Verifact Markets launches true false evidence trading platform

2026-10-06 20:17

Verifact Markets has launched a trading platform that asks users to take financial positions on disputed factual claims rather than forecasts, using “True” and “False” contracts that the company says will be settled through an evidence-based review process.

The Chicago-based company is seeking to apply the familiar mechanics of prediction markets to controversies over past events, public statements and alleged misconduct. A contract pays $1 if its outcome is judged correct and $0 if it is judged incorrect, according to Verifact. Unlike a conventional event market, where a future election result or economic release determines the payout, Verifact says it will weigh available evidence to decide which side of a historical or contested claim is better supported.

Aquino, Verifact’s CEO, said the platform is intended for “topics of public interest where people genuinely disagree about what is true.” The approach places the platform in a sensitive area between market trading, public debate and editorial-style judgments, with the company itself responsible for creating the process that turns contested evidence into a settlement outcome.

Evidence review sits at the center of settlement

Verifact said its patent-pending framework combines evidence evaluation at scale with market structure in resolving each contract. The company said evidence may come from its own systems and from submissions made by users, and that it considers the full body of information before determining an outcome.

The platform says it will resolve markets only when it reaches a “high level of confidence.” That threshold is central to the model: a contract concerning a clear public record could potentially be settled more easily than one involving disputed accounts, incomplete reporting or claims where relevant evidence is unavailable.

The company has not positioned trading prices as the sole indicator of truth. On prediction markets, a contract’s price generally reflects the market’s implied probability of an event occurring. Verifact’s contracts instead ask traders to assign a value to a claim while the eventual payout depends on an evidence review, meaning the market price and the platform’s final conclusion could diverge.

That structure gives traders a reason to study source material and competing arguments, but it also makes the settlement process the platform’s defining feature. A $1-or-zero payout creates a sharp financial distinction between a claim deemed true and one deemed false, even where public debates can involve degrees of certainty rather than a simple binary answer.

Inconclusive markets may be settled at an expiration price

Verifact said it has a separate mechanism for markets where the evidence does not support a conclusive result. If trading activity declines and no new evidence emerges over a period of time, the company may expire the contract rather than issue a True or False resolution.

In that case, positions would be settled using an expiration price derived from recent qualifying trades, according to the company. The policy would give users a payout even when Verifact cannot reach its required confidence level, although it shifts the result from an evidence-based binary decision to a market-based calculation.

The distinction could be especially relevant for allegations that are difficult to prove or disprove conclusively. A market may attract intense trading based on news reports, legal filings or online discussion without producing evidence strong enough for a definitive settlement. Under Verifact’s described model, an expiration process would prevent such a market from remaining open indefinitely.

The company’s examples show the types of disputes it intends to host. Proposed markets include whether COVID-19 originated in a laboratory at the Wuhan Institute of Virology; whether Meta overstated WhatsApp’s privacy in its “Not Even WhatsApp” advertising campaign; and whether the Pentagon fired Stars and Stripes journalists because of reporting involving the USS Abraham Lincoln.

Verifact also said that, during a private beta, a market on whether the Los Angeles Clippers used Kawhi Leonard’s endorsement deals to circumvent the NBA salary cap was resolved True. The company did not provide further detail in its announcement on the evidence used or the timing of that resolution.

A model built for disputes rather than forecasts

Prediction markets typically concentrate on events with an identifiable deadline and an observable outcome, such as an election winner, a central-bank decision or a sports result. Verifact is targeting claims where the relevant facts may already exist but remain disputed, obscured or interpreted differently by competing groups.

That choice could expand the range of questions that contract markets can address, while creating a more demanding burden around how claims are worded, which evidence qualifies and when a conclusion is sufficiently supported. A poorly defined question can turn a factual dispute into an argument over terminology. A narrowly framed question may be more resolvable but can omit context that changes how readers understand the underlying issue.

Verifact said its staff has experience in financial markets and technology, including intelligence systems designed to process large quantities of information. The company is backed by Positron Capital Management, which Verifact described as a multibillion-dollar family office with investments including prediction markets.

The service is currently available to eligible users in several jurisdictions outside the United States, Verifact said. The company added that it is pursuing a regulatory path for a U.S. launch.

For users, the platform’s appeal will depend less on the novelty of True-and-False contracts than on whether its evidence standards, market wording and expiration rules produce outcomes that participants consider consistent and credible. Verifact’s model turns unresolved public claims into tradable instruments, but its long-term test will be whether the process behind each settlement can withstand the same scrutiny applied to the claims being traded.
