buterin is not treating the text as a closed intellectual property asset whose reuse depends on individual permissions.

A complete Chinese translation has been shared through a Baidu cloud link. The supplied description says the Chinese version exceeds 170,000 words, indicating that the translation is a substantial standalone edition rather than a brief excerpt or fan summary.

Open licensing is particularly aligned with a story about digital sovereignty. Readers are given the ability to examine and reuse the text’s contents under a defined legal framework, extending the book’s argument about participatory systems into the terms under which the work itself circulates.

AI disclosure appears in the work

“Snowmoon” also includes an AI-use statement within the text. The release describes the book as entirely written manually, with artificial intelligence used only for polishing and proofreading.

That disclosure arrives amid a wider dispute over authorship, training data and the boundaries between human-written and AI-assisted work. In this case, the stated distinction is narrow: AI was used as an editorial aid rather than as a system generating the underlying plot, prose or ideas.

Including the statement in the work itself makes the disclosure part of the publication rather than an informal note attached to a social-media announcement. Readers can assess the claim alongside the text, while translators and derivative creators have a clear account of the author’s stated process.

Fiction replaces the regular blog format

Buterin has been one of the cryptocurrency sector’s most widely read technical writers, with posts often addressing Ethereum’s architecture, privacy, scaling and social coordination. His move toward fiction does not necessarily signal a departure from those subjects. “Snowmoon” instead repackages them in a form that can examine institutional failure, ideology and individual choices over a longer narrative arc.

The novel’s release also avoids treating decentralized governance as a solved engineering problem. By framing digital sovereignty as a conflict between rival societies, it places the emphasis on trade-offs: who writes rules, who can contest them, and how technical systems shape political power.

For readers accustomed to viewing protocol governance through proposals, votes and code repositories, “Snowmoon” offers a different kind of open-source document—one that asks how those systems might feel when they become the structure of everyday life.
